I couldn't find any forum dedicated to DVD burners, so I thought I'd post it here. If this is in the wrong section, I apologise.

Now, onto the question. I plan on purchasing some DVD+R's, seeing as how they are very inexpensive. The only problem I am having is that I'm not sure whether or not they will work with my burner.

My burner isn't labelled with any particular brand, it came factory with my PC, I don't have a list of installed hardware. On the burner, however, there are some DVD-related labels: one that says DVD R/RW, and one that says RW DVD+ReWritable.

Would either of these indicate compliance with DVD+R media? Thanks in advance.

Do you have Nero or DVD Decrypter installed on your computer, because both these programs will give you the information on your drives capabilities. With Nero just open the info tool, and you will get what your drive can do. With Decrypter go to the Tools tab, then Drive and then Capabilities. If you do not have either or these then dl DVDInfo Pro.

You might also be able to tell what your burner is by selecting Device manager under My Computer properties and then clicking on DVD/CD-ROM drives if using Windows.

Wow, I didn't know I had such amazing resources on my PC! I ran both tools, but they're telling me the exact opposite, literally. Everything Nero says I can do, DVD Dycrypter says I can't, and visa versa.

I have a question about some of the results. What is this DVD+R DL? It seems i can write to normal DVD+R and DVD+RW media, but not DVD+R DL. Is DVD+R DL common or just some really messed up format that I would never find in stores anyway, so I wouldn't need to worry about accidentally buying it.

@ spitzfire, the DVD+R DL is the new "dual layer" or "double layer" disc that is used primarily to make backups of dvds with NO compression involved...the actual capacity of the DL discs are approximately DOUBLE that of the normal "standard" single layer 4.7gb discs~ :)

there are in the market right now, but still come at a significant premium over the single layer DVD-5 discs~

regular 4.7gb media = DVD-5 (what they are referred to as in some circles)

double layer 8.5gb media = DVD-9 (another name for them depending on who you ask)

so that is the difference...if your burner is not capable of burning onto these DL discs, then simply do not buy them...just get the "regular" ones you see locally, but it is IMPORTANT that you use GOOD QUALITY media when you start burning on the dvd+rs, suggestions are in my signature~ good luck~

docTY~

What is the make and model of your burner and what is the current firmware? Go back into Decrypter and post the info, it looks like this

Just want to make sure everything is up to date on your drive :)

sorry i'm just a busybody :)

...snippet from http://dhc014.rpc1.org/indexOEM.htm#DW-U18A -

Drives with Gear driven trays:
- UYS1 - Dated "Feb10 ,2004"
- UYS4 - Dated "Jun28 ,2004"

Drives with Belt driven trays:
- UFS1 - Dated "Apr07 ,2004"

so it sounds like there's an update for your burner (UYS4)...

keeping firmware up to date is essential - it's what teaches your burner about media/newer media/burn speeds. It's something to be done very carefully, ie you mustn't reset pc during the update or turn off the power. pray for no power cuts during the (quick) update process as it can render the drive unusable.

yup, just checked the readme in the actual zipped firmware file that you download, snippet here

Flash in Windows using "LtnFW"
- have provided a link to download that (the firmware flasher utility itself) here - http://dhc014.rpc1.org/howto.htm#LtnFW - that top section of that page gives a lot of good info and a link to the 'ltnfw' utility that you'll need to download to actually apply the firmware file
