i would use swap magic since it doesnt break the warrenty on the ps2. plus its only like $25. for everything on burning games use prefered dvd-r not +, and most games fit on one dvd unless u try GT4 or othere dual layer games. heres a site for the complete guide. the guide also is for burning games that go online but if your just copying the game just skip some instructions.
http://www.ps2nfo.com/on-line.html. hope it helps.
Ok, i can go into a little more depth that that.
Right now i have a PS2 with both, and unless you go
with the ultra cheap and not so easy slidecard method
either one will void your warranty. But you will need
one other mod to use Swap Magic. That alone will not play back ups.
and without knowing what PS2 version you have i can't really
tell you your options. But an aftermarket fliptop is available
for all of them. And the best method in my eyes
Swap Magic Pro's
can play all your games both PAL & NTSC
can play backups online using it if the game is patched
has screen mode settings to adjust to both NTSC and PAL format
works well and is not very expensive
Nothing to be installed
Swap Magic Cons:
can not play DVD9 (dual layer) back ups at all
Pain in the butt to use with a cheat disc like AR Max
Some games will have to be rebuilt to use with it or
they will not work
has some screen cut off when playing games from another region
You may not be able to see things at the bottom of the game like
health,ammo,maps and other stuff.
No upgradability, if it gets out of date or you want new features
you just have to buy the new set of discs they release.
Chip Pros: (DMS4 Pro,Lite,Matrix Infinity are the best)
No problems with games from any region thanks to force modes
and Y-Position fix settings that will force all games to
load with your regions screen mode.
do not have screen cut off once set up correctly in the settings
can play both DVD5 and DVD9 back ups
Use with a cheat disc just like an original
no swapping (loads back ups just like originals)
no rebuilding of any games
Has HDD (hard drive) support
has free upgrades, you just download the newest flash and
burn it to a CD. Then play it in your PS2 and your upgraded
with all the new features.
has many different boot modes available like fastboot that
will skip all the stuff at the beginning and take you right
to the main game screen.
Just all around less of a hassle than Swap Magic
Chip Cons:
Can not play games online with a chip enabled, you have
to turn off the chip which means only originals would load
to play online, unless you owned Swap Magic and a fliptop too.
a bit more expensive, but when you figure in everything not as
much as people would lead you to think.
(chip $50, install $50 + shipping) so about $135 to have it put in.
unless you have an older model PS2 then you can get the
DMS4 EZI Pro solderless chip that will do all the same things.
Swap Magic and flip top are about $40 + shipping for the combo
but like i said when it gets outdated, you have to spend another
$30-35 dollars and get new discs if you want the new features and
compatibility. Plus the DVD's you waste trying to burn a game
before you knew it had to be rebuilt (do some research and you
can mostly aviod this one, or just rebuild them all)
Do your research and pick what will work best for you. I used
Swap Magic and a flip top for about a year before i bought my
premodded PSTwo with DMS4 Pro, so it will work just fine for
most people. It is just more of a pain having to swap, or trying
to use cheat discs, and rebuilding some games, and having screen
cut off with different regions games.
sounds like i might go for the chip, i play online mostly .. i just thought it would be a bonus to have a chip & borrow games off friends/family to copy. Just so if i ddo get bored i can play offline games for the mean-time.
with those "SCREEN CUT-OFFs" does that only happen to downloaded games ?
thats fine, either will work. im using smd 3.6 with slide card and it only takes me like 2 min tops to swap games, would be shorter if it would load faster.

i dont know if u typed it wrong but the whole point of swap magic is its a cd/dvd based mod. oh and as far as i know u can play dl games with swap magic like GT4, the only problem is tryin to burn it to a 4.7 GB dvd and using swap magic to play it. i could be wrong but thats what i read so far.
Everywhere I've read is the flip-top doesn't void your warranty, but doesn't the flip-top method require you to break that warranty sticker to put the new lid on?
Personally I don't see what the big deal is about keeping your warranty intact. By the time your PS2 breaks down it'll probably be out of the warranty period anyway.
screen cut off's happen when you play a game that is not
from your region. Original or back up.
Like playing PAL games on an NTSC system
If you play mostly online they a chip is not right for you.
You can not play online with a chip enabled. Now if you have the
original game you can just disable the chip and play online
as normal with the original.
and to alc1688, i have no idea what your asking.
Like i said you can not just buy Swap Magic to play back ups
Another mod would include slidecards, fliptops, slimtools
and all the others.
No you can not play Dual Layer (DVD9) BACK UP'S with Swap Magic
That have to be worked over to fit on a DVD5. Once you shrink it
to a DVD5 it is no longer a dual layer game.
you need to read more closely before you post, everything i said
is 100% true.
