I just picked up a sony external DRX-720ul for my laptop. I am using DVD43 and nero 6.0 to back up my dvds. Everything indicates like it is burning fine(dvd43 and nero but usally 10 to 30 minutes into the burn it fails and i cant seem to find a log. The drive copies burned dvds fine and will burn data dvds just fine but ruins four out of five dvd discs when i try to make a first copy

Besides to what borhand9 had mentioned, you may want to update your Nero 6 to the latest 6.6.0.16 if you can. In addition, you'll need to update your Sony DRX-720UL burner's firmware if there is any available. Even if you've recently just bought your burner, its firmware may be out-of-dated. Go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php and look for your buner's firmware. Updating firmware can be very useful because it will be more compatible with other media and reads the media codes better.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

Arrrgh....can't get any worse media than these. Go with the aforementioned TY's, as I use, or Verbatim's.

Sony DRU-710A (BYX4)
DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter.
TYG02;YUDEN002;MCC blanks.
Favorite Media: Sony 8x+R(MADE IN JAPAN)

Laptop: 1.4 Ghz;256k ram; 40 gig HD;Windows XP

if you can't find Ty's or Verbatims and they are out of your price range then look for MADE IN JAPAN on the Label of TDK, FUJI FILMS, MAXELL, & & SONY (I'm sure there are more manufactures than that but I can't think of anyone else at the moment)

If you look for MADE IN JAPAN you can't go wrong

To follow up the last post, if you want good media now, the best price I have found this week is the Staples Online sale of Sony 50x 4.7 +R for $18 (that's only $.36 a piece for TY's). It doesn't get much better than that.

128 Successful Burns on TY's (128 attempts)
