ERROR: Device Not Ready
unable to recover TOC

Is this a DVD error or DVD Burner Error?

I take it that this is from DVD Decrypter. This sounds like a badly scratched, and or badly pressed original disc.

TOC = table of content?

[18:31:02] ERROR : Unable To Initialize Disc In Time : Not ready - Logical unit not ready [02/04/01]

is it my dvd burner or dvd?

@mjcollins
2 reasons that I know of would be bad/dirty disc - like alkohol said or you're not in DMA mode -check that. Do you have another drive you can try this disc in? Have you tried a different disc to burn to? What brand of discs are you using?

Sony - I am using Nero - how do I make sure I am not in the DMA mode?

I have tried a handful of discs and cleaned them with rubbing alcohol.

Sony should be good. I'd ask for the manufacturer id but you can't get identifer to load it either :)
Here's a link to make sure your in DMA mode:

You wouldn't by chance have a failed Nero log you could post?
What's the make and model of your drive? It's not sounding to good here on it being a media thing.

I checked the DMA settings on primary IDE Channell

The current transfer mode is PIO

Transfer MOde- DMA if available

The secondary IDE Channel

The current transfer mode is DMA

Transfer MOde- DMA if available

will reboot and see if that changes it - will post outcome

alright changed everything to DMA settings WOO HOO

but this is the error from DVD Identifier

[21:40:21] ERROR : Unable To Initialize Disc In Time : Medium error - Unable to read TOC, PMA or subcode [03/57/00]

It takes quite a while to get a response from Nero. I am pretty sure my media is okay I just think I have a crappy burner. I just bought one to get into burning and then found out I would be doing it everyday. I have burned quite a few movies but it just stopped working all of sudden and I know you can get bad runs on DVDs

I don't think you have a media problem. If the drive was new it should last you for awhile. One drive I use is over a year old and I've done at least a couple hundred on it. The error you get is an atapi error - by uninstalling and rebooting it would have forced windows to reinstall the drivers which may have corrected this error. Okay so that didn't work - more things to try - check your power supply, check you ide cables to make sure their attached correctly, and last but not least make sure your firmware is up to date.
What's the make and model of your drive?

well, seems like your burner is on it's way out my friend...might be time to get a new one...if you are having problems with Genuine Taiyo Yudens, at least for ME, that would be a clear indication that my drive is dying...

and since you say you have the newest firmware...TU56 from:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1971

then all the fingers point to getting a new drive...perhaps yours was one in a "bad batch" of production? you never know, i had an Optorite 12x as my 1st dvd burner, it lasted for a little while, less than 100 burns later, it died...sent it in for a RMA, got replacement, same thing only after 2 months this time...i think Optorites are ALL "bad batches" LOL~ :)

good luck~

Totally willing to get a new burner - any recommendations?

That is what I get for not researching my first purchase.

well, i have 6 different burners in my arsenal for dvd burning, but you will get MANY differnt opinions as to "which is the best" blah blah blah...

i have personally had a lot of success with Liteon burners, Pioneers, NECs, Sonys, and now my newest addition to the family, the Benq 1640~ :)

i have the Liteon SOHW-1633S & SOHW-1693S, had the older model for well over a year, great drive, does everything i want it to, the newer one for almost 2 months, so far so good too :)

the pioneer dvr-109 i have uses hacked firmware so i can booktype, but it is my FASTEST burner to date...

i have the older NEC -3520a, it is sturdy, solid burns and works well on my 2nd computer...

and my Sonys...have the dru-710a (which is in fact a rebadged Liteon 1633S) for almost 2 years now, well over 1,000 burns already on it and it STILL ticking~ :) *knocks on wood*

i JUST got the newest Benq and only have had a FEW burns so far, but it's GREAT~:)

never owned a Plextor, but, i KNOW it's highly regarded as the "king of burners"...might try one later down the road, if need be~

that's just what I have...others will definitely offer you MORE choices, but i am PRETTY fluent with any of the aforementioned drives that i currently OWN...i also had some Optorite (CRAP) drives in the very beginning...i DO NOT recommend them AT ALL~

do a lil research and you should be good~

docTY~

Sony 700, Litey 1693S (if this one booktypes!) and before those i had an Optorite something-or-other.

The Optorite was crap (that taught me to buy a name i'd never heard of before), it wouldn't even read pressed dvd-rom discs from new - it got swapped for the Sony 700 which managed about 2000 burns and got swapped last week for a 1693S which was faulty so today swapped for another 1693S. Oh and last night i used the new LG 4167B - very nice drive. i've no room for more drives, otherwise i'd probably just buy another few Sony/Litey/LG drives

@creaky

our experience with drives is fairly close...natural succession...Optorite-->Sony--->Liteon~ :)

while i have a few other ones with me, i have yet to try the LG that you just got...let me know how it goes for you...with so many manufacturers out there...the choices are endless~ :)

good day to you buddy~

@kivory666

I have only used the LG GSA 4163B and love it, but I am a relatively new comer to the dvd burn world. My backups are great with this burner though.

in researching some of these - they look to be internal drives.

Any suggestions for external?
