Hi there, i personally like the Sony & Lite-On drives myself, now i've seen your post it's reminded me i hadn't ordered another burner i keep promising myself; i was going to buy an LG 4163B but the local site i order all my blank dvd's from has started doing it's replacement, the LG-4167B, so i read a review on it over the weekend.
(Most current Sony's have been rebadged Lite-on drives - see one of my favourite links here, it shows a lot of drives that are Lite-on or rebadged Lite-on's) - http://codeguys.rpc1.org/dvdrw_overview.html - these drives are extremely well supported..

NEC drives are supposed to very good, but there's 2 downsides as i see it. The first, and the main reason i never end up buying one, is that they bring a new drive out every other day. Now while that's a great thing in some respects, the thing that it makes me nervous of, is will they keep updating the firmware long enough with so many drives. There are fantastic 3rd party firmware resources, such as Liggy&Dee, there's another whose name escapes me. Which brings me on to my second concern. well i suppose concern is too strong a word. NEC don't seem to like providing support for bitsetting, or booktyping as it's also known. This is however where these 3rd party guru's come in, as they always beat the firmware into submission and make the drives capable of booktyping.

Anyway that was a long reason NOT to buy an NEC drive!, the only real reason to not buy one is why worry about stuff like that when you can buy Lite-on/Sony/LG etc, and none of those things are concerns - common sense to me personally, but that's just my opinion.

Other people recommend Plextor drives (not me, due to cost; again, they may be very good, but why spend a lot more for a drive, when here in UK i can order for instance, the LG 4167B for £32.00)

In my experience Lite_on/Sony love TY and Verbatim Datalifeplus, which are pretty much the only media i buy

cheers ears. that made me realise i missed a point as per usual. I was saying how Sony's are usually rebadged Liteys, well that's a'changing with the Sony DRU-810 as that's a rebadged Benq 1640. (haven't used Benq but always read good things about them. i also don't know if going forward Sony will only be rebadged Benq's or if they will also continue with Litey's too). it's all very confusing.

Plextor were the first decent CD reader i had, i think the model was TS32Tsi or something - it was basically a 32-speed SCSI drive, very expensive at the time but very nice. That was too many years ago!, but these days there's so much choice at reasonable prices i personally think there's no need to spend more on Plextor. However i respect the other guys' opinions etc and i'm confident from reading their stuff that those drives are worth the money (just not my money!)

I do know that some reviews on the BenQ are awesome, however, looking @ more options and other burners that make the TY's worth their every cent.

I will most definately read all the inputs on burners.
I truly believe that the TY's deserve a burner that understands its data life span and its quality.
I'll spend what it takes to get the best, trust me I have been "burned" with 2nd hand opinions elsewhere and I will put my money now where my "media" is.
I have coasters enough to make a road to hell with these "memo" and couple other brands i choose not to mention.
thanks again

Guys its not the burner it is the disks, TY's burn well on all drives. I have a Lite-on, Plextor, Benq, Hp litescribe, cruddy BTC and an old NEC 1300a which is not a dl and all of them burn TY's beautifully.

I own the LteOn 1693S and the Pioneer 109. Pioneer gives the better burn and booktypes with the Buffalo firmware... The Litey has more utilities, though... For the price you will pay for a Plextor, do like me and get one of each.... BTW, both of mine are external... Less than $85 each...

guess the bottom line here is "all about the TYs" :) i have 2 Sony's, 2 Liteons, Pioneer, Nec, Benq, and cheapo Optorites...all of which burn TYs just fine at whichever speed just like arniebear stated, i have never owned a Plextor, but i KNOW they are very very good burners as my friends that have them are extremely happy with them~ :)

so, it comes down to YOUR budget, all my burners appreciate the good quality of TYs, i personally don't burn my 8x rated TYs slower than @8x anyways, but, that is just MY preference...good luck deciding~

Great comments, looks like I will be able to make a sound decision on the burner itself, I do agree it is the burner that makes the difference, since things are always changing everyday in regards to the burners, I truly believe that the TY's deserve only the best and price seriously is no problem, I just figured that if it fits the best it will be burned by the best regardless of the price.
I have burned off my LG 815S external Im ok since it has burned some good data's for me, but I donated all my memosux's to the firing range and pulled the trigger on the TY's.

Im so excited my Ty's are on it's way.....just gotta make it on my burner.

kudos to the media & burner guru's! :P

creaky, I just want to say this: I personally own an LG 4167B, Retail. I also own an LG 4163B, and an LG 4160B, all Retail. The 4167B Really Burns Excellent!!! I know very well that there are MANY Great Burners out there. I am very sure the BenQ drives are Great. But I'm a Guy that uses what I know works & lasts. LG has that for Me. I Love the 4267B! LGs latest Multi-Format Drive. The 4167B booktypes all but DVD+RW discs, but.....Who uses those anyway? I know that DVD-Rs are not Booktypeable. All I am saying is LG has an Excellent drive in their Newer GSA-4163B & GSA-4167B. I would NEVER knock anyone's drive. I will tell what I know from My experiences over these years. LG has "Rock Solid" DVD Writers & DVD Readers.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

@mistyguam

there ya go~ try to absorb all the great info the other members and myself have given you, i am SURE you will make a good decision on your burner...despite what burner you end up going with, i can pretty much "SAFELY" say i've had more experience using Taiyo Yuden discs than everyone here, so i can PERSONALLY attest to the great quality of the media you just purchased...THOUSANDS of burns later on TY and i am STILL a happy camper~ :)

best of luck, regardless of WHATEVER burner you go with, when you're using the "GOOD STUFF", your backups will be great~ :)
