Just got my Epson R200 a couple days ago and whenever i print onto inkjet printable (have tryed maxell and verbatim) I get like little lines in black area's.

Ive done the nozzle check and its perfect and also did the print head alignment but on that the black has lines just like the ones on the dvds but the 4th one on the test pattern is the worst.

Ive ran that alignment program over 10 times hitting realign and it doesn't seem to do anything. I can only notice the lines on the inkjet printables and i have the settings on the best quality and dvd/cd printable premium and have also tryed just the regular. Any ideas? Thanks

Not sure exactly what the problem is, but I also had this problem with my old printer (an HP 812C). Finally decided to get rid of the printer in favor of the R200. I'm hoping that this isn't a common problem and that someone out there knows how to fix it. Any suggestions??

Are you using Windows XP? If so, do you have service pack 2 installed? I use my laptop to print from my R200 (its my lovely little media station, I'm so proud of it *sniffle*) but at first I had Windows XP with SP2 running on it. I had the exact same problem myself... and my pictures came out darker for some reason. Come to find out that Epson R200 print drivers do not work well with SP2 by itself. Epson has a driveer update on thier website that fixes the problem.

Uninstall your Epson software and drivers, reinstall with tne updated drivers, then do a test print. You should be ok after that. Let us know how it goes eh? :)

Great stuff nick, and as you've just shown... sometimes its just simply the machine that needs replacing lol :)

I must say I have the problem with EPSON R200 with printing on dvd when you touched is smugged but after I exchange to EPSON 300 I dont have the problem no more.

I must admit, I've never had the smudging problem with my R200. Once the DVD is done printing, I just leave it for about 5 minutes and its dry as a bone. Go fig :)

I wish Epson would come out with an All-in-one printer that does cd/dvds. I would love to have a cd printer, but don't have the space for 2 printers. I frequently use my copier, and am not willing to give it up.

BTW: Do you scan the original discs or download from the internet? Which gives better quality? I would assume the downloaded are scanned to begin with?

I scan the original disk with a paperport scanner at 600DPI.
very hard to tell the difference between the original and the disk i print.the 800 is a great product.

I've heard its a great printer, but at 400 US, its abit rich for my blood. I think I'll go with the R340 myself... the 8 color ink cartridge system in the R800 sounds nice but the 6 ink in the R340 will suffice for my needs. Thanks for the heads up though, I have customers who would be interested in that one.

I'm looking at buying a Epson R200 because I need to do about 200 disks in a short period of time but don't want to lay out any money either. The R200 looks like the best for the money but I read all over the place that the tray can be a real pain at times. The best deal I can find is the R200 for $79 + a $20 rebate for a refurbished one direct from Epson (w/ 1 yr warranty). The I see they have the R300 for only $20 more (again, w/ rebate).

My question is .... I find all kinds of stuff about the R200 tray problems but nothing about the R300 having problems. Am I wrong? I would guess that the same problems occur with the R300 but maybe they just sold like a bazillion more R200's and that is why I find more about the tray problem on that one. Should I upgrade to the R300 because the tray is better or not? THANKS

Pam: Im not sure if the R300 has the same problem but ive heard that the R200 and R300 share the same components the R300 just has some added things. from what ive heard the R200 tray can either be fixed by taking the plastic piece off the front of the tray or geting a new one from epson, When the tray fails it just means its worn out i beleave. You should be good for the 200 discs. Sams Club has the R200 new for about $70 with a $20 rebate.

Just make sure the tray is kept clean and such. Over a short period of time it can become dusty and scuffed abit, so taking a minute or two every couple weeks to just clean it off will help in a big way. I love my R200, it does such a great job but alas I will soon be retiring it for the might R340 that should be in stores now... and come to think, I used to hate Epson products lol

Of course now that they've dropped the curse of "Suck Harder Than A Black Hole", I love 'em! Yay Epson!

EDIT: I believe the R300 series does have a slightly stronger pulling action when it brings the tray into pre-print alignment. That inital tug is what gets everything else going. The R300 series isn't a bad way to go to be perfectly honest.

Not too happy with Epson right now personally. First bought the r300 refurbed (first mistake), spent hours trying to get the inkjet heads working right (clogged), then found the rollers were so loose it wouldn't pull in the cd tray without assistance. Printed way off one side, I adjusted the settings, and it still printed in the same spot. Tried a radically moved setting; still no change. Gave up and bought brand new r320; printed 28 cd's before it started leaving ink splatters on rollers & discs (and no amount of cleaning helped; it would just do it again on the next disc), and about the same time, 25 - 27 discs in, the rollers on the new one were loosening enough I am seeing the tray hesitate and pause before it completely discharges it. Brand new machine, out of the box and running less than 4 hours, printing a mere 27 cd's plus a few sheets of test patterns, and the darned thing acts like it's wearing out. I've got 5 different combination inkjet/deskjet printers and 2 laserjet printers, all HP, and even the little deskjet that's 12 years old & ran many thousands of pages still prints as clean and troublefree as the day I bought it.

Am trying to find help from Epson on what looks to be an inherent product flaw, but so far not getting anywhere.

P.S. If your having trouble with the tray starting into the printer you can manually aid the tray going in if it's sliding, and once the machine has a grip it calculates the positioning by reading the position of the small white blocks and square holes on the tray. Leave the lid open during this process so you can see when the back end of the tray reaches the rear roller bar; that's when it will start to grab on it's own. Not suggesting you start doing this all the time, but it does overcome the weak front roller problem if you have to find a way to make it work.

So far no problems with my R200. Maybe I'm just lucky with technology that way hehe

Update: Spoke with Epson this morning, and without hesitation they chose to send out a new printer and a prepaid return shipping label for the troubled one. While it doesn't mean the new one may not be any better, I was very pleased with the quick efforts to make things right, and the helpful assistance I received from their representative.
