How do I use DVD Decrypter First in Conjunction with DVD Shrink to Create a Backup of a DVD?

It is imperative that you use the latest version of DVD Decrypter to successfully rip DVD's with Sony's new copyright protection system called "ARccOS?". Currently the latest version of DVD Decrypter is version 3.5.4.0 .

"How do I use DVD Decrypter to "rip" the files to my hard drive?"

Below I will walk you through the steps of creating a backup of a DVD using DVD Decrypter.

1. Insert the DVD you wish to back up into your DVD-ROM or DVD burner, whichever you use to "read" the DVD.

2. Open up DVD Decrypter. (A screen may pop up saying "Possible RCE Protection Found!" Please select the region shown on the disc's cover/case/box.") Select your region according to where you live. In the United States, that usually will be "Region 1". Then click "OK" at the bottom of the window. On my screen, all the options were grayed out and/or un-selectable.)Example Below:

(The below step (#3.) is assuming you are in "File" mode. If you are not or do not see "Edit" at the top, click "Mode", then click "File F", the "Edit" menu should now appear at the top.)

3. Next, click "Edit" at the top. Select "All files" (NOT "movie files"). Example Below:

4. Next, select the "Destination Directory". (Basically where you want DVD Decrypter to put the files after you have ripped the DVD.) Example Below:

5. Now your ready to start the decryption process. Just click the "Decrypt" button. Example Below:

6. After DVD Decrypter has finished decrypting the DVD, your done with DVD Decrypter for now. You may exit/close the program.

"How do I use DVD Shrink to "Shrink" the files that DVD Decrypter made so that they will fit on a standard Disc 5 DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW disc?"

Below I will walk you through the steps of "Shrinking" the files created by DVD Decrypter so that they will fit on a standard Disc 5 DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW disc.

1. Open DVD Shrink.

2. Click "Open Files". (Not Open Disc)

3. Navigate to the folder where the decrypted files are that DVD Decrypter created. Then click "Open files" (NOT "Open Disk") and select "VIDEO_TS.IFO" or the actual "VIDEO_TS" folder. Example Below:

or

4. Now in DVD Shrink, select/de-select unnecessary items or items you do not wish to be on the back up.

5. After you done, click the "Backup!" button at the top of the screen. Another "RCE Region Protected" screen might pop up. If so, either specify the region code you wish or "Leave R.C.E. coding unmodified". Up to you as to which one you pick.

6. Next screen is the "Backup DVD" screen, with 5 different tabs along the top. They are as follows: "Target Device", "DVD Region", "Quality Settings", "Options", and "Burn Settings". I will go through each tab, and explain the options.

First, the "Target Device" tab. This is where you can select the backup target. Screen Shot Below:

***When burning with DVD Decrypter, you want to pick this one: Screen Shot Below:

You can also select the directory here. (Where you want DVD Shrink to save the files on your computer.) Screen Shot Below:

Second, is the "DVD Region" tab. Here you can select which region you would like, or make it region free. (I make all mine "region free". You can also change the "Provider ID" here. Do not know what it is, so I just leave it alone. I have a couple of times erased what was there and put "jmet" there. It does not affect the back up in any way if you do change it.) Screen Shot Below:

Third, is the "Quality Settings" tab. Here you can select if you would like DVD Shrink to perform a "Deep Analysis" before actually encoding the DVD to improve video quality and almost guarantee output size. It is highly recommended to put a check mark in that box! Also you can put a check mark in the A.E.C. box. A.E.C. stands for "Adaptive Error Compensation". This will also greatly improve video quality and has on some DVD's (The Bourne Supremacy for one) made it able to even back them up. Screen Shot Below:

Fourth, is the "Options" tab, here you can specify if you would like to "Run backup in low priority mode". Very useful if you multi-task while encoding a DVD. Or "Shutdown computer when DVD Shrink is complete"(that one is self explanatory), and if you want DVD Shrink to play a sound that you will be able to hear through you computer speakers to let you know that DVD Shrink has completed the task of ripping the DVD and creating the file/s you choose. Screen Shot Below:

Fifth, is the "Burn Settings" tab, here you can select the "Volume Label" & "Burn Speed" & "Book Type" if the "Burn with Nero" is checked in the DVD Shrink preferences. If you do not have "Burn with Nero" checked in DVD Shrink's preferences, it will be grayed out like mine. Here is a Screen Shot Below of what I mean:

7. After you have made all of your selections, you may click the "OK" button at the bottom.

8. After clicking ok, the analyzing screen will pop up if you choose to do the Deep Analysis or the encoding screen will pop up if you decided not to do the Deep Analysis. Screen Shot Below:

9. Your done with DVD Shrink! Wait for it to finish.

"How do I use DVD Decrypter to burn the .ISO file to a DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW disc?"

Below I will walk you through the steps of burning the files created by DVD Shrink using DVD Decrypter.

1. Open up DVD Decrypter.

2. Click Mode at the top. Then click "ISO". Then click "Write". Screen Shot Below:

3. Then click, the write button. Screen Shot Below:

4. Done!

I hope this guide as simplified for some of you who do not understand all of the technical jargon thrown around loosely on the forums. As I remember when I was a newbie, and had no clue as to what they were telling me.
