Is anyone else having problems with the Fujifilm Ritek R03's made in Taiwan?

I bought a spindle the other day for $32.99 CAD at Futureshop.ca. Bring them home check them out and burn something using NVE3. reads fine in the DVD-ROM in my computer but my DVD player says incompatible. So I copied over what was on the Fuji disc to a Dynex Disc using nero, just did a straight copy over. The Dynex disc reads in my DVD player.... WTH

Anyone else experiencing this? or did i just get a bad batch?

ArCaine,

I recall you said you have a Liteon burner, did you use the booktype utility?
Change your +r's to dvd-rom, this in most cases, should take care of the compatibility issue. What is the make of your DVD player? Check here:

@ArCaine hi :)
if they are indeed RITEK-R03 they are top class media
thats all i use now, booktyped -rom as mackdl has stated
no coasters.. no compatibility problems
both my burners are liteon and i never burn over 4x speed
seeing as i'm paranoid (and time doesn't bother me to much )i usually burn at 2.4x

http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_utility.htm

the first one "booktype135.zip", that is ALL you need~ :)

i use this same utility on both my liteons SOHW-1633S & SOHW-1693S~

hope that gets you going...

booktyping/bitsetting WILL NOT interfere with any other formats of media, the actual "change" only takes place if your drive recognizes a DVD+R format disc and you instruct it (using the booktype utility) to change it to dvd-rom, DVD-R and other formats remain unchanged :)

good luck~

?????????

well, when you "booktype" the R03s from DVD+R to dvd-rom, this will make the disc MORE compatible with your stand alone dvd player as it will "see it" as a dvd-rom disc (which is THE most compatible format: compatibility chart from MOST compatible to least: dvd-rom, DVD-R, dvd+r) in that order~ :)

give it a try using the bitsetting utility from above, i'm sorry if i confused you further because my wording was unclear~ :)

ArCaine:

I guess simply put, when you change the booktype you are instructing your drive to write in a universal language (dvd-rom)that is understood by other players. Hollywood dvds are dvd-rom, and that is why they play in all players.

Here is your manual for booktyping:

http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/Zip/BookTypeManual_e.pdf

This is your download page for your booktype utility tool: BookType135.ZIP

Thanx guys for explaining it :D i will most definately try that on my next R03 disc i burn :D

the way i understand it, is that i should bookset ALL dvd media i plan on burning to, no matter of brand? so that my dvd player will recognize them as dvd-rom and not as DVD+R. that is correct?

Yes, you will want to change all your "+" media to dvd-rom. (+R, +RW, +RDL. Not sure if they make +RW DL?) You can NOT change "-" media. This will address problems with "Hey, it plays in mine, but not in my friend's, why not?" or "it plays on my computer but not on my main dvd player".

I do not have your drive, mine is a Liteon 451S. With the booktype changed to dvd-rom, I have had only a handful of backups that would not read in tabletop dvd players. These were a Sony and Toshiba, and very picky players to begin with. Most likely if I authored them differently, they would play. I don't think it had anything to do with the booktyping.

Ok, got a new problem, when i try to bookset my R03's to DVD+ROM, it says "F/W Not Support!", and my firmware is BPSA. I have downloaded the BS0S F/W update from http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm

"No matched drive detected!
This Utility is only for LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S Drive.

Detected drives:
3-0-0-0 E:LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-16332 BPSA"

WTH... can sumone help my update my firmware please :)

ArCaine,

This is really beyond my capabilities to help you. I did find this on Lite-on's site:

http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_service/discussion/show.asp...

Perhaps someone here with your burner can help. You may even have to go to a different forum, that specializes with Lite-on drives.

Good Luck

Check the software that came with your drive, it may be there. Also, you could try DvdInfoPro and see if you can use the booktype utility there. My LG, which supports booktyping, does not have a specific tool, I have to use DvdInfoPro to set the booktype.

Well DvdInfoPro says my drive doesnt support bitsetting, and it looks like the BPSA firmware i have is OEM so i am going to contact my vendor to see if they can do anything about it. :)

EDIT: It looks like HP/Compaq has a BPSD firmware available that was produced in august. hopefully it will work :D
