The dvds that I get from our public library have suddenly grown twp metal stripes somehow cemented on to the label side, one on each side of the centre hole, paralell to each other and each one about half way between the centre and the outside edge and each about 2.5 inches long by 1/4 inch wide.They look like siver ribbon and I cant tell if they are metal or plastic. What I do know is that I can no longer do a quick backup if the dvd has to go back to the library before I've had a chance to view it. Anyone come across these and does anyone have a fix forit?

Thanks for any help Cheers P.

They're probably just censor strips so that you don't steal them from the library. Have you tried backing them up like you normally do. I don't think they have an effect on you trying to back them up.

hi annapolly,

well, i TOO have seen these metallic strips on dvds before, while i actually THINK they are to deter thieves from taking a dvd OUT OF A STORE without "renting" or "purchasing" it, i believe the only purpose of them is they act as a "metal detector" deterrent~ :) most stores have those metal detectors right at the entrance/exit of their store, a LOT of times, even in retail stores such as bestbuy/tower records/ etc. they have these strips ON THE CD CASE itself to catch any "would be thieves" trying to walk out of the store without paying for the CD/DVD :)

if they are not "desensitized" at the checkout counter, naturally, the metal detectors SHOULD go off sounding the alarm~ :)

but, anyways, back onto topic, i HAVE received dvds with these 2 metal/plastic strips ON the top side of the dvd; may i ask what program you are using to make your backups? i have not had any problems with the dvds in question, i can make backups of these with little to NO problems at all~

just for clarification purposes so i don't self-incriminate myself, i had these 2 metal/plastic coated "bars" on my USED/PREOWNED blockbuster DVD that i PURCHASED from their retail outlet, i paid a meager $5.99 for the dvd in it's original case so i felt it was a "good buy" at the time...i backup ALL (not quite done yet) of my store bought dvds and despite the 2 bars that were on this USED/PREOWNED dvd, using DVD Decrypter, no problems at all~ :)

mind you, these PREOWNED dvds were in excellent condition, while the ones you get from the public library MIGHT not be in such good condition, with so many people borrowing them, i can imagine they have SCUFFS, SCRATCHES, small divits/pits, etc. on them, give them a good cleaning first and see if that helps any...if you are getting CRC errors, it doesn't necessarily mean that the disc is "bad/not-rippable", it might just be dirty w/ fingerprints, small scratches, etc from overexcessive handling of the disc...

give it a thorough cleaning and try it again...it MIGHT help~ :)

Thanks folks...Yes I'll try again but these disks only come out of the back room when you take the empty disk box to trhe counter and pay the lady. People can't nick them at the library. Any more comments welcome....Cheers P.

@annapolly
I concur with the others comments esp. DocTY eloquent reply.
I doubt there is any time of 'ripping detection' on these. Do as you normal would. But remember you should only be backing up dvd's you own :) Heck even that's illegal in some countries!

Thanks again for the replies folks....I'll give the next one a careful clean and have another go as soon as there's time. I'm using Decrypter and DVD Shrink and usually have no trouble. Cheers...P

u like that that huh 9mm? LOL~ :)

hi binkie, thanks for the kind words~ ur such a sweetie~ :P

@annapolly

yeah, give your "next one" a good cleaning, there shouldn't be a problem...but, sorry i went off on my "self-incrimination" reply, i've been receiving a LOT of PMs lately with people sarcastically telling me that there is NO WAY that you OWN so many dvds, no way you can have burned so many, i'm going to report you to fbi..etc.etc.. LOL

well, considering i've been collecting dvds for the past say, 10 years or so, how is it so unbelievable that my collections is 3,000+? am i rich? well, depends on how you define "rich", i'm "comfortable", but in no way would i consider myself "rich" LOL
anyways, apologies again for going off topic, just had to get that off my chest~ :)
