I just bought a pack of phillips dvdrs and they dont play games very well on my ps2. I am using swapmagic and it gets past the first screen but starts skipping as its loading or gets stuck at a loading screen. although the discs dont have problems with movies. Ive had good experiences with LG,Memorex,Fujifilm, and once in a while Sony.Bad experiences with maxell and now phillips, movies and games. Are there any other reliable discs out there that I havent named yet. Please help. Also I am looking for a new dvd burner any reccomendations. I have a optorite dvd burner it was only $65 it amazingly works really good.It burns like a champ so if any of you want a good cheap burner optorite is the way to go. also thanks to all that do reply.

For media try Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or Ritek DVD-R's. There is no universal best media, just some are more compatible with certain burner's. I too am in the market for a burner and will likely settle on a Sony DRU800A. I have been told by knowledgable people they work well. Liteon's are also rated well. If budget is an issue, several members have reported good success with BenQ. You can pick them up for around $35 or so. Try burning your game at slightly faster speed. Start at 1x, 2x, then 4x. In some rare instances it may be necessary to burn at 8x or so.

Are they Philips -R or +R and what speed?
I use Philips 8X DVD-R for all my games and have great success
I tried the +R Philips 8X and did not have good results
But the +R work great for movies so i use them for that.
Don't buy Memorex for game, you will not get good results.
If you have 8X speed DVD's try burning them at 4X

Tokijin, The Sony burner is a great choice. It may cost you
a few extra $$$ but will be worth it. I have been using the
old DRU-700A for a few years now with great success rate.
In fact it is 100%, the only failures i have are one's that
needed to be rebuilt. But now with the slim and DMS4 Pro i
don't have that problem because nothing needs to be rebuilt.
Circuit City has them on sale right now if you have any near you

$69.99 after $10 instant savings and $30 mail in rebate.

i have heard that if you get Fuji or Sony that you
have to make sure they say made in Japan or they are just
no good. Have not used them myself to test that theory.

Thanks you guys for the info. also I have made a decision on a burner its gonna be a Plextor 716a,716sa or a 740 they are all on sale at Frys. Ive heard really good things about it. My buddy has one and has not made a coaster yet. Another question, where do i buy those taiyo yudens from? are they pricey? Everybody says really good thing about them but I never heard of em.

I've noticed that when on the Browser Screen of the PS2 when you press the triangle button you're able to scroll to an option that says somethign to the effect of Drive Read speed, If your games are having a problem loading try changing it from standard to Fast and see if that helps.. I've noticed it helps on some games that I've backed up even on good media at 2x or 4x ...

Anyone know if there is a way for you to save this setting so your PS2 will read at a fast speed all the time so you don't have to reset it every so often?

No. As far as I know you have to change the Drive Speed everytime you turn your PS2 on.

I agree, but in some rare instances adjusting laser speed helps certain games run better. Never come across it personally, just saw it in a couple old posts.
