Curious about Blockbuster

Ok so lets say I own this DVD and it got scratched like all hell and doesnt read anymore. I would like to go to Blockbuster, rent the movie that I own, but is no longer playable, and burn it so that I may continue to watch it. I have the programs DVD Decrypter, Alcohol 120% and Nero, and possess DVD-R (minus) discs. I would like to know what the best way to go about this is, and whether or not to worry about that thin metal wire on the dvd-top. Thanks a lot.

why don't you just switch discs? ;) they go by the barcode on the dvd case, not on anything on the dvd itself. of course, you could copy those BB discs without a problem too.

If you copy Blockbuster discs, will people working there somehow know? Has anyone tried it without any consequences?

They never knew when someone brought a cassette back unrewound unless you complain, don't worry.
A DVD is an inert piece of plastic. There is nothing 'done' to it during playing it on your PC that will change it. Backup with impunity.
I'm assuming the metal wire you're referring to is the theft prevention tag? That just sets off the alarm lights in the store if you try and physically move one of them between the goalposts you walk thru when you enter the store. That's why they hand you your movies AROUND it. It has nothing to do with ratting out what you did with that disc in your home.

As for L3373LF's question:
Will they know? Maybe, if you rent 3-5 movies at a time and return them 2 hours later, and do that every day. The important thing is, will they care? Why should the guy behind the counter making $7 an hour give a crap if you're copying movies? Doesn't affect his paycheck. If anything, they make MORE off people that copy. You know anyone who watches 50 films a month?
Back when cd burners were $300 and discs were $3 apiece, I'd rent Playstation 1 games and bring them back in like 2 hours. If they asked, I'd tell them I just needed to copy it. No one there ever gave a crap.

An even cheaper way to rent movies is to use blockbuster.com. You get 3 movies at a time +2 free brick and morter rentals per month for $14.99. It averages out to 3 movies a week 12 a month. Thats alot cheaper than $4.99 per rental and bb.com has about 10 times the amount the store has. No fees for mailing or even using your envelopes they give you everything.

I agree with megabyte2. I use BB on-line and I have only had a couple of problems (different dvd inside the sleeve than what is listed on the sleeve). Their turn-around is pretty quick, but the price has recently gone up to $17.99 (I think).

I just took Netflix for a spin for their 2-week trial. $17.99 a month for unlimited DVD's. In two weeks I managed to get 12 movies. So 24 a month is feasible, and a good deal. But, I'm in California, and they have a distribution center pretty close to me, so your mileaga may vary.

I've been renting movies from blockbuster for years and finally got the movie pass last year and they don't give me shit every time I return the movies after backing them up. like one of the guys said earlier, they make more money off of us renting them anyways. I couldn't believe the way the Cowboys were playing. Tell me why they couldn't score a TD last week with a 1st. and goal at the Raiders 4 yard line, or why couldn't they at least cover Santana Moss at least once in the last 2 minutes of a game?
Sorry for the off-post, but I've been a Cowboys fan since they started.

I used to be with netflix but their deal isnt as good as blockbuster.com (bb.com gives you 2 free rentals per month in the traditional store + a free used movie about every 3 months) I use the 2 free traditional for tuesday releases which with .com's it takes 1 to 2 days to get the tuesday releases. This way I get all the benifits of a drive up rental place with the low cost and selection of a .com rental. Give BB.com a chance its a better deal.

The first month that I had blockbuster online - I got 40 movies burned. Not bad for the first month price of $9.99.
...there's no way to tell that someone's burned a movie. And the blockbuster people (in the stores) don't care. There was one guy up there who had a modded xbox and he'd let me just take a game home for 10 minutes to upload it to my xbox hard drive. I'd come back and return it - no fee.

1st thing we shouldn't even be talking about renting and burning DVD's
As far as Renting and Burning a Movie that you already own because yours is scratched to hell that would still be considered legal because you own the movie (even though it's scratch to hell you still own it)
Renting Movies or Games just to copy them is illegal and shouldn't be talked about in the threads
Read the rules people and some of you should know better on how you wording your ?'s

to ask ?'s about Legally backing up your Movies or Games
It states clearing in the rule and you should've read them that there is no talk of piracy and going to the video store and renting movies or games just to copy them is Piracy..
Now if you Own the game or Movie and yours is damaged and you need to rent a copy to back it up that is fine because you still technically own the movie and you need a backup copy...
Now if you back up a copy you do own and sell the original that's still piracy because you sold the original and gave up your rights to the material.. Same goes with backing up games or movies for friends
It's "BACKING UP" for your Private use only... Backing up and copying (Stealing) ar two different things...

Ok now lets be honest... What do you think the percentage of people who to come to afterdawn.com and want to know how to legally back up their own movies? Maybe 10 percent? Now that is fine and legally backing up your dvd's is great. But the majority are not. I mean lets ask another question? Why does netflix.com exist...can you really watch 3-8 movies that quickly?? Most people copy the disks. I am not condoning it or saying its right, I am just speaking the truth. I think the real crooks are the hollywood ceo's who expect to charge us 10.00 a person to watch a movie at the movies...or 20.00 for a over bloated dvd....

Doesn't matter that it's done just matters that it's a rule and it shouldn't be brought out in the open as if piracy is no big deal..
That's all we need is someone comin in here and login all the messages and saying hey this site is all about piracy lets tear it down.. when the smart thing for us users to do is watch how we word our ?'s
the original post was ok.. He wanted to know since he owned the movie and his copy was scratched to hell and back if it was ok for him to just rent the same movie and back it up.. Legally the answer is yes so no problem because he owns it... It's when it gets into the convo of well I get a pass and go to BB and rent 2 or 3 times a day bla bla bla and I use Netflix to get my movies that I copy.. Well that crap is just going to get this whole Site in trouble.. and it's in the rules
So what I'm really trying to say and yes you're right it's a given that that's what most people are hear for but you have to watch what you say..
If you want to "BACKUP" Amityville Horrow just say you're having problem with it... Don't say I d/l'd it off the net and I need to convert it or I rented it from BB or Netflix and I need to "BACKUP"

get to the point I have this movie and I need help backing it up..
We don't need to know the illegal end of it...
and for someone who is a SENIOR MEMBER you should know better

So what your saying is that it is ok to look for help in pirating things just don't say exactly what you are doing? Like do it under the old "backing up" code name? Come on now. The problem with afterdawn is that is becoming a debating society. I no debator nor do i care what you believe or want to believe. I was just stating a fact. Oh and by the way, you can't copy another disk if you own it becuase it is simply broken, you have to but another one if we want to get really into the legaliez of the issue. Some countries its actually illegal just to break the encryption. What would you do if you copy another disk then throw your bad copy out? Are you going to hold on to it? Come on now. Lets play nice.

You can state things however you want.. If you get banned it's your own fault and yes breaking the code is still illegal but I think a Movie co would understand more why you did it if you actually owned a copy of the movie rather then just renting it and the movie co getting nothing out of you from the get go...
but I'm just stating the rules of the forums
