Hi all

I've been burning DVDs for a couple of months now and I've just formated my PC and since then it wont burn any. It dosent matter which wrighting program I use it just dosnt work. I've used Nero and it all goes well until I click burn, it starts catching the files and then it just freezes no error message or nothing and I have to reset my PC to get things working again. I've used Record now delux and Clone DVD with the same results. I was using an NEC dvd recorder so I went to the local PC shop and bought a new Light-on DVD Recorder and the same thing is happening. They both work fine when I'm burning a standard CD but they wont do DVDs.

I'm running Windows XP with Service pack 2

Any help would be apreciated as I am still very much a novice at this

Cheers Haych

I would say restore to an earlier point but it sounds like that's not an option. I would start from scratch and go with another clean install of the OS. then install just the proggies you need to rip and burn and see if there is any conflicting software. if it works only install a couple of your applications at a time ,testing your burning capabilities after each install. If it craps out, try uninstalling the latest batch of proggs 1@ a time with the burn test after each one. You might go through a few discs or might not.

Lo travalon

Must have formated my PC a couple of times now and did just as you sugested. I started with just Nero and tried to copy a backed up disc that I had done previously and no go. So then I uninstalled Nero and tried the same thing with record now delux and still no go. I didnt have anything else installed then not even my internet connection.

Cheers

could it be that your computer is not recognizing your drive as a DVD writer? try doing a firmware update on your drive! See if that helps! http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php Just put in your drive name in the Search for Download and it will find the newest firmware for your drive. Maybe that's all it needs!

i may be able to help here - re Nero - let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W
Network ~ DD-WRT ~ 2node WDS-WPA2/AES ~ Buffalo WHR-G54S. 3node WPA2/AES ~ WRT54GS v6 (inc. WEP BSSID), WRT54G v2, WRT54G2 v1. *** Forum Rules ***

that log entry is from a CD burn but it's a good start, have made recommendations.. let's still have a DVD log entry...

Quote:
Nero version: 6.3.1.26 (Nero Express)
- out of date, 6.6.0.16 is the latest, well the last 6.x version, now that 7's coming out now

Recorder: <LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1693S>Version: KS09
- firmware's 2 revisions behind, KS0B came out today, in fact i flashed mine to this level about half hour ago, here's 2 links -

- DMA needs to be ON, fix via this - have a look down this thread - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/231433 - especiallly the bottom of page 2 and thru page 3 of this - 'kurtp21' has very good info on these troublesome VIA drivers/and how to reset them.

Hi Creaky

Cannot show you a DVD log from Nero as it does not creat one when I try to burn a dvd. I have to use the reset button on my tower to get Nero to shut down as it will not respond (same with record now delux)they just freeze and my DVDRW will not open.

I've used kurtp21's link http://drivers.viaarena.com/VIA_HyperionPro_V500A.zip I've d/l it and installed it and it hasnt made any difference

Is there any other way to get the DMA on?

Not sure how to update my frirmware on my DVDRW, I've never done it before, but it was doing it with my NEC DVDRW as well as this new Light on.

Please let me know if you have any other thoughts

can't think of anything over and above what advice i've given re the DMA stuff, but as to the firmware, i omitted giving a link to the fimware flashing utility "LtnFW" - http://dhc014.rpc1.org/howto.htm#LtnFW - there's a good description on that link as well as the fimware flashing utility itself

Lo Guy's

You two are absolute geniuses. Creaky you spoted the DMA fault and Rich you showed me how to turn it on, and it worked a treat. Tried to uninstall the primary IDE channel first but it wouldnt let me, so I uninstalled the secondary IDE channel. When I rebooted it didnt recognize any drives on the secondary cable so I thought I was going backward. So I uninstalled all the VIA chipset drivers that I installed to try and get the DMA back on and it restarted my PC when it had finnished uninstalling automaticaly. When it booted back up it had reinstalled the primary and secondary IDE with the DMA switched on and I've just burnt my first DVDR in a month thanks to you 2.

Once again boys thanks a lot and thanks a lot to afterdawn for such a good and helpful site with great members that share their wealth of knowlage on computers.

Cheers Haych
