I have an NEC16XDVDRW ND-3540A Burner. I can burn dvd's either from the inetrnet or my private ones. The problem is they play fine on my computer but when I put them into my DVD Player I get a "disc error" message and I cannot view it. My player is approximately 5 years + old. Could that be it or is there some software I can use to by pass this problem? I use DVD Decrypter but the problem persists.
Thanks to all in advance.

there are many threads to this problem but I will try to explain it. One is the media that you use. http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
good media will stop errors and make life much better....... and if you are using Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell, Sony...... these are great media (first class)..... you shouldn't have problems with them.

The next thing to understand is that some stand alone players are picky with what disk it wants to play! And because yours is over 5 yrs old maybe you should be using DVD+Rs and booktype your drive to DVD-ROM. Some DVD drives are not able to Bootype..... but if you can it will make your disks more acceptable to DVD players. Here is a link that might explain it better than I can: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/183136
go to #12 and it explains Booktype/Bitsetting. That thread is full of information on everything and I highly recommend you reading it!
now if you want to try to Booktype your drive to DVD-ROM you can do it with DVDDecrypter, DVDInfo Pro and other programs, too. Since you have DVDDecrypter you just hit the TOOLS button on top..... hit DRIVE and then hit CHANGE BOOKTYPE. If you drive is listed then you can change it! Make sure your SOURCE drive is highlighted!DVDDecrypter does many things ....... it's very versitile! I hope I helped you a little. Good luck and if you can booktype your drive you will probably solve the problem you have!

IHoe,
I looked at DVD Decrypter and do not see Booktype in the tools drop-down button. I have DVDDecrypter version 3.1.7.0. Does that make a difference?

apollo60,

What format and brand of media are you useing? Use this free proggy and tell us the manufacturer and ID. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ You will have to flash your NEC with some hacked firmware to enable it to be capable of booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom.

The media(if I understand your question correctly) states DVD-R 8X (pin:1660939000) 4.7 GB?120 min Blank for General. The discs came with the burner. I just downloaded dvd indentifier, and it states that my Disc & Booktype is [DVD-R]-[DVD-R]
Manufacturer is Yaiyo Yuden
Manufacturer ID is TYGO2
Blank disc capacity is 4.71 G
I just downloaded DVDDecrypt version 3.5.4.0. No drop-down menu.
I'm not sure what "flash my NEC Burner" means? I did download "Flashmans detect firmware version tool" and it states that my NEC is firmware version 1.01, whatever that means.? If it makes a difference, my NEC is a dual layer burner,16X and the discs are 8X.
Sorry for all the confusion but I'm new to this. I usually figure out this stuff easily.

Looks like you are useing good media as long as they are genuine TY's and not fakes. Your best bet may be to buy a new cheapie set top dvd player. They will play almost anything. Take one of your back ups with you and make sure it will play in the dvd player before you buy it. Some old set top dvd players will not play anything but new pressed dvd's. It might play a DVD+R booktyped dvd-rom but since you are not familiar with flashing f/w or hacked f/w you better do some more research first. Also I don't have a NEC so I don't have a link to the hacked f/w. You could start a new thread titled "help with making my NEC capable of bitsetting".
