hi guys,
i am going to invest in a boot disk to back up my games for my ps2. i have a slimline which has not been modified or chipped in any way and am in the uk. have had a nose about and there seem to be a couple of options, swap magic and ps2 breaker pro are the ones i have seen so far.
which one do you suggest ?
oh, also not sure if i need to buY NTSC or PAL versions. Am i correct in thinking this is to do with DVD regions ? if so which version should i buy for the UK ?

I say buy the swap magic disk (im thinking its PAL for uk) since breaker pro loads ps1 games. you dont even need a chip to use swap magic, u can just use the tissue/straw method

To put it simply, Swap Magic (any version) doesn't work with DVD9s at all, but thankfully there are really few DVD9 games, and the handful that there are have all been successfully shrunk to DVD5 size (even the troublesome GT4). Like other people have said, you need both Swap Magic and Breaker Pro if you want to play PS2 and PSX backups, respectively; if you have no need for PSX stuff, then Swap Magic by itself will do just fine.
Buy the PAL version, since you live in the UK. You'll still be able to play NTSC imports from abroad by changing video mode from Normal to PAL if you need to.
I wouldn't recommend the straw method myself, even though it's free, because I recall that you need to keep the lid open at all times, which is both lame and not healthy for the PStwo (dust and electronics don't mix). I wouldn't recommend the slimline replacement fliptop lid, either, because the fliptop is incredibly ugly (I have one), expensive, and has a hole for opening the lid which lets dust in at all times. Personally, I use a tape/tissue mod, which is also free, though all of the above (and a few others like the slimtools/plugs) will work.

Here is wat i did: Buy a swap disc (i bought SM 3.6, but it has loading problems; Disk Read Error), then load a memory card exploit like Cog Swap Loader onto your Memory card, and use a trigger disc to load it. Works every time for me :)

Thanks for all the advice guys,
so the gist of this is, correct me if im wrong but i need to purchase swap magic 3.6 in PAL.
Have looked at the diagrams from the links provided below, must admit i dont like the idea of taking the thing apart for the slide card or the flip top.
the straw/tissue method, i guess im covering a sensor of some type whilst changing discs to do this. Does this mean i wont have to splash out more cash, and wont have to disasemble ps2 by using this method ? although this method doesnt sound very hi-tech, without trying im prefering this method at the mo.

gone for a package that includes the disk and the slide tool both for less than 15 squid.

Good luck. Hopefully you have a v12 instead of a v13 (v13 has the warranty sticker on the bottom of the console instead of on the side), since the v13 is a bit harder to install the slimtool on.

but it also doesnt have a bad laser like the v12 so swapping wont damage it

hi tok,
no wories mate, its been delivered and it looks like ive got the right one. havn't sussed it out yet though. Havent worked out how to back a disk up yet. Gonna see if i can borrow a disk a mate has backed up first to see if i can get it to work.
When ive got that sorted ill work out how to do a back up copy of a ps2 game of my own. Was hoping it was as simple as backing up a dvd film which im pretty good at, but i can now see its not so simple. tried a straightforward copy disk routine with Nero, but as you can guess it went straight in the bin.
Have had a little nose and seen there are some threads on here for backing up a ps2 game, but if anyone can give me a complete idiots guide to backing up a ps2 game it would be much apreciated.

Yeah use DVD Decrypter. Burn on good DVD-R's. Use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, TDK, Maxell, Sony, or Phillips DVD-R's. Burning at 4x on 8x DVD-R's seems to work for most people. it is pretty hard to install te straw on spot c, could somebody please clearify that because i am having too much problem tryng to install it.
