Hi all
I have successfully used DVD Decrypter to date with no problems whatsoever to rip movies to my HDD before burning copies with Nero, DVD Shrink, DVD X Copy Platinum RF, CloneDVD2 and so on.
That is until the other day... when I ran into trouble with one of my discs.
DVD Decrypter starts okay as normal and proceeds to rip the disc and then aborts with an error message.
Here's the log: -

Having done my homework with what I've learnt from various people here on the AD forums, I know that a CRC error is or can be caused by a dirty or scratched disc so I've tried to clean the disc and tried again but I still get the same message as above.
So, what's the difference between the CRC and CIRC error above and what does it mean?
What's next to try - any help, replies and suggestions is gratefully appreciated.
Thanks

Here is some info on CIRC errors, or C1 and C2. What it comes down to is that your disk does not seem to be good, and since cleaning did not help then take it back and get another original.
Quote: Cross Interleave Reed-Solomon Code (CIRC)
All CDs incorporate an error detection and correction scheme known as Cross Interleave Reed-Solomon Code (CIRC). It would be impossible to make a usable CD without this error correction, since many errors are generated playing even the best discs under ideal conditions. CIRC is a powerful error detection code that can detect and completely correct all errors on a reasonably good disc. It relies on two principles for its operation. One is redundancy. Extra parity bytes are added to the data stream to facilitate error detection and correction. These extra bytes reduce the available capacity of the CD by about 25%.
The other principle is interleaving. The data is not recorded on the disc in its natural order as it would be on magnetic tape. The data are organized into blocks of 24 bytes (called ?symbols? in CIRC terminology.) These are the blocks referred to in the Block Error Rate measure. Four parity bytes are added to each block of 24 symbols (bytes), making the block 32 bytes long. The data symbols belonging to one block are then distributed over a fairly large area of the disc by ?interleaving? them with symbols from other data blocks. The 24 symbols of one data block end up distributed over 109 data blocks. The advantage of this technique is that physical defects on the disc do not eliminate complete data blocks, but instead, parts of many blocks. These partially bad blocks can then be reconstructed using the parity information.
CIRC error correction is done in two stages referred to as C1 and C2, with deinterleaving of the data taking place between the stages. The C1 stage is used to recover from random errors caused by noise in the signal; the C2 stage is used to recover from larger errors caused by physical defects such as scratches and dirt. The error correction chip typically can correct two bad symbols per block in the first stage, and two bad symbols per block in the second stage. Some chips can correct four bad symbols in the second stage in some cases.

Where you running AnyDVD or DVD43 in the background, because it is showing the key is N/A, or was this disk unprotected?

Hi Arniebear
Thanks for your reply - yes, this disc is an unprotected one, so what now - shall I get another original one, and is there no other way round sorting the defective disc out?
There is no CSS/CPPM or RCE protection on this disc whatsoever.
I look forward to your response.

You can try ripping with another program and see if that works, or try another drive, see if your burner will rip it. I have come across this problem with some UK TV Series disks, they were unprotected but also had a bad press, it was not until my third return that I managed to get one backed up. You can try ISO Buster maybe that will get by the problem

Thanks again for the reply.
I will try and see if I can get hold of another original disc to try and run it through DVD Decrypter.
Can I also use Isobuster with DVD's as well as CD's?
Thanks again.

When I have a stubborn disc I use DVD Fab Decrypter...it's slow but usually will churn through any rips that DVD Decrpter and DVD Shrink can't handle. And as Arniebear said try ripping with another drive.

I was wondering about that. I tried the DVDFab Decrypter and it couldn't copy it either.
Yea, It's one of these special Media Center Computers with the 8-in-1 memory card readers (4 drive letters, H, I, J, K ), 1 CD/DVD-RW Drive (E), 1 CD-ROM Drive (F), The Hard Drive (C), and 3 External Hard Drives (L, M, N)
I think that covers all of the drives.

Just curious on the drive letters, never seen one all the way to L. As I stated try another original and see if it makes a difference, it does sound like a bad disk at this time.

Further to my post of 11/10/2005, just to let you know that I've got hold of another original disc and will try and rip it with Decrypter before running it through DVD Rebuilder.
Thanks again for all your help and suggestions - it's appreciated.

Hi gasking
Thanks for your message - I am pleased to make your acquaintance here on Afterdawn.
In answer to your question, yes this is a Bollywood (Indian DVD).
I was able to make this particular one work by getting hold of another original copy of the disc and re-ripping it again with the latest version of DVD Decrypter - 3.5.4.0.
You can get it from here if you don't already have it:-
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_...
Which movie(s) are you having trouble trying to copy/rip?
What program(s) are you using?
How do you copy your movies and what media (discs) do you use to do so?
Please also give me your system/PC specs so that I can see what you have will be/is enough for DVD burning.
Please let me know accordingly - I look forward to hearing from you in due course.
Regards

Thanks for the prompt response happy37. I used to use DVD X copy Platinum RF with no problem. I started having trouble with some of the newer bollywood DVDs I was getting. Specifically, NO ENTRY, MAINE PYAR.. (MPKK) and most recently barsat. It also is more so with Eros DVDs. I was getting suspicious that they may be using some extra bit or faster rate to fool these programs. I was not able to rip Barsat today on anything including DVD Decrypter, isobuster, DVD XCopy, and DVD Shrink. It stop at 65% on all. When I play the movie it plays until 65% and then moves jerkely for about a minute and then corrects itself and plays on. It leads me to believe if the Eros guys have developed some unique method that fools the programs but does not fool the player. Your thoughts

My system is a state of the art Pentium 4 3.00 GHz with 512 RAM and Windows XP Pro SP2. Plextor 12X DVD writer and Verbatim disks. The disks are no problem as they have worked beautifully with 99% of my burns- the problem is not with the burn. It occurs before when the programs are reading the movies. The BArsat DVD had no visible scratches or smudges. so also with MPKK. I actually got a newer original of MPKK and it stopped at the same place. SO something is being done on these newer bollywood DVDs- Maybe the Indians are a step ahead of Hollywood.

Hi again gasking
Many thanks also for your prompt response.
Seems to me that you've also got the usual set of programs like myself: -
DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and DVD X Copy Platinum
Have you tried the trial versions of Clone DVD 2 and AnyDVD?
The AnyDVD is a driver that will sit in the background of your system tray where it will work on taking out all the encryptions and other codes that make up the protection on a DVD.
You can download a 21-day trial of AnyDVD from here: -
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/anyd...
or
http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
If that trial works, it's up to you if you want to buy it.
AnyDVD has definitely worked for me on all of the Bollywood DVD's that I own, yet I have recently decided to go down the Dual Layer route and burn a lot of my movies to Dual Layer discs as I found that I wasn't happy with the quality of the above programs.
I simply use DVD Decrypter in ISO Read/ISO Write modes to rip and burn my movies to a DVD+R DL Verbatim disc and it works flawlessly.
As you probably may have heard and know, DVD X Copy Platinum RF is longer being updated since 321 Studios has since gone out of business so your best bet is to use AnyDVD together with X Copy RF to try and copy the newer discs such as No Entry and Barsaat.
I have successfully copied Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya (a Spark DVD, not Eros) using DVD Decrypter onto a Dual Layer disc with no problems and have also previously used AnyDVD and DVD X Copy RF to do just the movie only using the Advanced mode of the program onto a Single Layer DVD+RW Verbatim disc.
Quote:-
" It leads me to believe if the Eros guys have developed some unique method that fools the programs but does not fool the player. "
and
" SO something is being done on these newer bollywood DVDs- Maybe the Indians are a step ahead of Hollywood. "
I do not personally think (this is just my opinion) that the Eros guys have done anything that fools the programs and not the player as most of the Bollywood DVD's are NOT encrypted and the ones that are are only encrypted with CSS/CPPM and the CSS/CPPM can be broken by using DVD Decrypter and ripping to the hard drive and then using the program of your choice to shrink and burn the finished product to DVD.
I don't think either that the Indians are a step ahead of Hollywood.
Your system specs are indeed fine - please also make sure that you do also close down all unnecessary running programs in the background before carrying out any burning tasks by using Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then closing down all the programs that you don't need to use.
Prior to ?decrypt or rip? your original movie, take a few seconds to check the few following settings on DVD Decrypter
** open up DVD Decrypter, go to "Tools", and "Settings"
** at General ?Removal Method? arrow down to ?Aggressive?
** at I/O check ?Ignore Read Errors?
** at CSS check ?Brute Force -> I/O key exchange
** "On Failure:" use key from another file [YES]
** at ISO Write Mode, check ?Enable BURN-Proof"
I really hope that this information is of some use to you - please do come back here on Afterdawn and let me know how you get on and then I will try and help you further.
Good luck and regards
Happy37

Hi Happy37,
Bad news. I ran out and got another original of Barsaat and then used all the settings of DVD Decrypter above. It failed at exactly the same point i.e. 66%. DVD X Copy failed at 68%. This was exactly as before on the previous original. In the meantime, the new Shahrukh Khan DVD worked fine on both programs, i.e. DVD X copy and DVD Decrypter. The error message on DVD Decrypter was as follows:

So, it is extremely unlikely that 2 originals would fail at the same point unless it is a defect that points to a general problem with the originals- inserted at the same point during manufacture. On the player, the movie becomes jerky at this point and stops. You have to go to the next chapter to continue- on both originals.
