i just hope AD doesnt end up like Burningbits guys. All those RIAA pricks and authoritive bodies putting a clamp on free speech.

With us well there is no discussion on CSS,otherwise macrovision will close us.Thats a reality i dont want to see so unless another alternative fronts up we have to toe the line,

WHERE WILL ALL THIS MADNESS END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there is no such thing as FREEDOM OF SPEACH when it comes to big business. If it is hurting THEIR business THEY will find a way to stop it! It's inevitable. That's the way I see it and all the horn blowing about it won't change a thing! Money talks BS walks.....and I feel that if someone doesn't take a stand on this NONSENSE then we will all suffer and even be jailed for it! Anything to make THEM more money! Why put out a product and then THEY have a right to tell you HOW TO USE IT! Soon there will be BOOK BURNING too! When will this all stop!???

The problem is that it makes even backing up your legally owned DVD's. Posession of tools to do this is also illegal and having an "organized" conversation on any of this will be against the law. It doesn't matter where you live, you are going to get penalized with this one because of the "organized" conversation thing. I suppose we could all just PM everyone who asks, and just answer posts with the weather reports in our area.

Well, IMO closing down aD is an open attack on everyone's freedom of speech...They simply can't do that... aD will have to stop hosting copy protection circumventing programs in the worst case scenario, but they simply cannot take away our rights of discussing anything we want.
If anything happens, I wouldn't be averse to donating a couple of bucks to aD to help with legal costs.

And oh yeah, on a lighter note, does anybody here want a free Ipod?
:-) Just kidding, please dont ban me.

Ditto that... I haven't been as active lately as I have been in the past, but I still end my day getting "up to speed" here on aD... Just point to that PayPal link if the need arises. The knowledge that I've gained on aD is invaluable!!!

We wont be asking donations, ever. It is simply against our principles nowadays and would also be awful hassle legally (accepting donations requires a permission in Finland) -- we did it back in 2001-2002 and it saved us financially back then and we still owe enormous thank you for all the people who donated back then. Best way to help us financially, if you want to do so, is always the same -- support the companies who advertise on our site. If you plan on buying software/hardware/whatever, use links on our banners to do so.

But again, I'd like to stress the fact that we're not beaten yet, even tho the outlook of near future looks slightly dim. We have variety of options available, but due the nature of things, we can't state "yay! we've found a solution" until we actually find one and get our lawyers to confirm that it will work.

yes lets stay postive guys ,dRD and his crew will figure out a way around this so DONT panic ,we will all stick together and get though it.

i was thinking maybe we could start a group on msn and have or own private chat room to talk about ripping and burning dvds and we can just all meet there .i belong to several music groups so why not start one about all the stuff we chat about here

after spending 12yrs solid on 12hour shifts, repetition has kinda become part of my blood, but for me (around here anyway) i guess the debates on bad media keep the repetition at bay.

<blatant attempt to get myself on topic> if Finnish law stops us discussing backups etc, we can probably still talk about bad media and Nero logs 'til the cows come home :)

creaky: You're right about the fact that there are still tons of topics that could be discussed even if the legislation would restrict our forums' openness about topics. But the problem is that tons of new users come to us on quest for finding rippers from our site and portion of them also get hooked on other topics and become new contributing members. Now, losing that stream of new faces would harm our site in the long run, even though it obviously wouldn't kill it -- we're simply too big and cover too many topics to die if one part of that would be taken away :-)

dRD - i hear you, i was just being positive as the whole thing gets me angry. Next we'll have police spot checks in the street, where one of us who's carrying a cd player with an original cd in the drive will be sent on his way, and i might be carrying my mp3 player and i might be carted away. makes me sick

I would hate to see the same thing happen to aD/dRD that happened to the DVDxCopy creator when he took his fight to Washington. Might be more cost efficient to move the servers to where SlySoft is located and work them by remote and also move a couple admins over there as well for a semi - permanent rotating vacation. Maybe even work out a deal with SlySoft to help along.

this site isnt going away at the most they may have to put up a disclaimer notice for legal reason(so they dont get in trouble).if this site does get in trouble im sure the admin will just change the location anyway and still keep running it.

Yes there are other topics to talk about beside DVD backup, but as dRD pointed out there are so many people who come to this site for this reason and stay on. Everybody posting on this thread probably came here because of this. I know I did. I belong over at Burning Bits and don't contribute because it is to hard not to be able to mention this subject. Moving the server may not be the answer the company would still be based and incorporated or whatever in Finland, so would still be subject to Finnish law. I can see how you would make a law that makes DVD copying illegal, but talking about it is another matter. What about people who have clubs or something, does the govt then come and raid there home because they are talking about, it sounds very secret police.
