Ok, I'm using a Sony DRU-800A, and my media is some Memorex 16X DVD-R (not the best ive figured out) and I want to burn my DVDs at 4X but Nero wont let me choose below 6X. DVD Decrypter lets me choose any speed, so I chose 4X and it just failed when it started writing. Any help on this? I'm rather new to this, and rather confused.

Well, you've just answered your own question from above. Just to be on the safe side, can you put a blank Memorex on your burner and run DVD Decrypter to get the Manufacture Id & code?

Hi there,

Those 16x media are probably so new, your drive doesn't know how to handle them (I assume).

So it's probably using a Generic Burn Table and won't provide you the supported speed for those media.

Firmware v1.0a is the latest for your drive (I know cause I checked earlier for an other guy).

To be honest, I don't why people buy and want to burn at 16x, it's just way to quick period.

I buy 4x Taiyo Yuden and burn everthing at 2x, yes 2x and I get 100% results.

Memorex are the worste media out there anyway :)

My 2 cents...

I've realized now Memorex are no good, they were super cheap so im jsut gonna use them for random data storage. Ive bought these 8X TDK singles lately that have burned well, lowest I can choose with them is 4X, and thats what i used. I have the best firmware for my drive, I updated it a few days ago thinking that may fix the problem. I am pretty straped for cash so I need something affordable, but has the quality (maybe that impossible).

Honestly, TDK is not much of an improvement over Memorex .. Find some MIJ Sony discs on sale (now at Best Buy), Verbatim, MIJ Maxell .. ANYTHING but Memorex or TDK

I had the same problem with my Sony drive. My drive will not burn below 4x. I have tried every disc that lists itself as being able to burn 1x-Xx and it will not burn below 4x. New firmware still won't do it. I'm sure you can find some discs to go to 4x though.

I use Taiyo Yudens and they'll drop to 4x just fine. But they as well won't drop below that. You should have no problems burning at 4x.

i'm having this same problem with the Lite-on 1693S (the Sony DRU-800A is a rebadged Lite-on 1693S) - except i'm having this 'problem' on my Verbatim 8x MCC003 discs. i'm not happy about this, and also i can't booktype on mine nor update the firmware. I have bought a replacement (LG 4167B) and until i saw this post i was gonna swap my 1693S for the Sony 800 but now i don't think i will..

..because the firmware for these drives should in theory be an extension of firmware from previous Lite-on/Sony drives..

guess we gotta wait for newer firmware (even though the 2 versions since my version - i was on KS09, KS0A nor KS0B address the issue with the MCC003 discs). and KS0B only came out yesterday.

(the latest firmware for the Sony 800, KY05 is here btw - http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#800

My BenQ will burn everything I've tossed at it at 2.4x, 4x, and 8x. (basically whatever speed I want) It loves to burn the 16x Verbs at 16x and seems to get the best scans burning discs at their rated speed. It will overburn the 8x Fuji/Yudens at 16x and the scans are awesome.

i'm sorry to hear of your burner woes creaky, mine doesn't seem to have that problem...i really don't know what else to say, seems like you SHOULD take it back and get something else (along w/ your new LG) :)

i'm going to have to try to overburn on MY Benq 1640 too, catfreak, based on YOUR success, i will have to test the scans shortly afterwards @16x to see how good they REALLY are~ :)

wow, how GOOD quality drives with GOOD quality media makes ALL the difference...i also agree with catfreak's comment

good lord i HATE TDK, on MY setup, TDKs own TTG01/TTG02 coding is JUST AS BAD as the dreaded CMC MAGs :) go figure? LOL

The Litey 1693S got the boot, well a temporary reprieve - it's in my USB2 enclosure for now, but as it still doesn't show booktype setting in Nero it's gonna have to go back to the shop, might try the Sony 800A instead, may get something completely different. The new LG 4167B is installed and my MCC003 can now burn at 4x again. yay.

@ hi Doc :)
as creaky knows i've got a liteon 1693s as well and have the same thing . can't get it to burn my Ritek or my Verbs slower than 6x either. although unlike creakies mine does booktype ok
don't get me wrong i've done over a 100 burns and 7 D/Ls with it and they are flawless , so haven't binned it. just a bit paranoid about burning over 4x.
sent creaky a PM 10min's ago to ask how he was getting on with it. then run across this thread . i now no he isn't
ah! ha! speak of the devil, just got a PM back from him, will go read it

i'm just reflashing mine via the usb2 enclosure to KS0B again - if it still won't booktype it's going back to be swapped for another 1693S. or maybe the Sony equivalent drive. if no joy with that it's a refund. at least the sexy new LG 4167B is burnign and booktyping sweetly..

LOL creaky~!! i am seriously troubled that you got yourself a faulty 1693S :) can't booktype it, don't give yourself more headache, get a replacement drive or whatever else you find "sexy" at the store~! :P

@ gurnard

hiya buddy, well, maybe it's just dumb luck for me as i TOO have that same drive, got it hmm...about 2 months ago? or a little less, i have NO troubles updating firmware or booktyping, besides, you know me, i burn ALL my Verbs MCC003s @8x, so, the need to be able to slow down the speed is NOT an issue FOR ME~ :) 4x, 6x, 8x, whatever floats ur boat i guess, no pun intended for you 2 guys :)

i stick w/ my @8x burns on all my 8x rated media...many many burns later, still same result =FLAWLESS backups :)

good day to you both, best of luck creaky in getting another "sexy" drive~ u and your "sexy" stuff, how come i don't have anything "Sexy?" LOL

docTY~

following on from my last reply, i was up virtually all night as kitten went missing in the heavy rain last night. had a last look for him before 6 this morn, he'd somehow got underneath one of the pontoons and had got stuck there so had to crowbar him out, bless him. Anyway, back on topic i also crowbar'd the 1693S out of my usb2 enclosure, it's going back today, still not sure if i can be bothered swapping it for the Sony 800 as per the original poster's problems with the lack of firmware flexibility.

@Bobus -

sorry i've hijacked your thread with my 1693S/wildlife tales of woe :) - but it's all intended to help you as well as my own drive problem; as i think i said further up the thread - for some reason the firmware for the 1693S is lacking, hence it's also lacking in Sony's equivalent firmware as the 2 drives are the same difference. Nothing that can't be fixed in newer firmware but it's very annoying (and slack if i'm honest) that the firmware has come up lacking. I'm also sure i've said this already (too tired to read thru whole thread, sorry) but there's been 2 newer versions of firmware out for the Litey and no doubt there will be a few more versions out shortly while Sony and Lite-on still have the novelty of their drives being fairly current.
I'll end by saying that in your case the firmware should be brought up to speed soon as i guess it's not just the two of us in the world having this 'issue' with the firmware. In my case the drive does seem to be faulty and while i was able to flash the firmware in my spare pc AND via usb enclosure in main pc, i am not gonna bother wasting more time trying to see if booktyping magically works on the spare pc.

Not trying to rubbish the name of the Sony/Litey drive, far from it, just hope some of this babble from me has proved helpful and at the very least gives a heads up for anyone searching posts for a similar issue..

@Bobus - tell you what (don't worry, i'll keep this one short lol), gonna check and see if i can verify the lines in the firmware that are lacking for those Memorex (might be tricky as i don't know which media code your Memorex really are)..

here ya go, the only Memorex 16x -R i can find info on at the moment are these media codes - RitekF1 and (ugh!) CMC Mag, specifically the CMC Mag.AM3's.....

and if your discs are either of those, the SONY firmware supports the following speeds for those two media codes -

RITEKF1 -00 [ 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x ]
CMC MAG. AM3-00 [ 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x ]

It's possible your Memorex may not be either of those two i've listed... but hope that helps a little...

if you like, download dvd identifier (free) - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id... and use it to identify one of those 16x Memorex and paste details here and you/we could look thru the readme in the following firmware file to see what speeds are supported in latest firmware (KY05).

Lastly, here's some firmware links for your Sony firmware....

An addition to the Memorex 16x manufacturers list ...
supposedly there are some MCC03RG20 coded Memorex media out there ...

since I will only buy Verbatim in the -R format, I'll never be able to verify this personally

cheers, found some 16x +R Memorex -

Memorex CMC MAG.M01
Memorex MCC.....004
Memorex PHILIPS.C16
Memorex PRODISC.R04
Memorex RICOHJPNR03

- i still wouldn't use Memorex's MCC004 myself...but that's just me.

Just got my replacement 1693S, if this drive works properly i'll try to use omnipatcher to add 4x writing to the MCC003 discs.

some success for me today, but not enough. swapped my faulty 1693S today (manufactured date June 05) for another 1693S dated Aug 05) and stuck it in the USB enclosure. updated firmware from KS0A to KS0B, then used onnipatcher and hacked the firmware to allow 4x on MCC003. burnt a movie at 4x (yay) and crc checked it fine. But still unable to booktype. what on earth is happening here, even Nero doesn't acknowledge that it can booktype, not any Litey utils. nor cd-dvd speed. Argh!. gave up and did all remaining burns on the sexy LG 4167B, any +R i used were auto-booktyped in Nero just like the Sony 700A was doing before. sweet.

But it means the second 1693S is going back to the shop. the best they have in the shop now is the LG 4163B for the same price (£50). Whilst that's a nice drive and was the one i was gonna buy before i found the 4167B online, i think i'd rather have a refund and buy another 4167B online for £32 plus £5 postage, and what the hell, yet more Verb TY's to make myself feel better...
