what speed did you burn at? What media are you using?
Sounds like bad media.

Could be the blank media...could be the burner...could be the stand alone player.
Try different brand media like: Verbatim DataLife Plus, TY.
Check your firmware.
Make sure your standalone player supports the format you are trying to use (+R/-R).

Is the skipping issues while you view them on a stand alone or on your PC?
Phillips likes to throw in a lot of cmags on their plus format. The only dash phillips I could locate were dash 8x,and they are definitely cmags! Definitely try some better media.
I'm not sure of what programs you are using on the dvd backup process.I'd like to know the MID code from those phillips.Use this free handy tool to ID those discs:

After ruling out media quality. Many other things could be the culprit. Here's the most likely:
Too Fast burn.
Multitasking during encoding
Dirty laser lens
HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!

I bought a 50pk of Maxell's made in Japan and have burned about 40 of them so far without a single coaster. I burn at 4x and use dvddecrypter and dvdshrink. I know that because of this forum and threads about media I do look at where the media is made before making my decision to purchase. Thanks Creaky!

Try setting to 4x, it works better for questionable media. Make sure your firmware is up to date on your burner this will help in media and burn speed recognition.

Lbizkit: Cmags are most likely going to be the manufacturers of those HP and memosux. Now the khypermedia, hell they may even be made by worse manufacturers than cmags!
Tdk dash format should be decent.Their plus format also comtains many cmags.
If you want some really good Ritek-g05 media, check out office depot's own brand name of dash 8x media. They've been coding as riteks. The Office Depot +8x media that I purchased have ID'd as Ritek-R03. Very good media for 25-30 cents apiece when on sale.I know the 50 and 100 pack spindles are riteks.
The sony dash 1x-8x are very sweet,so are the Japanese maxell dash 8x gold tops. The japanese sony/fuji/and maxells are all very good. There's even some tys thrown into them on those fuji dash 8x.

You also may want to check your player, I have a Philips DVD recorder that has trouble playing a lot of burned DVD's but have no trouble with them on my Apex or any of my computer drives.
Philips DVD players are the worse as far as I'm concerned, I've owned 2 and will never own another. Nothing but a headache.

People have mentioned speed of burn, try 4 speed. They mentioned media, TY, RiData, and Verbatim are all good. One thing not mentioned is once you start with the shrink process, make sure internet connection is disconnected and that you not touch the puter untill the burn process is complete. The encoding part takes every inch of processor time that it can get and early on I had same problem you do and it was because I was trying to multi-task. Just one more thing that could be causing it. RCCola, Toot Toot

Here is a place to start, type in your media and it will give the mfr and reviews on the media
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
Your Dad has good taste, Maxell are usually very good media and recommended along with Sony, Verbatim and Fuji. TDK can be okay sometimes but not always they have been a little inconsistent lately. As I stated above check the firmware on your burner and make sure it is up to date it will help in media and burn speed recognition.

@RCCola - i multitask during encodig/ripping etc, and in like 2000 movies not one has ripped badly. as to the burning phase - multitasking during that is a huge no no - that's when i've wrecked discs by not sticking to my own rules of stepping away from pc during the burn
