i would PERSONALLY get an exchange, if this is the 1st time that you have purchased Maxell media with the CMC MAG coding, it SHOULD be your LAST time too~ :)

i wouldn't feel confident putting ANYTHING important on CMC MAGs, that's just a personal opinion that i'm sure many will agree on...if you can, get an exchange, don't make things harder on yourself later down the road... :)

good luck~

I heard of maxell -4x using a few cmags in their yellowtops on the smaller 3 or 5 pack. This is the first news I have heard on their gold top dash 8x!!!! UGHHH!

I'd exchange them for the japanese maxells.

That's why I stick with the maxells that are made in japan.Usually the taiwanese are riteks.

bassnut: How were these cmags packaged? 3/5/10 pack with jewel cases or 15/25/50 pack spindles?

Just because the disc looks like the others doesn't mean it's manufactured the same way... ALWAYS look for Made in Japan

Ya .... this is the first time I have got gold tops that were cmc .... All the others and I mean around 300 have been mxl manufactured code. My original thought is to return them which I will do on my way home from work Tuesday. Too bad as I loved the maxells in the past cheap and decent quality. I mostly use them when my girlfriend needs some or wants a copy of something as I mostly burn TY now or Rioch "Love those pearl white inkjet printables". I wish I could get made in japan here but they are rare here in Ottawa Canada though I have found some in 15 and 25 packs but prefer to buy the 50 pk which these are. My second bad experience with Maxell in a row. Go figure

I'll keep those -8x gold tops, made in taiwan by cmags,on my caution list. I burned quite a few of them, both the Japanese MXL-rg03 and Ritek-G05 MID codes and they were very good.

It's only a matter of time before the rest of the world may be flooded with maxell cmags.

Those full hub printable maxells should be good, especially in the plus format. Of all the maxell cmag media I have heard reports on,it's always the dash format.Hard telling when they start using cmags on their plus discs.

Looking those labels on the maxells will be tougher to pick out on the dash format. The Made in Taiwan maxells were usually ritek media in the dash 4x and dash 8x and plus 8x.Riteks are very good, but now with cmags in the mix, also made in taiwan, damn hard to find out which ones they are.

I'd still go by Made in Japan on those Maxells. If you want quality ritek media, then get the Office Depot brand 8x. They have been coding as Ritek for both formats, and can be had for 25-30 cents each when on sale at OD.I've burned 300 and only 1 playback coaster from them.

I have purchase a few spindle of 50 Maxell DVD at Futur Shop, on it was the first I run into CMC MAG.AE1. After searching the web, I've run into this Comparison test ( http://www.dvd-recordable.org/Reviews+index-req-showcontent-id-10... )and I don't know what to think anymore. Why is CMC MAG.AE1 so bad to you guys ?

for me, it's mainly cus i can't escape them - i must run into them about 10 times EVERY night (ugh!) - i go thru endless logfiles and they're nearly always CMC Mag. They are atrocious and horrid. A glance at my sig should say it all :)

I've never seen any Maxells made by CMC MAG before. May be it's because "Made In Japan" is my top priority when it comes to media, regardless if it' Yuden, Fuji, Maxell or Sony.

I highly recommend you to exchange them for the one that says; "Made In Japan" on the package or spindle.

Some of those pesky stand alones can really pick up the lower quality difference on the cmags that I have used. Burned great on my benqs, below actual speed rated. But a few of my relatives players do have trouble with them. I've been getting much better quality media on sale for around the same price or not much more than those manufacturers that use cmag like TDk/memorex/HP.Teons use a ton of cmags and you can get them dirt cheap.I've even run into teons that were made by Ricohjpn! Sometimes you have to take a chance!

I did have a couple playback coasters.

I'd return all the discs (including the coasters) to Wally Mart ... I've done this before and nothing was said ...

They have a great return policy

Maybe if enough people return these low quality Maxells the Maxell company will get it through their thick heads that quality is more important than their profits.

Lets keep returning these Fake Maxells!

In my opinion, it would be wise to inform Maxell directly.

http://www.maxellcanada.com/contact.htm?theme=Default

http://www.maxell-usa.com/Content/Pages/Page.asp?Section=maxellus...

Unfortunately, many stores such as FutureShop, BestBuy, and Walmart "resell" returns, at a discounted price, and do NOT return to Maxell. I would hate to see the above stores not carry Maxell, as I, personally, am limited as to where I can find media.

I just bought 2 100 pack (Made in Taiwan) 8X spindles of Maxell from FutureShop. I noticed one with a grey bottom compared to black. I opened both and the grey bottom one has RITEKG05 as a media ID and the black one has CMC MAG AE1. I found a single disc made in Japan at 16x at a local music shop just to compare.

Upon looking at the 2 discs and a MIJ disc, there are differences that one can see in the label just by looking at the them; even in a sealed package (spindles).

I think I'll scan pictures. (thinking...)

The CMC discs have a large silver ring in the center of the disc. The RITEK discs have a small ring. The MXL disc pretty much looks like the RITEK disc.

But there is a clear difference between CMC and RITEK. It seems there is a primer label applied before the gold one. The CMC disc has a clear silver ring and the circular portion of the gold meets this primer.

As for the RITEK and MXL discs, the gold label surpasses the primer label and makes the silver center smaller.

There is also a difference in the PN or Part Number writen on the outside label. All 3 are completely different numbers.

RITEK:PN: 050975/RT
CMC:PN: 050992/MDM
MXL:PN: 051071/MDM

I'm taking back these CMC discs tomorrow.

Anyone else notice this?

nicely done xtlee, never really stopped to take a gander as i don't use Maxell very much, but, thanks for pointing that out~ :)

def. RETURN those CMC MAG crap discs~ :) the Riteks as well as the MXL coded ones are good quality, it's just the CMC MAG that makes Maxell a company to be somewhat "weary" about

Thank goodness the cmags haven't hit the maxell plus format!

I do refrain from recommending maxell dash media now after reports of cmags on both 4x and 8x dash taiwanese media. Not many, but too close to try chancing it.

I went out today to all the top stores...BestBuy, Futureshop, Staples etc. Nobody has Japan media. Everything is Taiwan or China. I found one odd store that had a 5 pack of Fuji 8X DVD-R MIJ and Sony DVD+R MIJ, but that's it. I also picked up 1 last spindle of Maxells that are RITEKG05. Other than that they are all CMC.

As mackdl stated you should raise your concerns with maxell .... here is the response I got back from them......

Good morning. I would like to tell you that who ever makes our product has to
conform to our standards and nothing less. I have also forwarded your email to
the product manager so he is aware of your concerns.

Regards
Melanie

and what I wrote

Product of interest: DVD-R ... DVD+R
Uses Maxell products: Yes DVD-R ... DVD+R
Inquiry To: Corporate

Information Request / Comments: (below)
==============================================================================
I have used your DVD-R and DVD+R now as long as I can remember and have been
extreemly happy with the product. Recently I bought some DVD-R disks and when I
checked the manufacturer of the disk I was shocked to find they were
manufactured by CMC Magnetics, who make some of the worst disk out there by far.
I hope this is not something that will be a mainstay with Maxell disks because I
will not continue to buy them if CMC is the manufacturer. I buy quality .....
always have and always will .... CMC is not quallity ..... it is junk.
