Is there really a difference in quality between the sony dvd -r or +r made in japan or tawain, and if there is, then what is the difference. Is it quality? Right now there is a sale at Staples for a 50 pack of sony media for $17.84, should i look for japan or tawain or does it not matter?

Sony-r make in taiwan are are prodisc ( suck media dont buy it ok) sony +r make in taiwan ( are richkol media ( very good media too) but I think sony dvd-r+r make in japan are the top media of all.

Always look for "Made In Japan".
It's my understanding that the Taiwan companies don't do the best job, at applying the dye to the disc. Although they may burn ok, and look ok, to start with, a few months down the road, when you want to watch the movie again, the picture will freeze and/or pixelate, and the sound will freeze and stutter. So, it is better to be safe, than sorry. Look for "Made In Japan". :o)

@the good16...i dont know what sony dvd-r you've bought but sony dvd-r that i have seen & "use" all code out as Sony08D1...which is 1st class media....so @halfhere either sony dvd+r or dvd-r are good choices..both are 1st class media.

If you want the BEST Sony DVD's buy the Made in Japan +R's. Those are YUDEN000 T02's. By far the best of manufacturers. Heard the SONYD08's are good, but not as good as the YUDEN's. When buying Sony always look for MADE IN JAPAN!!!

2.4 Celeron;512k ram; 80gig HD; 60gig HD; Windows XP(SP1).
Sony DRU-710A (BYX4)
DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter.
TYG02;YUDEN002;MCC blanks.
Favorite Media: Sony 8x+R(MADE IN JAPAN)

Laptop: 1.4 Ghz;256k ram; 40 gig HD;Windows XP
NEC ND-6650A Burner

Yes.... there is a big difference between the Sony M.I.J and M.I.T - the Sony 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan" is manufactured by Yuden Co. Ltd, which is genuine Taiyo Yuden. The same thing apply to the Fuji 8X DVD+R "Made In japan" - this is another high quality Yuden media.

No offense, and or no disrespect to M.I.T, but I prefer the M.I.J media over any other places. As long as Yuden Co. Ltd keep manufacturing their authentic Taiyo Yuden media, I'll keep supporting them regardless.

However, the choice is yours to make - it's your money, your call.

Taiyo Yuden ROCK...!!!

Yes, that's true, but again, it's my understanding, from what I THOUGHT I had learned here, that the GOOD Verbs are made in Singapore. Am I wrong about this?

@JVC,

the "good discs" you are referring to regarding Verbatim is NOT necessarily the ones made in Singapore :) in MY OWN opinion, after over a THOUSAND burns using ONLY the Made in Taiwan Verbatims, i can safely say that my bias towards Verbatim would be that of the "made in taiwan" flavor~ these are the "good ones" in MY OPINION~ :) while i haven't used any of the made in singapores, as they are the OLDER stock here, and this holds true in MANY areas, MOST of the Verbatims you are going to find will be in fact, MADE IN TAIWAN, and these MCC coded ones, are the cream of the crop~ :)

hope that clarifies just a little bit, i am in NO WAY saying the made in singapore Verbs are bad, they probably are EQUAL to the made in taiwans, but, since ALL the Verbatim nowadays that are AVAILABLE to ME, have ALL been MADE IN TAIWAN, i give my vote of confidence to the MADE IN TAIWAN Verbatims ANYDAY~ and they are GREAT media~ :)

regarding the Sony, once again, my PERSONAL opinion would be to get the 8x DVD+R that are MADE IN JAPAN...while the Sony coding is good quality, on MY setup, nothing compares to the quality of the Taiyo Yudens, or in this case, the YUDEN000T02s that have been mentioned already~ :)

good luck people...

I guess I'm not learning as well as I thought............. :o)
Glad that Taiwan can do something right (on blanks).
I've used "Made In Taiwan" verb cds. Have some printable ones now. Never had any problems, with ANY BRAND of cd blanks.
Only verbs I've used so far for dvds, are the DL ones, and they've always been the "Made In Singapore" variety. Never a problem with those either.

I just keep on learning stuff here...................

we all are continually learning on here...as i mentioned, absolutely NOTHING wrong w/ the made in singapores, i just wanted to make it clear NOT to discredit the made in taiwan Verbatims as they are also VERY GOOD quality~ :)

it's the media that is made in china or the dreaded CMC MAGs from taiwan that you need to worry about~ :)

happy burning~

@halfhere

I have always been a big fan of Sony Media and most have been the Made In Taiwan type. I prefer Sony DVD-R media code SONY08D1 over the Sony DVD+R media code SONY D11, both of which are made in Taiwan. I no longer purchase the Taiwan Sony DVD+R, not because they are bad, but tests show that my burns are better with either TY DVD+R, (Japan YUDEN000 T02,) or the Sony DVD-R, (Taiwan SONY08D1.)

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/229009

The above thread shows different tests with three different media. Look at the PI Failure results on them which show the slight difference between the burns, all at 8X. All three had a quality score of 99 out of 100. They all show extremely well and flawless on my large LCD TV's. The Sony DVD+R media from Taiwan only gave Quality Scores of 96-98, never consistent with my setup but still very good scores none the less.

So on MY setup, I no longer use the Made in Taiwan Sony DVD+R media since all the others can be purchased for the same monies and produce more consistent results for me.
