the only way to tell is by putting the disc in your pc, right clicking and going to properties and looking at the size. DVD5 are usualy 4.3GB or smaller. verbatim is not software it's a brand of media. I don't fully understand your last question so i'll leave it to that.
Like above you can tell if the original is dual layer
(DVD9) by the size. Anything above 4.7GB is dual layer
The sony blank DVD's may work just fine for you
only way to know for sure is to try them.
You shoud at least know if they are +R or -R and if they are
single layer DVD's as that should be written right on them
Dual layer DVD's are much much more expensive.
There are not too many DVD9 games out there, and if you put in the original and open up DVD Decrypter it will tell you also how many layers the disc has.
But unless you have a good mod chip i would not worry about how to copy them as you will not be able to play it anyway.
Swap magic can not play DVD9
Just a side note here, to check if the game is a DVD9 or DVD5:
- insert original game into your dvd burner
- wait until it's completed loading
- now click on your dvd burner and click on Properties, now it should show you how big is the game.
@thensley,
What version is your PS2 sonsole? Basically, if you use high quality such as genuine Taiyo Yuden (authentic Yuden is also the 8X DVD+R Fuji & Sony "Made In Japan"), Verbatim (MCC003 & MCC004), Maxell "Made In Japan", TDK (DVD-R) and the Ritek then you should be fine. Honestly, I prefer Taiyo Yuden, however, the choice is yours.

My wife and I are going to my Neurologist tomorrow and I wanted to pick-up the correct DVD as I will be using it for coping movies. I have a ton of movies here and want to back them up. I'm brand new at this and will be getting my burner tomorrow also. I have a MicroCenter near where I live, they have everything but the kitchen sink. That's all an well, but if I don't know what I'm going after, I might as well buy a kitchen sink. I need your help. Like I said, I'm completely NEW at this and need all you guys help. While I'm thinking about it, where do I start first. I guess everyone is laughing, I guess I do sound bad off. Oh, well, have to start somewhere. Thanks!
1. a start would be getting a good DVD burner, which i
see you are planning one. (I like the Sony DRU series)
the DRU-800A was on sale at Circuit City, and after rebates
($10 instant, $30 mail in) it would be $69.99
2. Next would be some quality DVD's. Doing movies should
be pretty easy as they are not nearly as picky about media
as games are.
TDK,Verbatim,Philips,Ritek G04, Taiyo Yuden
I prefer the 8X DVD-R for games and 8X DVD+R for movies
3. a good program to use to burn them would be the next step
DVD Shrink is a good one to use and is free.
For better quality you can buy a set of programs that i can
tell you will make it a true breeze. CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD by
Slysoft. I have these and they are top notch and very easy to use.
Before you buy media make sure you check the guide to your
DVD player for the media format (+R or -R) that it is compatible
with.If it is a PS2 and above a version 4 then go with +R for movies
and you will be fine.
You can get a guide on using DVD Shrink here:
