different brands use different manufacturers to produce their media that they sell in retail stores, so, often times you need to do some research ahead of time before going out there and picking up just any spindle of media, regardless of brand...
for example, the Fuji and Sony brands in the 8x DVD+R format, IF you find the ones "made in japan" will be Taiyo Yuden manufactured (YUDEN000T02 coding) when you get home to test them out through a dvd identifyer program~ :)
and at least the Fuji 8x DVD-R format, when "made in japan" is another Taiyo Yuden manufactured media, with the TYGO2 coding, another genuine TY code~ :)
so, if you know what you are looking for ahead of time, then you should be ok...another example: Fuji 8x DVD-R "made in taiwan" will be a Prodisc coded disc, NOT SO GOOD in my opinion, nothing near the quality of the "made in japan" TY under the same brand label~ :)
there are PLENTY of "made in taiwan" media that are VERY VERY good quality, Verbatim 8x/16x dvd-r/dvd+r readily come to mind...made in taiwan predominantly...also, from the other brands out there, maxell and office depot brand specifically, you will get the Ritek coded media if you see the "made in taiwan" on the label...i actually really like the Ritek G05 coded ones, which are the 8x DVD-R, a LOT of success for ME on those.
but, there is no "best DVD-R brand", it really depends on WHO manufacturers them, branding on media means absolutely NOTHING, when all is said and done, i would PERSONALLY suggest sticking with TAIYO YUDEN manufactured media, regardless of what "brand" you find them in, just know that TYs are some of THE BEST media out there, very few people can/will dispute THAT~ :) and NO, 16x is NOT always better, at least w/ TYs...i personally feel the quality is BETTER on the 4x DVD-R and 8x dvd-r/dvd+r media than the 16x speed~ besides, you don't want to burn @16x ANYWAYS, so, what's the point? you will be just fine using the 4x/8x media in either format...16x is just a marketing thing where newbies think that "it's rated faster, therefor, it MUST be better"...DEFINITELY NOT TRUE~
hope that helps

Very good explanation on media kivory, So basically its not good to burn at 16x but ok at 8x? Ive read many posts that say to burn only at 4x and was wondering myself if it would be ok to burn any faster or does burning faster then 4x just decrease the quality even at 8x?

hi nick,
well, there are a few things to take into consideration before burning faster than @4x, MOST members here will recommend you ONLY burn @ 4x or slower, this is TRUE; this has been one of the ways to keep your burn errors to a minimum and speeding up the burn will only INCREASE the likelihood of your getting errors.
but, i personally burn ALL my 8x rated media @8x with flawless results, while i do not recommend doing this, i have found at least on my OWN SETUP, this is the best way to do it...i have ran tests here at home between my 4x speed burns and my 8x speed burns and the quality score was actually SLIGHTLY higher on my 8x burn than my 4x, while this may be a fluke or an accident of nature, i am CONFIDENT in my setup/hardware/Taiyo Yudens whenever i burn, so, that's why I keep my burns on 8x rated media @8x, will i tell everyone to speed up their burns to 8x to be like me, DEFINITELY NOT~! :)
if you are referring to "overburning" your media..meaning, your drive and your firmware will ALLOW you to burn 4x rated media at say 6x or 8x, or 8x rated media @ 12x or 16x; DEFINITELY DO NOT overburn as the chances of you producing coasters/many errors on the disc are very HIGH~ my pioneer allows me to "overburn" my 4x @8x, and my 8x @16x, but, i have my burn SET @ 8x for my 8x media and even @8x for my 16x rated media...on my 4x media, i just use my trusty Sony as even though my firmware is updated to the latest, on these 4x DVD-R TYG01s, it will only allow me to burn @4x, so i keep it at THAT predetermined speed :)
hope that clarifies a bit for you, i have just found in the past that when i burned @16x (regardless of on 8x rated media overburn or 16x rated media @ max speed), the errors were significantly higher than when i burned @4x or @8x on said media...but, everyone's setup is different, i just use what has worked for thousands of backups for ME, but i still recommend to people to keep the burn speed @4x even on GOOD quality media such as Taiyo Yuden/Verbatims; just don't want to argue with people that followed my lead and burn @8x and FOR THEM, they got a coaster...i'm not gonna say, "i told you so...", i have fine tuned my setup and it does EXACTLY what i want it to do now, but, what works for ME, might not work for someone else and vice versa...
good luck~
