I know that Memorex, Philips, Imation, and most store-brand DVDs are bad. I know that Verbatim and Tuako Kidan (or however it is spelled) are good. What about Maxwell discs? Are they horrible, bad, alright, good, or great?

Quote: What about Maxwell discs
I hope you meant Maxell! LOL
Welcome to AD my friend.
Some are poor, very good, and other maxells are great!
Like those brand names you mentioned, maxell also have many different manufacturers.
Maxell dash 4x: Ritek-g04/Ty-g01/Mxl-rg02
Maxell Plus 4x: Ricohjpn-r01
Maxell Plus 8x: Ritek-R03 and Maxell-002-00
Maxell Plus 8x full hub printable: Maxell-002-00
Maxell dash 8x: Ritek-G05/Mxl-rg03
Maxell Dash 8x full hub printable: Likely Mxl-rg03?
What's nice, those codes were among all of maxells no matter which size spindle or jewel case pack that I got.
There are some cmags thrown in with those dash maxells lately, that I have heard a few posts about on both -8x and -4x..
All those manufacturers, other than cmags are very good and great.Look on the labels for Made in Japan for the best maxells. Those are hitachi made using Maxell-002-00/Mxl-rg02/Mxl-rg03/and Taiyo yuden made ty-g01.
The ritek and ricoh maxells are very good, but made in taiwan.Unfortunantly cmags are also made in taiwan,so they will be trickier now.
The most common problem of all these maxells is usally fixed with an up to date firmware on your DVD-RW drive. Some of those MID codes may not be recognized.
I'll take any of those ricoh/ty/ritek/hitachi maxells any day of the week! They all perform great for me,but someone else may have trouble with them. Now with maxell using cmags,I'd be leary of taiwanese maxells from now on.
Where are you located at?

Maxells are High Grade media, they are top notch media, and yes... they're in the same class as the famous Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. Here http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm check it out for yourself. Below is a scan test, which I burned both at 4X (on both 8X media) just to show that they're pretty close on the results.
Here is the High Grade 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan" from MAXELL
And here is the famous Taiyo Yuden "Made In Japan"

good day to you all, and Cibus, QUALITY-WISE, saugmon's list is very good and accurate...so, to answer your question, they COULD be all those things you mentioned, depending on WHICH ONES you obtain~

sorry aabbccdd, but i will HAVE to correct you here, the Maxell MIJ ONLY in the 4x speed are TYs, the 8x dvd+R (which is probably what most people are looking for and finding easily locally) are NOT Taiyo Yudens :)
Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB YUDEN000T01 4x (this is the ONLY speed for Maxell that are TYs)
and
the same holds true for the 4x speed in the dvd-r format
Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB TYG01....... 4x (again TY coded, but 4x ONLY)
sorry to burst your bubble~

Charitas, everybody. I guess I wasn't paying attention when I wrote Max"w"ell (twice). I have +R 4x discs that are made in Taiwan. They ended up working fine. I asked my question because I will be purchasing some more discs later on. I'm glad to know that Maxells are good discs. I will make sure not to buy Memorex or Philips, though. Again, charitas, everybody.
