Hi:
I am looking for pointers on how to rip DVD movies (commercial) and convert them to mpeg4 so I can view them on my Clie via the memory stick. I have used DVD decrypter to identify and rip the .vob files, and then used 3GP to create what I thought would be a mpeg4 but no joy.
When transferred to the memory stick the clie does not see them. When I try to play them on the PC using quicktime (which to my knowledge and play mpeg4 files), it also complains...something about not being in a proper format.
I also have nero Ultra 6.6 and am wondering if Recode would do the job?

Any help would be appreciated...
John

Recode can do what you want. Either ASP or AVC for video and AAC audio in an mp4 container. You would need to check exactly what your clie supports first. Also just because QT complains about something doesn't mean too much since its mp4 support is crap. For instance it won't play an mp4 containing ASP MPEG-4 video using bframes. It won't play an mp4 containing mp3 audio. It doesn't support HP AVC, etc.

Hey, Thank you. I do have a follow up question. What settings should I use on DVD Decrypter so the .VOB files are formatted correctly for Nero? Specifically, in DVD Decrypter should I use File, IFO or ISO mode? should I enable stream processing? if so, should I select only one video stream and one audio stream? (btw, what is the diff between 0x81 ac3/2ch/Eng and 0x82 ac3/2ch/Eng audio tracks?)
How do I find out what file format my UX-50 supports? All I've found so far is 'mpeg' and 'moviemaker' formats
Thanks

File or IFO mode should work. Stream processing would save space.
0x81 ac3/2ch/Eng and 0x82 ac3/2ch/Eng one is most likely commentary.

mpeg suggests MPEG1/2, moviemaker suggests wmv.

Actually, I found out later...that mpeg for the clie is mpeg4. I tried both modes and stream processing. In both cases, playing back with Nero show a pixilated images (.25"x.25" squares) that had very jerky playback. In many frames, there were 'square holes' where the image was black. The audio was unintelligable. So, any suggestions on how to help this? ALso, the .mpeg4 file out of recode was 2.6 GB. While that is definitely smaller that the DVD, it won't fit on my 1 GB mem stick. Will using something like DVD Shrink help?
TIA
John

DVD Shrink is an MPEG-2 transcoder, it doesn't work with MPEG-4. Much better to just encode once with the correct bitrate than encode, then transcode anyway.

The official extension for the official MPEG-4 container is .mp4. This is what Recode should output.

If your device can play .3gp file, I recommend you use 3gp converter. It will converte DVD movie (vob,AVI...) to 3GP with high speed and high quality. My mobile phone can play any 3gp movie converted by 3GP converter. enjoy:
