DVD-rip in widescreen format?

Hi everybody, I've got a DVD I want to back up as avi, but every time I try It turns out to be the old 4:3 format :(

I have used
SimpleDivx (Only the "warning" is converted to avi)
Vidomi (Don't know the outcome)
WinAvi (Seems to convert, but is Extremely slow, and can't set the conversion to to-pass)
AutoGK (Same problem as SimpleDivx)

I am currently using Vidomi, but is there anyone who knows wether the file output will be 4:3 or 16:9?

are you sure you are burning the correct side of the dvd? Some have standard on one side and widescreen on the flipside.
