I burnt LOTR pt 1 using DVD decrypter on 4x Laser dvd-r discs, split it with ifo edit and burnt it using nero 6.Yet when I try to play it on my panasonic nv-vp32 player the bastard says it does'nt support this type of disc but they state it plays dvd-r discs. It plays on my girlfriends Sharp player & also on my computer though. Can anyone help with an answer please?
P.S. Is it possible that panasonic bends that little bit further over to appease the anti-dvd backup gods?

What is the manufacturer and ID of your media? Use this free proggy http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Use the program I gave you the link to and tell me the manufacturer and ID. Laser is just the brand name of the disc and means nothing. Here are some manufacturers of laser media.

Laser DVD+RW 2.4x (...........)
Laser DVD-R 2x (MXL RG01....)
Laser DVD-R 4x (AML.........)
Laser DVD-R 4x (AN31........)
Laser DVD-R 4x (AN32........)
Laser DVD-R 4x (PRINCO......)
Laser DVD-R 4x (VANGUARD....)
Laser DVD-R 8x (TYG02) ??FAKE??

None look good. I would suggest useing better media.

Most any media will work for backing up files but for video reproduction you need good, proven, high quality media such as verbatum, taiyo yuden, maxell, sony mij, fuji mij (mij = made in japan), branded ritek ridata, Stay away from memorex, HP, phillips, no name, and retail store branded media eg. staples, compusa. Keep the burn speed to 4x.

Explains why it's labelled 4x but burns at 2x.My girlfriend will go back to Japan soon,so are the recommended brands sold mainly by their namesake or come under many names? It will be interesting to see the price diff between there & Oz.

What's the brand name and model# of your dvd-rw drive.

Has that panasonic played any of your backups,or is it only on LOTR?

Even though your panasonic stand alone says it will play dvd dash r,doesn't mean it will. Some stand alones are picky as to what format and even what brand of disc from each burner.Lots of variations between lasers.

As long as your pc,using the same dvd-rw drive that burned it,plays it good and it should look near original.

You gf's sharp player confirms it is a good backup by playing it.

Your panasonic is saying it does not like that disc. Several things to do:
1)Try higher quality dash media along with a burn of 4x or lower.Laser or Vanguard,I wouldn't even consider using.
2)Try plus format if the high quality dash media doesn't help. You must use high quality media so we can rule out a media quality issue. Try genuine taiyo yuden, verbatim data life plus,or sony 1x-8x.

When it comes to playing backups in many different stand alones/game consoles/and pc drives: I know how they can all vary at reading certain formats/certain MID codes/and even different burners. That's why myself and mort81 booktypes our plus format to dvd-rom.
The booktyping of plus to dvd-rom fools those stand alones into recognizing your backups.
Not all burners can booktype.
Tell us your burner brand name and model# and we may be able to tell you if it has the bitsetting capability to booktype.

It's an LG GSA-4040B that burns just about all formats including ram.I thought Panasonic helped develop -r format along with some other companies,or maybe I'm confusing it with DVD-Ram.

It does plus, dash, and dvd ram. I was checking out if it had the capability to booktype. The newer LG's do,but not sure of this older drive.

I'd try some quality plus format media, burn a few backups and try playing them in your panasonic and gf's sharp dvd players. Your Panasonic just may favor the plus format off of your LG 4040b.

Here's a site for some info on your burner:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive/502

Dvd decrypter has the capability to booktype using plus format media only.On the main page when you open up DVD Shrink, you'll see a small folder on the lower right corner.Click on that folder/click LG tab: Set Change for DVD+r/and select NEW SETTING as dvd-rom/change/OK.

If it won't allow you to set the booktype, those settings may be grayed out or says on current setting:Unknown and it will then say failed after trying to set the booktying. You may want to give that a shot because the booktyping may help you if your lg has that capability.

I dont really know what booktyping is.Another question I wanted to ask is about DVD shrink. After using decrypter then shrink I found standalone players (not sure about the two I previously mentioned)only displayed choppy, pixelated muck, which I put down to compressing the movies too much. They played reasonably well on the computer(owing to the grunt maybe of comp). Therefore if I use quality media, decrypter & DVD shrink will I get a reasonable backup of a
movie(even a relatively long one? (Phew!)
P.S. Panasonic instructions say that player does'nt support + media.

Poor quality media is the #1 cause of freezing and pixelating followed by burning to fast and then excessive compression. A lot of times the dvdrw drive that burned the disc will play it back ok even on poor quality media because it is what burned it. Your media is sub-par and good quality media will most likely solve your freezing and pixelation problems. Try some good DVD-R media and burn it at 4x. I don't recommend compressing over 30% (70 on the bar) with DVD Shrink.

Here's a little info on your stand alone panasonic:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=4951&Search=Sea...

Someone there had success with that player playing plus rw backups. This leaves hope for plus rs.

Switching formats is usually due to stand alone players not recognizing your backups.Pixellation and viewing issues are another story. Both those still can be affected by poor quality media.I've seen it many times.

This is one of the main reasons for quality media.Highly compressed backups can really show the quality problems of pixellation. You're pc is suppose to play those backups and the view should be near original. Now you play them on stand alones. Some of them can really pick out these cheaper/low quality manufacturers.

Dvd shrink has extra quality enhancements like Adaptive error compensation. Using the Max smoothness or Max sharpness helps on these higher compressed backups.Takes longer, but well worth it. Putting 3+ hour movies on a single DVD-5 is no problem for me.

You've got to give the quality media a shot.It can rule out many things. If that panasonic shows those pixellated issues with the quality media, then that'd lead to a cleaning of the panasonics laser lens..

Appreciate the info,Thanks alot.Someone wrote Ritek-Ridata was good media sold under diff names, similar to what Lite-on does with its own drives.Does anyone know the other names it is sold under?
I've never heard of it,but it sounds like a Japanese brand so I may be able to pick some up discounted.

Ritek is made in taiwan. I come across riteks on the taiwanese maxell 8x in both plus and dash. Now reports of maxell using cmags on some of their media, they are also made in taiwan so it's a lot riskier to find the ritek or cmag maxells.

I've been getting ritek-R03 on my office depot brand +8x in the 50 and 100 pack spindles. These are excellent, and were only 25 cents each during Office Depot's last sale.A sale should be coming up. If you have nearby Office depot, keep an eye out for their weekly flier. They have lots of sales maxell and OD media and majority are riteks.
