I have heard that you can buy an external hard drive, and connect it to your ps2 using the USB ports and load with HD Advanced/USB-Extreme. Is this true? If so is maxtor a good brand to use for this? And would i need HD Advanced or USB-Extreme? Are these easy to learn and use?

Yep you can do that :)

Since you are talking about buyinh a external hard drive you will need USB Extreme in order to boot it, hdadvance is for IDE hdds so i don't think that would be of any use to you. Playing games from a hdd is very very easy and takes no time to get the hang of it but you will run into problems now and again mainly to do with DVD9 games but most other DVD5 games work fine, Maxtor is a good make as is Seagate so either Maxtor or Seagate will be fine, you can find a list of hdds that work on the hdadvance (makers of USB Extreme) website:

http://www.hdadvance.com/index.htm

Can i recommend if you have the older Ps2 that you get a IDE hdd as they are faster than USB ones and you can download a free hdloader if you have a method of booting (swap magic) which are more compatible with DVD9/DVD5 games.

I have looked at USB extreme and the only thing i saw was bad comments of people saying nothing is compatible. Is this that bad of a buy?

Personally i would avoid it, it loads games at the exact same speed as the Ps2 does from the disk so there's not much point in it apart from the fact your keeping your games in good condition, do you have a normal Ps2 or the slim Ps2?

As far as i know it does, you can find out what version it is by either looking at this site http://www.psxservices.co.uk/ps2_version.htm or you can load the Ps2 up without any Cd's/DVDs in the drive and go to the black browser screen were it says Browser & System Configuration, if you press triangle you will see "Console" and next to it there should be something like SCPH-xxxxx

Yes you will need a Network Adaptor if you want to use an IDE hdd, all it does is supply power to the hdd and let the Ps2 read it.

Is this external IDE hdd or internal? Can you put a bigger internal HD in the console?
