I have a version7 PS2 that has been working fine. Just today I was watching a DVD and when I hit R1 on the joypad to go to the next chapter the ps2 has been make a grinding noise. So no whenever I turn on the PS2 it makes the gridning noise and when I hit eject, it grinds for 2 seconds and the tray pops out.
When I insert any dvd or game, I get the gridning noise and the menu says it still trying to read the data and it continues to grind and nothing loads.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thankz

I got this from the PS2 Repair Guide
It's a Diagnostics thing...
In the Main Menu screen of the PS2 with no Disc inserted
Press the Triangle button
Select Console from the top using the up directional buttons & press the Triangle button
Select On using the up & down directional buttons & press the X button
Insert a Disc & hopefully the diagnosis will start.

I think this maybe a lubrication problem... the PS2 lasers run on a lubricated arm & if this were to dry out it could cause grinding other thing it could be is that the discs aren't seated properly or are wobbling when being played.

Hope this helps

I have this problem as well......forunately my ps2 is still covered by my warranty, so im gonna take it back for a fix/swap...... it's odd though. It started doing it after I have been using the swap trick for a good while. Even though I've always been delicate and easy on the system especially when swapping. It'd still be nice to know what was causing the problem so that i can fix it if it happens again. My guess is it's the tray. It sounds like the laser is moving back and forth in fury and not being able to read anything. And it sounds like the sides were replaced with cheese grinders in the process..... :( ....i tried the diagnostic but no dice......same problem.

If you can't baffle them with brilliance, confuse them with bullshit
