I have had mine do that a number of times. The only fix for it that I have found is to take off the back cover, battery, sim card, back top cover, rubber speaker holder, and then unplug the flat video cable from the main board. You will need a T6 wrech but its not too hard.

My family has 4 of these phones. Of them 2 of them are the only ones that have not had problems. Mine recently did, making it 3 of them, all less than 1 year old, and treated well within the life of a cell phone. One of the phones continuosly will not charge or run off the power plug, and the battery is fine. The other one has had the bad screen problem a number of times. I have had no luck what so ever figuring out what would cause this however, just removing the battery and sim card don't reset it enough. The only thing that worked for me was to dissconnect the signal cable. So, how to do that...
1. Remove the battery cover, battery, antenna, and Sim Card.
2. The top back cover is that which was physically above the battery. It has the grates on the casing for the speaker. Use a small flat head screw driver and pry underneath it on both sides. It should pop off.
3. Remove the four T6 screws, two on the bottom of the phone and two towards the top of the phone, One of each on each side.
4. Use the flat head screwdriver to pry the clips of the back case on the antenna side of the phone. Once the one side is finished sometimes it will open like a book or you need to pry the other side.
5. Lift off the back cover, and the metal sheilding.
6. Under that is a black rubber holder for the speaker at the top of phone. Take it off but be careful not to tear it from the two contacts that hit the speaker.
7. Right underneath that is the flat video cable. Use a finger nail or the screwdriver (unconductive material us best) and pry it up from the bottom towards the top. Re-seat the cable and put the phone back together. It should work, however if you wait with the screws and do everything else you can test it to make sure. I have had times where I have to re-connect it a couple of times to make it actually work.
Good luck and let me know how it works out for you.

No problem on the instruction, I'm glad I could help. I agree completly with seithan in selling the phone. I'm looking to do that as well. Want to get a nokia phone and never ever touch a motorola phone again (although the Razor looks nice). Also even though you are on a 3 year contract, I have not heard of a contract that locks you to a specific phone. You should be able to purchase an unlocked phone online or upgrade from your provider. Good luck.

I used the steps above and they worked brilliantly. You can get a T6 screwdriver for $3 at Sears (or I imagine most hardware stores). Its a simple fix and $3 is a lot cheaper than the $50 insurance deductible, buying a new one retail, or signing on for 2 more years for a free upgrade.

Thanks!

I'm pleased to know that it has helped and that people have taken advantage of this to fix their phone easily. I have since upgraded to a Nokie simply because I hated having to do this a few times a week.

This worked! -- Thanks, mogg851!!!

I spent the day yesterday arguing with Cingular over this same issue. The phone worked just fine, but the screen was blank. The backlight came on, so I just had a nice, black screen. I was able to make and receive calls. Everything else on the phone seemed to be working correctly, but nothing showed on the display.

Cingular basically told me that there was nothing that could be done to fix the phone and that I would have to buy a new phone since I am just outside of the warranty period. However, since I signed up for a two-year contract, I am not eligible to upgrade my phone. So, I would have to pay the full, non-contract price for the new phone AND would have to extend my contract another two years.

Motorola was very nice and told me that they will fix the phone for a flat fee of $75, no matter what is wrong with it. However, they stated that it would take 10-14 business days to return it.

I searched for quite a while last night and found your post. I tried it this morning and, five minutes later and no cost, it is working perfectly.

Thanks again!!!

I have fortunatly moved on and haven't used this my v220 in a while, actually I don't know where it is, anyway, I'm pretty sure it will only work if the backlight still comes on. If the screen is completely dark, you probably won't get anything. My suggestion would be try it again and then take it somewhere, there isn't a whole lot more the general public can do with these kinds of electronics these days.

The back light still comes on. so does the caller id screen on front. just nothing on the screen

I will try the process again.

I read about changing the flex cable. but not sure if i am just wasting my time.

thanks for your note
