Before DVD shrink completes the encoding process my computer shuts down. What's the deal with that?

Welcome to the forum. What you have just described is the OS shutting the system down before harm is done due to heat buildup. If this is a laptop the get a cool-pad. If it is a tower then you need more fans.
Also you might need to check the fans on the inside to make sure they are working properly . Check CPU Fan, Tower fan, video card fan and power supply fan. All should be working so you can dissipate the heat.

If not heat then you have a registry and program conflict which is a little harder to find.
