I believe he already has the Epson R 220,but I agree I would wait you can get the Canon tray cheaper if you just keep and eye on Ebay.

paiger651 & gwendoline, thanks for the input.

Gwen I already have the Epson R220. I got it about a week ago. I paid $99.00 for it at OfficMax. I could have bought it on the Internet for as low as $60.00 plus shipping. It prints Cd/DVD's great. That is all I will ever use it is to print CD/DVD's.

paiger651, I will wait until I see it for $20.00 at Ebay I wouldn't mind having to work on my Canon ip4000 and Canon ip6000. I found all kinds of instructions on the Internet on how to program your registry so the printer will show Print DVD on the printer menu and set up the print tray and remove the plastic insert on my printers.

Anyone that wants to change the menu in their Canon Pixma to include the printable disc on the paper menu follow this procedure.

In your registry entry: ?[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Print\Printers\Canon PIXMA iP6000\PrinterDriverData]? CnmFSI_CDRSWITCH

If you change the hex value to "1", you get all the missing print options regardless of what driver you are using or software. From there you just select Printable disc as the media type, Disc Tray as the Paper Source, and CD-R Tray B as the Paper Size.

I just did it and it works great. Still no tray yet.
This is neat!!!

tashacat, you will also have to change your printers firmware destination code using the power on/off and resume buttons on the front of the printer once you get that tray.Yea it's pretty neat about all the hidden goody's Canon left on there.

paiger651, do you have written instructions on how to change the firmware destination for the tray? They would be appreciated.

gwendoline, do you happen to have the link for Canon parts in Australia? I tried to find a parts place in Australia and they asked for Australia zip code to locate a dealer, duh.....

I don't know if they will send a part to the US?

Set CD-R mode to enable.
I. Make sure the printer is off but is plugged in

II. Hold down [RESUME] (Triangle pointed down) and hold down [POWER] and wait 5 seconds or so.

Release [RESUME] but Continue to hold [POWER]. Double click [RESUME]. then Release [POWER].

Check to see you are in service mode by clicking [RESUME], than [POWER]. This should cause the printer to print a simple diagnostic that'll list it's ROM number and list CDR SENSOR=OK in red for the last line.

III. Click the [RESUME] 5 times then click [POWER].This is the Destination setting option.

IV. Click the [RESUME] 5 times "again" and then [POWER]. This is non Japan, CD-R enabled, letter paper mode.

Press [RESUME] then [POWER] again.

V. To confirm the new settings and return to printing mode press [POWER]. ß { Don?t forget otherwise it will default to JAPAN IPx100

Edit-Once you make these changes you may have to do the registry hex key edit again.

To me? No.

To the guy who sells his finished product for 10-20 dollars. Yes.

When evolution selects its agents, it does so at a cost, makes demands in exchange for singularity, and you may be asked to do something against your very nature. This force, evolution, is not sentimental. Like the Earth itself, it knows only the hard facts of life's struggle with death. All you can do is hope and trust that when you have served its needs faithfully, there may still remain some glimmer of the life you once knew.

My computer came with lightscribe and i love it. It does take a little while to burn an entire background image onto the disc but the finished product is worth it. The discs endup looking quite professional and very nice. It is way better than regular paper labels!

I just purchased both.

I think for speed and quality, the Epson R220 is the way to go. Can get it well under $100. It prints labels in about 30 seconds. Very good quality...looks like the original if you have a good quality scan. They do recommend 24 hours of drying time. I was able to get 200 writeable CD's for less than I could get 100 Lightscribe CD's. The cost of the ink probably makes is a wash. The cost of the printer was comparable to the cost of the lightscribe drive.

Lightscribe takes between 10 and 20 minutes to print mainly text labels. Add a lot of graphics and good night. The end result looks good, but is monochrome.

I would recommend the Epson printer to anyone as the way to go. Only negative I can see is that I am not sure how the labels will stand up to any moisture.

As a result of this thread, I bought an Epson R300, and I use 'Pressit sprayfix' to seal the discs' and photos' afterwards. I also find it quicker to put my digi camera into text mode, take a snap of the disc and run it straight into the Epsom disc copy program.

I think the r300 is great, the only problem is the price of the ink, and Epsom have closed down 2 or 3 compatible makers here in the UK.

But if you don't mind the smell; it's still on offer at 79pence a cartridge, from others. lol

@Gringle, welcome back, how have you been. Now you have your new toy you dont come around here much anymore, good to hear you're happy with it. I just purchased a DVD Tray for tashacat here in Oz and all up with postage to US it only set him/her back US$15.00.
I'm sure tashacat will soon be enjoying her new found ability to get her Canon up and labeling. Cheers.

gringle, I don't know what country you are located but I get my Epson and Canon ink in the US at the following link. The Canon cartridges are .99 each and the Epson R220 & 300 are $2.25 each.

UK Tashcat £0.79 GBP works out about $1.41 USD

I don't buy the smelly ones lol, I pay about $1.75 USD for mine.

Deliver costs' are extra but in bulk, it doesn't add too much.
