Absolutely new to this as I just installed my first DVD-RW drive today. I copied video from my Sharp Camcorder to my stand-alone Emerson DVD-RW recorder. Now I am trying to copy the DVD-RW disc to a DVD-R for a friend whose DVD player will not play the DVD-RW discs. I have the OEM Nero Suite which includes Nero Express, Nero BackItUp, NeroVision Express, Nero Cover Designer, Nero ShowTime, and Nero Recode. Also have the BenQ QSuite. I open Nero StartSmart, Choose Copy Disc, and Nero Express opens. I ran the simulation and Nero says disc is o.k. to copy. I set up for DVD high compatibility mode and used book type settings for DVD-ROM. Chose Quick Copy with writing speed at maximum. Clicked on Burn and Nero burned the disc although it took 25 minutes to do it. After Nero said the burn was successful I tried the disc and it will not play on the computer on any program I have installed. That includes Nero ShowTime, WinDVD (which says the application is asking it to shut down in an unusual way), and Windows Media Player. Also tried to play in Emerson stand-alone and it won't play there either. Since installing the drive and software I have had other discs that won't play also. Not all, but some. What am I doing wrong? Would appreciate any help.

What is the brand name/format/and speed rate of those blank dvd-r's?: I believe you meant dash the way you worded your post.Use neroinfotool to find the MID code of those blanks from both rw and r discs.
What is actual burner Model# of benq? 1620/1625/1640?
Only the plus format can be booktyped.Dash cannot be booktyped.

Big no-no,especially with these benqs. If you are burning 8x media,Nero will burn them at 12x and 16x if the max speed is ticked.Keep it at 4x max to start with.
Did you download the INCD packet from Nero? This can cause many problems. Usually advised not to be downloaded.
I only use my Nero oem 6.0.0.21b and no trouble re-ripping backups on the fly.The only packet I downloaded was NeroVision express2 se.It does everything I want it to for cds and dvds.
You may even want to download DVD Decrypter. It can also booktype.Re-ripping backups on that program is easy, Simple Mode ISO read to hard drive, the Mode ISO write/find the mds file/click burn. It gives you a second burn program to see if Nero or burner may be the problem.
Tried Maxell DVD-R 4X and FujiFilm DVD-R 4X. Trying to copy from Maxell DVD-RW 2X. Benq model 1640. Writing speed gave me choice of maximum, then 2.4 and lower. I did not download the Incd packet from Nero. I did read about that problem on the forum before I installed the drive. While installing Nero it did tell me to uninstall Sonic DLA, which I did do. The Maxell DVD-RW disc MID came up n/a as did the FujiFilm DVD-R. The Maxell DVD-R disc kept coming up as no disc inserted in Infotool even after I closed it out and restarted, even refreshed. Hope I answered your questions o.k. Thanks.
Don't check quick copy. This is called burning on the fly, is apt to cause write errors and only works if you have 2 dvdrw's or a dvdrw drive and a dvd-rom drive. It allows you to copy from one optical drive straight to another without first copying to the hdd and is not recommended. Keep the burn speed to 4x or under. You can move up to 8x later if all goes well at4x. Try this free proggy to ID your media http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Also it will tell you the firmware vs in brackets after the make and model of your drive. Let us know what f/w vs. you have. It may need to be updated.
You can also use DVD Decrypter as mentioned by saugmon to copy your dvd.
O.K. Mort81. Ran DVD Identifier. The Maxell DVD-RW I was trying to copy is manufactured by OPTODISC W002. The Fujifilm DVD-R and the Maxell DVD-R I was trying to record to are manufactured by TYG01. I guess I didn't explain what I was doing very well. I have the BenQ and a dvd-rom drive. So I was trying to copy from the dvd-rom to the BenQ. The drive is BenQ DVD DD DW1640 (FW BSLB). Also on the DVD Identifier I found "Warning: MODE SENSE Is Obsolete and Not Always Properly Supported. My DVD-ROM was not supported by DVD Identifier.
Did some checking and found my DVD-ROM had a firmware update available so I did that. DVD-ROM is an LG (HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B). Also I have discovered that since trying to do the recording my DVD-RW I was trying to copy from no longer works in my computer. Tried different media players and it won't run in any of them. It does still run in my Emerson stand-alone.
