You will need hdadvance or hdloader so that the Ps2 can boot the hdd, you need a swapping method such as a slide card/fliptop if you plan to install backups other than that you just use the Ps2 to install original games onto the hdd, you can also install games on to the Ps2 using a application called WinHIP but you have to connect the Ps2 hdd to the PC in order to use it, you also need the image of the game you want to install on the Ps2 hdd on your PC, you can download hdloader but you need a method of booting it such as a modchip or swap magic.

Swap magic is one dvd disk & one cd disk, they allow you to play backups by when using a fliptop or a slide tool, you can however do other things with them like install a hdloader onto you memory card then you can load the hdd using a Ps1 game (this method is called an exploit and only works with the older Ps2's and not the slim one) and i hear swap magic 3.6 can boot the hdd , WinHIP only allows you to install games on to the Ps2 hdd you still need a method of booting it, you connect the hdd to the Ps2 either as a USB drive if that's the type of hdd it is or if its a normal IDE hdd you plug it into a IDE cable which means you have to open the PC and find the cable

If you are using a USB hdd then you will need USB Extreme i also think SM 3.6 can load the hdd but am not sure, when you say a modded system what do you mean, modchip?

USB Extreme is used to boot USB hard drives, you might be able to download a free version then all you have to do is burn it to a CD then use that CD to boot the hard drives. Take a look over at www.ps2source.net they may have one you can download.

You burn the downloaded image file to a CD then boot it when the USB hdd is connected, you will need at least a DVD-ROM for to copy DVD. You can install games onto the Ps2 hdd once you load up USB Extreme.

lets say i have backups that wont load directly with swapmagic..mostly due to the fact that some are PAL and some are DVD9 and some are just bad burns..so the question is:

would the hdloader have a better cure or have better compatibilty than the swap..some backups also take forever to load..can it load them faster

and could i decrypt bad burns again and burn them properly, then would the swapmagic read it..(sorry if i sound stupid, its my first post at afterdawn, any help would be much appreciated..afterdawn is no doubt "the best damn site ever")

Using HDLoader and a hard drive attached (through the network adaptor on a fat PS2) games load faster. Compatibility is probably worse, but I havn't experienced any games that don't work with HDLoader, except for Eyetoy Antigrav. BTW I'm talking about the HDLoader ELF, it's v0.7 something, easy to find on the internet.

On a non-modded system to use a downloaded HDLoader ELF, you would need to use the "independence exploit" (may have spelled that wrong) with an original (non-backup) PSX game and with a special save on your memory card. Search for a tutorial on Google if you want to see exactly how.

Or you could buy a pressed version of HDLoader and just use that to play games from the hard drive.

well from a computer stand point there is no way to recover a misburned CD/DVD. it's like making a copy of a bad copy you can't ever fix it. just restart with the image (.ISO) you have on your computer.

my question is this i think i'm just going to buy USB Extreme it's only 35 bucks. if i buy a real copy is there anything else i need to play my PS2 games from a usb hard drive???? i have both a moded ps2 (flip top) and a unmoded ps2 old school.

2nd when it says you need to format the usb drive. dose that just mean it has to be formated (FAT32/NTFS) or is it a diffrent format? after it's formated can i put other stuff on it or only use it for a PS2?

redmarine do you have a way booting a burnt CD/DVD?? If ya do then download USB Extreme as 35 seems rather costly for a disk, you will have pretty much everything you need after that since you already have a fliptop :)

The Ps2 hdd does not use FAT32 or NTFS it uses it's own file system, not actually sure what the file system is but i think its Linux related, you can partition the hdd so that you can put games on one half and you "should" be able to use the other half for say mp3s BUT USB Extreme i don't think lets you partition so you will have to get something like WinHIP or some other application to partition the hdd.
