Yes, so far I have made 3 DVD coasters, and 2 successful ones.
I was making a backup of a backup game.

I am using Verbatim 8x DVD -R.

I use Nero, and also DVDencrypter.

I have noticed, so far, the games that are faulty were burned at 2X speed.
And all the successful ones (2 of them) were burnt at 4X.

My PS2 is ver. 7.

So what do you think, is it that:
- My PS2 doesn't really like Verbatim DVDs, therefore sometimes it works sometimes not.
- Or My PS2 only likes DVD burnt at 4X, not 2X?

Which one do you think is more likely the cause?

Thanks.

Verbatim DVD's are widely used and many people like them.
They may have different quality DVD's out there under the
Verbatim name, not sure. I always use Philips 8X DVD-R and
when i can't get those i get TDK
They work great on my V7
I always burn 8X DVD's at 4X that is the speed that
I seem to get best results.
What games are you having a problem with? Just in case it
is one that may need rebuilding or something so you don't waste
any more DVD's

Actually this is my 1st attempt (just got my PS2 chipped with DMS4 Lite yesterday).

I think the problem might be the speed I use.
What happened was, I borrowed some games from my friend, and tried to copy them.

I got Dynasty Warrior 4, the 1st time I burned them (2X speed), it burned successfully, but when I put them in to my PS2, it didn't boot, only showed black screen.

Then I made another copy, burned it at 4X speed, and this time I could play it like normal.

Same thing also happened with Ghost Hunter. Same methods, same Verbatim DVDs. With 2X speed, it showed black screen again. Then I re-copy it with 4X speed, worked fine.

I think the problem was probably that the PS2 doesn't like games burned below 4X? If so, then I'd better stick with 4X speed from now on.

It's not a big deal really. What I am more concerned is, the complexity of burning Dual layer games. GT4 and God of War are probably under my "must play" list of games.
My friend got a copy, non dual layer version of them, but I assume that means that it's somewhere, somehow "chopped" (eg. some movies are deleted in order to fit the space).

I am thinking about to make an "exact" copy using the dual layer media, but the complicated process sort of discourage me to do so.
Because I believe for GT4 and such, I can't just do a straight copy DVD? (even though I got a ver. 1.3 toxic?)

if its is an 8X DVD -/+ R Then burn at 4X
if it is a 4X DVD -/+R then burn at 2X for best results

with a DMS4 chip you should be able to back up
and play a dual layer with no more effort than a normal
single layer. That is if your burner can do dual layer
media. DVD Decrypter will copy dual layer too.
And the chip will play it as long as you have the latest
flash release for it (ToxicBIOS V1.3 in your case)
It is just the cost of those dual layer blanks that stops me.
They are like $10 a pop.
The things that are usually cut out of dual layer when they are
cut down to DVD5 are extra movies and such. Nothing most people
would even miss.

Thanks for the input steimy.

Yeah, I have a dual layer writer DVD drive, and one normal DVD drive (read only). Also got the latest Toxic (1.3) running on my chip.

Yeah, I understand you, Dual layer media isn't cheap, 8-10 bucks each here. That's why I hope I won't be getting errors or I will bust my wallet. :)

But I really don't have much experience in burning yet.
Can you recommend me (based from my situation), what method is the easiest to make a copy of GT4 ?

They said I can just do straight copy, so which software is the easiest one to use ?
I have DVD Decrypter but a bit confused, because some people said I need to burn the ISO, but some people said something else.

I also have Nero. But should I just use Alcohol 120% and just burn like normal?

One more thing, they recommend me to use a DL +R for GT4 for my ver.7 PS2. Just wanna double check whether that's the correct DVD media format...

Thanks a lot for your help !

I forgot to mention, my Decrypter is ver. 3.5.4.0
So say if I use Decrypter, after I read the ISO file of GT4, which one should I burn? The ISO ?

And when you mention extra movies that are left out when people copying DVD9 into DVD5, did you mean like extra movies that are not part of the game (eg. for other game previews, making of, etc.) not the actual movie cutscene of the game?

actual cutscenes or unlockable movies and other
stuff that really doesn't effect the gameplay much.
I have not done any dual layer yet myself
But DVD+R DL should work
and with DVD Decrypter you get an MDS and ISO file
you burn the MDS file. This is a file like a Cue. file with
CD games. It tells the burning progam how and where to burn the
ISO. I have never tried burning the ISO file with DVD Decrypter
some people say that is what they do and it works.
My DVD Decrypter tells me i chose the wrong file and picks
the MDS file anyway when i tried that when i first started using
it. So i just stuck with burning the MDS file since it always worked
I would get the burning of regular single layer DVD5 games
down until all of them work when you burn them, once you have that
then i would move on to DVD9. Don't want to waste a lot of
money on media until you get the process and media you
burner and PS2 like down.

Not all PS2 likes the same media and format. Some will read/play better on Verbatim, but some PS2 are pretty picky. I have a PS2 version 9 and even if my PS2 can read/play both formats (DVD-R/DVD+R) easily, I still prefer the 8X DVD+R Taiyo Yuden (Fuji 8X DVD+R Made In Japan) and the 8X DVD+R Maxell "Made In Japan" better.

Top notch media are genuine Taiyo Yuden (including both Fuji & Sony 8X DVD+R Made In Japan), Maxell (made in japan), TDK (only the DVD-R can be trusted), Verbatim and Ritek.

Try cleaning your PS2 lense with a QTip with alcohol to see if that'll help. Additionally, if you're going to backup in a DVD+R, then it's best to change the "book type" from a DVD+R to a DVD-ROM format. Yes... DVD-ROM is the universal format for all commercial (original) PS2 games and DVD movies. Therefore, all original PS2 games and DVD movies can play in your PS2 console easily.

NOTE: you must make sure that your dvd burner is capable of changing the book type or bitsetting though. Book type changing can be done by using both DVD Decrypter or Nero.

lol...

Steimy's advice to get familiar with DVD5 first before jumping to DVD9 was a bit too late.

I just rented the game (it's a one day rent) and bought 2 Verbatim DL +R.

Gonna try it later today, and I'll let you know how it goes...

Wish me luck ! :)

Crap!

When I used DVD Decrypter and did ISO READ, it only read until 14% and then it stopped and showed error message.

I tried reading on my other DVD drive, same thing happened.

I also tried using Nero, and it also stopped reading (imaging) at 14%.

Why? Is it because the GT4 DVD is scratched or something? But I can't see any major scratches on the DVD surface though...

Anyone had this problem? I will try to change to another copy of the game, and see what will happen...

Another update...
I swapped into another GT4. And this time I could copy the ISO successfully into my hard drive.
So at least this is good for someone who might have similar problem as me to know.

Right now, I am writing it to the dual layer using dvd Dec. (forgot to change to DVD Rom setting as alcohol mentioned though, hope it's ok).

I'll tell you if it works.

Update.

1st coaster of DL DVD. Great. lol.

What happened was, after I successfully create an ISO of GT4 in the hard drive, then I chose ISO-->write, max speed 1.
Then it burned like normal, but when I put in the PS2, it just made a whirring sound, and didn't boot.
Then I put the copied DVD back to PC, and it actually recognised it as "blank media", and funny thing, this time, using that so-called "blank media", I tried to burn it once again using Nero, and it still allowed to burn, but after it finished, I can't even access the burned DVD from my PC. So I guess I successfully toasted this one.

Anyway, since I already got the ISO in my hard drive, now I think it's the matter of burning it correctly?
I still have 1 more DL DVD left. So I better get it right this time. By the way, the Verbatim DL DVD has speed of 2.4 only. Is this normal for DVD DL speed?

I can't do lower than that, the burner only let me burn at that 2.4 speed.

And when using Nero, this is the step I use:
Select Burn data disc, then I locate and open the GT4 ISO file, and then burn that one.

Is that correct?

Thanks.

Woohoo ! second DVD DL coasters.

This time, I used Nero, under option burn files, I used "Burn data disc", and chose the GT4 ISO file (the big one).

The burn was completed at 2.4X speed. (the only speed I could choose).

But strange thing, after it finished burning, my DVD drive can't recognise the DVD but labeled it as "blank writeable media" instead.

What did I do wrong??

Okay, how about this:

Since I have 2 DVD drives (one is DVD writer, one is DVD reader only), can I just use a method of direct burn/burn on a go (without creating image file)?

So, the GT4 will be on DVD rom, and then I will burn in directly using the DL DVD in the DVD writer.

burning on the fly is not reccomended
Not for the best results. I have not used Nero much
myself but i thought with games you would use the'"Burn Image" feature, not the data disc. You are not backing up data
but are copying a discs image.
Hopefully someone who uses Nero to burn games can confirm that.
I like DVD Decrypter much better.

With DVD Decrypter, I managed to read the GT4 DVD and have 2 files into my hard drive. one is the MDS file, and the other is the ISO file.
So looking at the 2 files, I can assume that the read was successfully done right?

But why when I burn them to my DL DVD, the result was not there? It's suppose to be easy from that point afterwards...

Yes, you should just be able to take the MDS file
Do Mode->ISO->Write and copy it to DVD

@djmocok,

What kind of dvd burner do you have? Is it capable of burning DVD+R DL (Double Layer) media? Is your burner's firmware up-to-date?

Perhaps go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php and look for the latest firmware if there is any available. Download it and run it to update your burner's firmware. It will enhance the burning and reading capabilities, not only that but it will be more compatible with other media and media codes.

NOTE: when you're ready to update your burner's firmware, make sure there is "NO" CD or DVD inside your dvd burner.

I don't know about you but I have a SONY DRU 710A BYX4 and I've been using the 2.4X - 4X Verbatim DVD+R DL (Made In Singapore) media for some of my DVD movies and so far they burned flawlessly.

And YES.... Steimy is right, when burning PS2 games using DVD Decrypter, always choose the MDS file.

My DVD burner is Samsung dual layer internal one.

I actually can't really get the driver (correct one installed properly), so my PC (win XP) just recognized it as CD drive.

Most probably this model: SH-W162C

Do you think it's because of the dodgy DVD RW?

@djmocok,

To check your dvd burner's firmware on Win XP:

- right click on "My Computer" on Desktop
- left click on Properties, left click on Hardware, left click on Device Manager
- left click the + sign on DVD/CD-ROM Drives
- righ click on your dvd burner, then "Properties," then "Details" and it will show your dvd burner and the firmware follow after that

Here is an example of mine: "BYX4" <--- is my current dvd burner's firmware.

Mine:

IDE\CDROMTSSTCORP_CD/DVDW_TS-H552U________________US04____\5&F328CA&0&0.0.0

My driver's date is 7/1/2001

version 5.1.2535.0

I thought my DVD RW was the one listed on my previous post, but windows recognised it as: TS-H552U model.

I think the driver is way out of date. How to update it?
I tried to download the latest driver (the one with BIN file) but couldn't install it. Windows for some reason couldn't detect.
What to do?

I installed the new one already from that website, but for some reason, under my hardware properties, it still shows old one...

I actually just toasted another DL again today. It's now approaching the price of a new GT4... lol

I will give it one final try tomorrow, if it can't that means my DVD RW can't copy DL properly then, because it can burn normal DVD R just fine.
