Hello, brand new PS2 (slim) owner, same old topic. I have read through 15 pages in this forum, did my google searches and still have unresolved issues. All relevant programs and equipment are installed and ready in my PC and PS2.

1. It seems that for a backup (DVD) to be PLAYABLE, EITHER the Swap Magic + slide switch/fliptop case OR a modchip is needed. RIGHT?

2. It seems obvious that DVD Decrypter can be used to READ and WRITE an ISO image to a (preferebly) DVD-R, so I do not know why people even bother to mention other programs when the freeware should do the trick. Now, has anyone managed to use DVD-RW OR DVD+RW disks?
Someone mentioned that DVD+R disks can be used, but DVD-R is preferable for longer laser life. SO, WHICH MEDIUM HAS WORKED THE BEST IN PRACTICE? Rewritable disks a go or no-go?

3. Some posts mention that some ISO files (ie, some games) created with DVD Decrypter might need to be patched, but they neglect to say HOW and using WHAT (I see PPF-O-Matic mentioned, but no reliable link for download).

WHAT IS THE STORY HERE? It is not that hard to write a decent one page technical document withgout omissions and errors, yet I haven't seen one yet. Also, a lot of mentions of "Ben Hohnson's guide to PS2 backups", but google does not provide a direct link!
Kinda frustrating in a specialised forum...no hard answers!

that is mostly correct. you can get Swap Magic and a Fliptop
The slidecard is for older models and will not work with the slim
you can get a slimtool, magicswitch or ghost switch instead
of the flip top also. And mod chips are always an option

Philips,TDK,Verbatim,Ritek G04, Taiyo Yuden
also Fuji & Sony made in Japan only!
8X DVD-R is what i like best (Philips)
But the slim should play either +R or -R, do not use RW
and i always use DVD Decrypter
some people already have other programs like Alcohol 120% and Nero
which will also work. Like me, Nero came free with my burner.

3. Some posts mention that some ISO files (ie, some games) created with DVD Decrypter might need to be patched, but they neglect to say HOW and using WHAT (I see PPF-O-Matic mentioned, but no reliable link for download).

Yes, if you use Swap Magic there are games that need to be patched
or rebuilt (rebuilding is just the manual process) the patch
basically rebuilds the game for you. I think it is easier just to rebuild them. Finding the patches and applying them correctly can
cause newbies some problems. Also some games need to have dummy
files removed or replaced and there are plenty of posts on here
that will teach you how to do this and rebuild games. But i would
say it is only about 5% of the games out there. I would search on the games name before you burn it and read a few post to see what others did

there are guides here and all over the net, you are just too lazy
to search for your own answers. These questions are basic knowledge
and have many, many, many posts here that already answered them.

and i will be nice enough to help you this time. But not if you
keep this up.

If it is so easy then why don't you do it!

I would just like to add that games that are played online such as "Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory" must also be patched to be playable online (for both modchips and swap magic). More about it here: http://www.ps2nfo.com/on-line.html

steimy although ur advice is invaluable and ur a good lad, please dont say "europeans" when talking about british people, firstly because one describes a continent and one describes a country. secondly as some1 from england i like to think of myself as some1 who is different to "europeans". thirdly everytime u say "europeans" in that context a metaphorical flame representing my love for america dies a little. Had to get that one off my chest :D

(Thank you for the additional info, I am not lazy at all, I am a professional engineer with twenty five years of work on my back, including a lot of professionally written technical documents and manuals. I have spent about 24 man hours of internet research so far on this topic and read 15 pages in this forum already, so lazy, a complainer, incompetent or a dummy who deserves to be called one I am not. I AM actually trying to compile the wealth of info I have found in a competent manner in my language for people in my geographic area, the guides to usage of DVDShrink for example is what I called professional).
So far, I gather that rewritable disks are OUT, patching is only necessary for the Swap Magic solution via various means that work for a particular game or range of games (which tips the scale in favour of a tried-and-tested hardware mod, about 70 Euro for a DMS 3 chip installed in my area) and that testing each game backup is necessary (I own two games so far that plus the AR Code CD).

Therefore, minimal list for reliable backup is hardware modded PS2, DVD Decrypter for the ISO read/write, quality DVD-R medium and a PC with a DVD burner, of course (NEC 4550A in my case). Thank you, good people.

don't get a DMS3 chip. it is way outdated
Get a DMS4 Pro or DMS4 Lite
Matrix Infinity is also a great choice
Sorry if i got you upset. But i did answer all your questions
in good detail as you requested. And will continue to
help you out with anything. I always answer my PM's too if you
need help and don't want to post it.
I have been helping people on here for quite some time now
and answering the same questions day after day sometimes just
get's me a bit upset sometimes.
i guess it just could be a case where you didn't find the
correct information because you did not have the correct
search terms. But the answers were all there.
I appologize
But i took offense to the last part of your post where it
implied that these forums do not provide correct information and error free guides. People worked very hard on those to help
other people out. Without forums like this one a lot of people,
including myself, would still be in the dark when it comes to
modding game consoles.

I don't know the availability of modchips in your area Mediter, but go with a DMS 4 Pro if you can. http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2#27 The Matrix Infinity and the DMS 4 Pro are your best bets. They both auto boot everything, are of high quality and are easy to flash. As far as people being a little defensive, there are A LOT of noobs that ask the same 3 questions over and over. 1.How do I use Swap Magic? 2.How do I back up PS2 games? 3.My backup doesn't work, what do I do? So it can get a little old answering those questions especially for guys like Hursty and Steimy who have been at this a long time.

if anyone finds a one stop guide to the whole ps2 thingy, pls post it here,it will save me a whole bunch of time, then maybe i can spend even more of my free time on the many other forums i am a member of,and not come here as much

its called sarcasm btw

and @mediter, i am not normally that rude, but sometimes its tiresome,so no offence :)

maybe after all the reading you have done, being as you have written manuals before, you could write one for here, and post it at this link

http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/62

good luck

and regards
