Hi there.

I need some help please.

Well by now, there is a new Sony DVD Driver model (DRU-810A), does anybody knows if this supports booktyping?

And another question, I have a little problem with Nero, well actually it is not with Nero, It happnes to be that Nero do not offers TO ME all the tools I need in order to make my DVD, so I was wondering, is posible, to make a DVD image (ISO, BIN, etc) with another program, and afterwards burn the image with Nero and then change the booktype?

i have seen the Sony DRU-810a drive on the sony website, but there is NO information about it and i checked newegg.com (which is where i buy ALL my dvd-burners from) and they do not have it yet (here in the U.S.)

so, if Sony follows suit with their past drives being rebadged Liteons, then yes, most likely you will be able to FIND A WAY to booktype your DVD+R to dvd-rom~ :)

i have the most recent one SOHW-1963S = Sony dru-800a~ and i booktype it on EVERY one of my DVD+R media~, who knows what the Sony dru-810a IS in actuality, we'll all find out in the near future...

and ur 2nd question, YES, it IS possible to make the image...w/ DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink (both free btw) and then use Nero to burn and change booktype~ i currently do THIS identical process with my Sony dru-710a~ :)

well, once again i have learned from the wise one creaky~ i too have a Benq 1640, but an ACTUAL Benq 1640 that i picked up from newegg as per saugmon and catfreak's recommendation~ so, yes, that is a VERY booktype-able drive, too bad it's still in the box and i have yet to use it yet~ :)

thanks for enlightening me buddy, i would HONESTLY, just get a Benq branded 1640 rather than pay for what i expect to be a $100+ U.S. price tag for the Sony dru-810a~ :) while i am partial to Sony drives as i have 3 of them and the bezels and the outer casing DOES in fact look purdy, it's NOT worth the inflated price when the internals are IDENTICAL to that of a drive (Liteon/Benq) for 1/2 the price~ :)

lol, it's only as me and a colleague were reviewing loads of different burners yesterday in preparation for me choosing a new burner, i was trying to find out which lite-on the sony 810 was underneath, we were looking here - http://codeguys.rpc1.org/dvdrw_overview.html and couldn't find the 810, then google paid off with that cdrlabs link. it's all far too confusing :)

..off home shortly, be back online in an hour or so for more confusion if need be, lol

So.. If I buy a Benq BenQ Beige IDE DVD Burner Model DW1640 BG OEM - OEM I will buying the SOny one?

If this is true, well, this Benq cost 40 only and the Sony 100¡ So definitely would be very nice to save 60¡

sounds the same difference as when i went to buy a Sony DRU-800A yesterday, the shop had the Lite-on 1693S right next to them on the shelf for £10 less than the Sony - which is daft as the Sony is a rebadged Lite-on 1693S !!

Hi again.

Well I was checking the Benq model on newegg, an according to them, this model does not support DVD-R DL, and the Sony one does¡ Any body knows if this is true?

Upss you are going to kill me... its me again, I was missing something:

This is an OEM, the Benq one, and I am reading on the newegg forum and apparently this drive required some "special" steps in order to get it working, so I was wondering, is this difficult or not? which would be the normal steps to follow in order to get it working?

Thanks

naw, you're ok (retiring for the night soon though..) - it looks like the drive supports 8x +R DL writing speed and 6x -R DL writing speed.

lifted this from here - http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=1...

copy/pasted this re OEM -

OEM just means Original Equipment Manufacturer. Semiconductor manufacturers have two ways of distributing their products. Retail being the one you're no doubt the most familiar with, and OEM.

If the component is OEM then it means the component is intended to be sold as part of a complete system instead of as an individual component. OEM components provide the manufacturer with the most revenue plus a more secure revenue stream. This is because the OEMs, who are the ones buying the component, must do so under a contract. The contract guarantees that the OEM will make large monthly purchases of the component for a number of months. In return, the the manufacturers provide much better volume pricing to the OEMs.

Basically OEM usually means you get a drive in a brown box with just the bits 'n pieces whereas retail means you get the colourful box etc. someone else may probably explain it better though...- that's if you buy an OEM drive. If you buy a PC for instance, with an OEM drive, it usually needs different firmware to a 'proper' retail drive of the same name. This i think does need someone to word it a little better,; hopefully one of the other guys will bail me out here. i know what i mean, just not sure i'm explaining it right

ok

I have checked it on the Benq home page, it happens to be that the informaiton on newegg is acurate, however, in order to get the drive writing to -r dl a firmware update is necesary.

I bought the BenQ DW1640 BLK OEM from NewEgg. It came in a plastic bag, wrapped in bubble wrap and packed with styrofoam peanuts in a shipping box. The ONLY extra that came with it was a CD of Nero OEM Suite (that I updated for free off of the Nero site). After installation (and setting the jumper to master) I turned the system on, XP immediatly recognized the drive and I was on my way. The first thing that I did was update my firmware to BSLB (it came with BSHB). I then downloaded QSuite which includes the booktype utility and the excellent SolidBurn utility. In over 250 burns using Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell discs I have yet to burn a coaster ...

 The firmware page:
 http://support.benq.com/front/BenqMain.asp?MenuHead=128&ShowType=...

 The software page:
 http://support.benq.com/front/BenqMain.asp?MenuHead=128&ShowType=...

As far as the DVD-R DL support ... I didn't use the drive unril I updated the firmware but I know that It'll burn 'em now.

the Benq 1640 is a very versatile drive, and as catfreak pointed out, it WILL burn to DVD-R DL~, but since the pricing on those are still pretty darn high, i will stick to the DVD+R DL for now~ :)

firmware is important on ANY of these drives you decide to purchase, as long as it's updated, these quality drives WILL burn to the newer generation media as technology progesses, using the RIGHT firmware of course :)

good luck~

This has been a very interesting and informative thread. I'm glad to see the new sony is a benq (my personal fav.) but it kind of pisses me off that they go and change who is making their drives in mid stream especially since after merging with lite-on, lite-on drives have lost some of their charactoristics and reverted to sony's way of doing things (one example lite-on led's on the front used to be tri- color, green read, red write, orange dead drive and now they are sony way green read, flashing green write).

Yes I too would buy a benq DW1640 or litey SOHW-1693S before I would spend $30-40 more for the sony name on the front and especially a sony oem with no name on the front, only difference being sony f/w between them and whatever brand actually made them. Does that make any sense? You know what I mean.

Hi Kivory 666

Thank you for the help.

I'm from Mexico, but first I have to tell you that I dont want it shipped to Mexico, I actually have a fisical address on the USA, is in Laredo, and I want it shipped to Laredo not Mexico, Why? Well because the shipping charges to Mexico are about 30 - 40 dls, and if I ship it to Laredo is only 5-10 dls.

well, then, i would suggest www.newegg.com as i KNOW for a fact they will ship ANYWHERE in the U.S.~ :)

they also have one of the best pricing around on the internet, and i have always purchased (well, 90%) of my computer hardware from them in the past...never a problem and since i happen to be in California, often times i receive it in approx. 2 days from the day of ordering, pretty fast i must say, too bad i pay sales tax, but, that is besides the point~ :)

good luck~

p.s. from newegg, it's actually only $4 U.S. to ship to ya~

kivory,

Some of the reviews are hilarious. Here's one for a litey 1693S.
Quote:

Burns DVD coasters 20 percent of the time.
This drive is very 'ify. Out of 25 pack of TDK DVD+R's burned, 5 coasters. Not a good ratio at all. Used both Nero and Easy Media Creator. If I burn to 2X Rewritable media, everything comes up roses. This drive sucks when writting 6x and higher.
We both know what the problem is most likely with those TDK DVD+R discs CMAGS. It's really funny to read the bad reviews on good drives. You can tell right away they are useing piss poor quality media, they have an installation problem, or are burning too fast and they blame it all on the drive. One dude was upset because his new benq wouldn't work on cable select. Another was tickled pink because his would burn at 16x right out of the box (if only he knew). Those reviews are so funny.

u KNOW i despise TDK media, especially their OWN coded ones ie.
