The main difference between both those formats is compatability. Some older DVD-RW drives may be plus or dash only.Majority of the newer drives are dual format.

Mostly the compatability comes down to your stand alone dvd players/ps2/xbox consoles/and other pc dvd drives. Some of them may prefer the plus/dash/both/or none. You want to find the format that they like.If they don't like a certain format from your DVD-RW drive, then you'll get a no disc/empty disc/dirty disc type of error. Then try the opposite format and see how those stand alones react to them.

Another big thing about the plus format,is in certain DVD-RW drives,It can be booktyped to dvd-rom making them more compatable in stand alone players. This booktyping fools dvd drives into recognizing them so you can play them. The dash format can't be booktyped.

The media quality can vary between both formats. Take TDK media. Pretty decent manufacturers on their dash format, but on the same speed/same quantity spindles of their plus format are more likely to be cmags. Cmags are a lower quality manufacture. They can be found in a ton of media like memorex/teon/TDK plus/and many store brand name and generic brands. Be cautious on cmags, they will give stand alone players a harder time. That's why members need to use the high quality stuff like taiyo yuden and verbatim data like plus.

What is the brand name and model # of your dvd writer?

It's a Pioneer but I don't remember the model #. Thanks for your response. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about burning, backing up my movies, etc. Also, what is the best software?

ALL pioneer drives DO NOT allow booktype/bitsetting using OFFICIAL firmware, but modified ones will make it happen~ :)

Recommended Media:

Pioneer burners usually favor the dash format. Pioneer can't booktype unless you download the hacked buffalo firmware. That is a risk.Maybe later, down the road you may need that.

Start with some good quality rws first. You will mess up at first,so these can be erased until you get the process down.Stand alones do have a little harder time reading rw media.

Get quality media: Maxell 8x are very good and easy to get. Sony 8x,and japanese fuji 8x. Look on labels for country of origin for the japanese spindles. You may want a small batch from both formats, backup a few discs and test out in all your pc drives and stand alone players.Find the format that performs best off that pioneer and stick with it. Later you can get the good taiyo yuden media for the best media.

Best software? Everyone has their own opinion like clonedvd/oneclick/nero recode2.

I am very satisfied with the free and low priced programs like:

Ripping: Running anydvd in the background and using dvd shrink to rip/encode/and auto burn with nero 6. Very nice setup on a dual drive pc. Since dvd shrink hasn't been updated for a while, that background ripper called anydvd by slysoft usually pulls off those newer encryptions.

Ripping: Dvd decrypter/ compress with dvd shrink/and auto burn with nero or dvd decrypter. This is a more powerful ripper. If movie has to be compressed, Use file mode. If no compression needed, use Mode ISO read to hard drive/Mode ISo write-locate mds file and burn. This is my setup on my spare, single drive pc.Dvd decrypter cannot compress.

For backing up dual layers,Definitely dvd decrypter using ISO read and write.Excellent 1 program setup for dl backups.

Burning: Nero6 or dvd decrypter. Dvd shrink does not have a burn engine. It can use both nero and dvd decrypter to burn.

Dvd decrypter and dvd shrink are free, but no longer updated. Anydvd by slysoft runs about $40,but well worth it for ripping dvds and cds.It runs in the background,so no extra step is involved.Nero oem works very well for me.

Dvd shrink also has some very good quality enhancement features for those dvd-9 movies to fit on single 4.7 gb blank disc.

Here's some great guides for these programs.

Edit: Booktyping is the ability to alter the plus format media and turning it into dvd-rom: The more universal format. Stand alone players can be picky as to what format/what speed/what brand of media/and even different burners. By booktyping, you bypass both plus and dash format so you fool those standalones should be able to read your backups better.

Thanks Saugmon, I'm learning and I appreciate any info I can get. I have DVDXCopy. It doesn't have a ripper so I had to download one. I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I'm thinking of getting something else that you suggested. I know about DVDXCopy being obsolete.

@Saugmon (love the dancin frog)

Would you suggest that booktyping should be done as a general rule for ones backups?

As a newbie, I am trying to understand this process and appreciate the time that you are taking with individuals like me.

thanks

Booktyping is the altering of the plus format and turning it into dvd-rom format.

Not all burners can booktype. Plextor/lite-on/Ben-q/LG are some of the burners that have this bitsetting capability too booktype.

NEC and Pioneer have no bitsetting capability with their regular firmware, but hacked firmware allows them to booktype.

Only the plus format can be booktyped. The dash format cannot be booktyped.

Why booktype?

It's mainly stand alone player/game consoles/and pc drive compatability. These players are where the majority of backups are going to be played in. Some of these will have trouble recognizing the plus/dash/both/or no trouble with either format. They'll give some sort of dirty disc/no disc error and won't even recognize a backup when they have trouble with a certain format. By booktyping the plus media to dvd-rom,those picky stand alones have a greater chance at playing your backups. Say you want to pass a backup around to your friends and family, but they can't play them,By booktyping-They will have a far greater chance to watch them without purchasing a new stand alone player.

9mmruger1: If you have the quality burner with the bitsetting capability to booktype, then it should be used.Especially if you want to take those backups around with you and play them on many different stand alones.
Some burners automatically booktype with normal dvd programs like Nero and DVD Decrypter, others like lite-on need an extra utility to booktype. I've used many different burners and some of them even with the booktyping capability was still pcs of crap! That's why a quality burner is a must,or my case,2 quality burners!

Just adding to what saugmon said. The only pioneer drives capable of being flashed with the buffalo f/w to enable them to bitset/booktype are the DRU-109 and DRU-110 (I'm not 100% sure about the 110 but read somewhere it could). Here's a good read about booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150

Check this out... From the newbie link in my sig :-)

<12>What is Booktype /BitSetting?
Physically there is a difference between a DVD-R disc and a DVD+R disc that is made during the production process. During the production of a DVD-R disc the lead-in is pre-embossed (pre-written). This overwrites parts of the DVD that contains information about the disc. E.g. the CSS key (part of the copy protection) is in this part on commercial movie discs (This is why you can?t make a 1:1 copy of a DVD). But in this space there is also room reserved for the so called ?booktype? field.

Changing the booktype field

This booktype field identifies the disc as either a DVD-ROM, DVD+R(W) or a DVD-R(W) disc and is for a big part responsible for the compatibility. Because this setting is overwritten during the DVD-R production process it can?t be modified afterwards, the laser of your DVD recorder simply can?t write to that part of the disc. During the production of DVD+R discs the space is untouched. Still CSS keys can?t be written to DVD+R discs because every DVD recorder and DVD player has a limit in its firmware to write or read to this space. However, there is no limit for writing the booktype field. Therefor a DVD+R(W) recorder will be able to modify this field by sending a command to the DVD recorder and fool the DVD player.

When the booktype field (bitsetting) is changed to DVD-ROM then DVD players are fooled and will think the user has put in a DVD-ROM disc instead of a DVD+R disc and will read it accordingly. This results in an increased chance that the player is able to read the disc and that?s why the ability to change the booktype field (bitsetting) is essential to a lot of users. Certainly owners of a DVD player that requires this field to be set to DVD-ROM, in order to work properly, will prefer a DVD recorder that supports setting the booktype field.

You booktype it to DVD- ???

What you are actually doing is just tricking your player into thinking you DVD is now a ROM. In other words you player now thinks your DVD is an original store bought DVD like the studios produce.
