hey guys i bought my ps2 2 years ago last summer and after about a year having it some of my backed up games wouldnt work. the cds werent scratched or anything so i figured its a ps2 problem. now currently none of my backed up ps2 discs work but real versions of ps2 and ps1 games along with backed up ps1 discs work fine. its really weird because once in a while itll read a ps2 game properly then it wont the next 100 times you try it. on my ps2 theres a sort of process with loading games involving the reset button and open buttons if its any significance

Sounds like your laser needs cleaned!

explain how you load back ups
are you using Swap Magic and a slip top
or a modchip...or what.

I started to have the same problem using a flip top and swap 3.6, it won't always load the swap magic screen up, it will go to either invalid PS2 disk or select disk/mem card screen.

If I then loaded a genuine game it works fine, take that out and then reload swap 3.6 again, and all will work again and I can load backup disk.

This is either a version 12 or 13 slim, I will check later. I have now bought a Matrix homebrew and neo-fix iii, but may get the unit swapped for a new one before I start soldering.

I was presuming that my laser was damaged, as my 5 year old son has a tendency to take disks out without turning it off, thus leaving the laser still on with nothing loaded. This is main reason for going down the mod-chip route, so i can use the tray again instead of flip top.

could you have disabled the chip somehow?
that would stop the back ups from loading but
originals would still work.
what chip is it, i can try to find you the boot settings
that way you can try a few things.
