Hi,
I''m relatively new to DVD burning so if I'm asking a question that is kinda basic, well, please bear with me. I'm copying some older movies produced in 1946 and 1949 because they are my favorite and I'm only copying them for me and my library. Because they are on the older side, I only used DVD Shrink and not Decrypter and burned them with Nero. The burning went fine and they played OK on my DVD player but approximately 1/2 hour into each film all of a sudden the movie started breaking up, jumping around and/or just went blank. Is that a copy protection getting in the way causing the problems with viewing or might that be a problem with the blanks? Any thoughts? Thanks.

I highly doubt that has anything to do with copy protection.
What type of media did you use to copy the movies and how fast did you burn? These are VERY important issues when burning DVDs.

Hi,
My DVD blank is Philips DVD-R 1-8x and the movies were burnt at 8x. I see that 4x is recommended here. Is that a better speed even though it takes longer? Also how do I change the speed in Nero then? Thanks again.

OK, personally, I think 8x is too fast. When I first started backing up movies, I burned at 8x as well, but a lot of the movies started skipping, so I cut the burn time in half and have had nothing but success. If I were you, I would definately reduce the burn speed. It'll turn out better for you in the long run. Also, finalize your burns if you don't do that already.
As for the media you're using, I really don't know if they're good or bad. I've never used them before. Someone else may be able to help you with this issue. I would recommend using good media in the future such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Ritek.

When I burn it with Nero isn't the disk automatically finalized before it is ejected? Also, can I only regulate the burn speed when I'm ready to burn a disk or can I do that now and how - can't find anything?

I use Nero Burning ROM and I have to make sure Finalize (No further writing possible!) is ticked.
I think you have to choose the burn speed when you're ready to burn the DVD because different types of media support different burn speeds. The standard is 8x, but there are some 16x media out there now. If you want to burn slower, you'll have to manually choose the speed you want.

sorry to say, you got urself some REALLY crappy media~ Philips is a definite NO NO in my book~ :)

Philips DVD-R 4.7GB CMC MAG. AE1 8x (ouch, CMC MAG is one of the worst manufacturers out there)

i would suggest some better media Chas521, check my sig. for suggestions...also, when encoding with Shrink, after it's done and right before the burn w/ Nero...make sure you bring the speed down to 4x...8x is TOO FAST for crap media, you are prone to get errors this way.

good luck~

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03

Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Many thanks everyone. I reduced my burn speed to 4x and even though I am using the crappy disks for now [will stick to Verbatim as recommended], the backup went fine. Thanks for being there.
