We are pleased to announce the review of the Lite-On SHV-16H5s, which Lite-On IT B.V. was kind enough to send us for review. The features of this DVD burner features are pretty much identical to that of the Lite-On SHW-1635S, but with the addition of LightScribe label writing technology. LightScribe works by using the drive's laser to burn the label onto the label side of LightScribe compatible media. The drive?s software bundle consists of the Nero Express 6.6 suite and Power DVD 5.0.

You know what i find interesting, the fact that i never took into consideration why my discs have begun to skip, until i read a few posts up about label's possibly being the issue. It is true though, on 2 discs i have made certain parts freeze or skip completely, i'm about to forgo a nice looking label for a functioning disc.

I found media to be my problem. I have always used labels with no problem. I used Ritek-Riata, Maxwell and got pretty good results. Since I started using Ty-Yuden DVD media, made in Japan, I have had no skips or digitizing at all.

@Tashacat, congrats, you wont be disappointed. With mine I firstly get my DVD covers from http://www.cdcovers.cc , once cover is downloaded, right click and save(I save mine to my pictures).
Open CD LablePrint, New>image>image file>open>click OK> OK again>print >check your work>print and wait for OK before inserting tray>OK again and sit back and wait 30 seconds or so and then smile broadly.
Too easy.

The printer comes with a seperate tray. Place the blank disc on this tray. At the front of the printer (just below the lid) pull down the flap, this is where the tray is inserted(it has the word CANON printed on the front of flap) push tray into groove until it reaches the triangular marks align. One on tray and one on flap.
The printer should have come with a CD-R Print Guide manual,it's all set out on pages 2 through 5. Mahes it a lot simpler than I can.

Tashacat, I too have a Canon Pixma iP 4000. After reading the previous posts by gwendolin about being able to print directly to DVD/CD media I was very excited to know that I could do this with my newly purchased printer. However, my manual said nothing about how to do this. Being extremely curious, I called the Canon technical support line and was told that this feature was not available on the Canon Pixma 4000's that were sold in the United States. Apparently only the models that were sold outside the US have this capability.
Gwendolin, where did you purchase yours? If anyone knows a 'hack' to get my American Canon to accept DVD's please let me know. If not, I bought a BenQ 1640 lightscribe today, so I guess I will have to be happy with that.

I was not aware that the Canon ip4000 was available in the US. I live in Australia and mine comes with the feature and that was the reason for choosing this particular model. I assumed that tashacat also resided in Aus. I believe that in the US the printer with these features is the Epson.
I trust I have not caused any confusion but a simple check at the time of purchase would show features available. Cheers.

I bought mine a couple of months ago and was not looking for this function when I bought it, so don't worry. I was just excited for a few minutes when I thought I might have this added feature.
Does anyone Know why Canon decided to give this great feature to everyone else in the world and exclude the US?

Hi Gwen, and guys, well 'the jury's still out' for me, regarding Lightscribe, as I said in an earlier post, inspired by this thread I bought a R300, and the results are fantastic.
It came with its own disc copying program, so any photo I have on my PC I can put onto a disc easily. I also like dabbling with photography, and the results there, are impressive. Which leads me onto another point, if I want to back up a disc, I photograph it, download it, and print.
I'm using Ritek full-face silver G05 discs' which give a nice holographic effect. And today, after much consideration... I bought me Pioneers latest external offering. (at a knockdown after Xmas sale price, with free delivery)..:)
So for what they're worth?
My conclusions are; Lightscribe, at this moment in time, is a one dimensional luxury, and in answer to the original question. No I don't think it's worth it.

Not sure I agree with you on your post Gringle. You just bought a $150 printer to be able to print lables on your DVD's. You could have spent an extra $20 over the price of a standard DVD burner to step up to the LightScribe Burner. Its not like the technology is coming at a major cost here. If you are in the market for a DVD burner, I think it is well worth it to drop the extra $20 for the LightScribe. I think that the inkjet DVD labeling is cool, but I wouldn't say that lightscribe isn't worth it........its $20 more for a cool feature, and it's certainly not any more of a one dimentional luxury than an inkjet printer that can print directly to CD/DVD media.

@Firemandb, heres where your obvious lack of knowlege shows. If you read earlier, much earlier in this thread you will see that I investigated both Lightscribe versus Printer.
Question: Can your lightscribe be used to print out family photos
or can it be used to print out documents
or can you print a photo on a DVD in 30 seconds
I believe the answer to ALL of these questions is a resounding NO , so before you make comments as you have done then may I suggest you do your homework on the subject.
Neither Gringle or myself are fools.

Well Gwen - some things just never die :)
I'll stick with my Epson R320 - so far doing a great job on printable discs (at least 400+ in about a year) and does a good job with photos too.

Woa.....Down girl. No one called you or anybody else a fool. I was merely making the point that if your in the market for a new burner, it's not major investment to upgrade to the lightscribe, and I definitely wouldn't say it isn't worth it.
The inkjet printables are very cool, and I wish my Canon would do it but it doesn't. I am not trying to tick you off, seriously. I am a Newbie and you are a Senior Member so I know were my place is (my tail is tucked between my legs as we speek). Please, don't hate me?
P.S. You do realize that this thread is 8 pages long, right? Am I supposed to research every response this thoroughly?

What kind of printable dvd media do you use? Brand etc. I find the ones that i am using are not as good quality as i suspected, i am using the verbatim datalife plus full hub, which are matte i believe, do you know of any full hub gloss ones? I am trying to achieve the best photo quality possible w/o continuing to use labels. I have an IP5000 btw. My printables don't exactly line up either, always have that white ring. What software are you using and have you had any probs?

Having read it, I came up with the conclusion, that I thought (?) at this time, Lightscibe is a one dimensional luxury.
In this modern technological world, things change so fast, Gwen outlined the photographic benefits of a decent photo printer...
And as I reach for my 6mp camera; hanging from a rusty nail on the wall, with the intention of putting the disc on my knee, pressing a couple of buttons, and transfering the image to my pc...
I can't help wondering; why don't someone, invent stainless steel nails?

@qwik3r2, yep those 3 months have really flown, i was a junior member then.
The DVDs I am using now are Verbatim, ink jet printable. I was using another type but wasnt happy with the burning quality, I print All of the white on the verbatim whereas on the other disc I was left with a white inner circle.
Basically I am just using the software that came with the printer, I was informed yesterday in another post this option to print to DVD wasnt available with Canon in USA so I assume you reside elsewhere.
