Hi

I have an avi which crashes most of the programs I try and open it with, ie:
Media player, VirtualDub, DrDivX, it does however play via the VLC player.

Do you think that this a codec issue or a problem with the file itself? If the problem is a codec, where could I get a suitable one from?

I would really like to to burn the file to a CD/DVD and watch it on a standalone DivX DVD player, so I need to be able to process it in another application.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it sounds like a codec problem. One of my favorites is the NimoCodec Pack. It is most compatible with VirtualDub which is also another favorite:
