I have a similiar set up. I have one 80 gb SATA hdd and one 300 gb SATA hdd. The 80 gb hdd is partitioned into 2 40 gb hdd's. I use one or drive C: to store my os and program files on. I use one or drive D: to store the VIDEO T_S folders on after I have edited them with dvdremake and so it is also the sorce drive for rb/cce. I use the 300 gb hdd or drive E: to store the original folders from dvd decrypter and also for the working and target folders for rb/cce. I work from one drive to the other and never get into the partition with my os and program files while doing video work. Here is what my status log looks like.

i do like reading up (a little) on stuff like RB but i just have don't have the time to progress it. but that's just an excuse really cus i imagine it's dead easy, so my main concern is the encoding time or whatever, i just can't be doing with all that time it takes, plus i don't sleep a lot so i still wouldn't get much encoding done!, but i take heed of all the info re quality etc. i do watch my Shrink movies on a 28" tv from time to time and they're more than good enough for me. Even if i get a cinema-sized tv i suspect i'll be happy enough with the quality of Shrink but that's just me. have a good day all..

I use both RB w/CCE and Shrink, quality differences vary , but i still like shrink the best hence its the fastest. the only movie i back up with RB so far was AVP , quality was real nice but the encoding time took several hours since i use a 4 pass encode on CCE.

F...Dude, from what I read about RB.... anything over 3 passes isn't worth it! Just passing on what I heard!

@IHoe

I hear the same in respect to the passes and with CCE Basic you can only do two passes anyway, it is only with 2000.00 program you can do more.

:) Mort, i WILL have to consider jumping on your bandwagon, i don't question or doubt that RB/CCE is by far the BEST quality of video by ANY of the programs out there, but, while my reasons for not "trying" it is different than creakys, at this point in time due to time constraints, (and the wife), i can not have my computer tied up encoding even while i am at work~ :)

might sound silly to you, but, my wife refuses to use my "2nd computer" for all her internet browsing/word processing/shopping/etc/etc as she consider's my 2nd system "too slow", so, naturally, she wants to use my "main rig"... 3.4ghz Extreme Edition-socket 478 chipset, NOT PCI, 4 gigs of ram, internet networked wirelessly for up to 8mbps/downloads (my 2nd computer will CAP OUT at 5mbps) LOL, geforce 6800 ultra, AGP, not pci-e, etc..etc...also, she likes the dual 24" LCDs on my main rig over my "dinky by comparison 20" widescreen on the 2nd comp.) :)

so, this dilemna is NOT about IF i want to use/try RB/CCE or not, because i MOST CERTAINLY DO, it's more about getting bi7ch slapped if i don't comply w/ HER needs when she's on the computer... :(

wives can be a blessing at times and satan's hell-spawn during "other times", but, i will have to make due with what i can manage to "get done" while she does some shopping online~:)

i have a 50" HDTV panasonic plasma (i build high end computers as a hobby and also do custom home theater installs for myself, friends, and family in my spare time) so, with my job being on call for 72 hours at a time, you can imagine i get VERY little sleep each day, but i gotta do what i gotta do.

i'm sure RB/CCE would produce the best picture quality, BUT, with the time i "have" or "have not" depending on how you look at it, it's just not feasible at this point in time~ :)

i will have to see if there is someway i can get around this, perhaps build a 3rd computer used solely for RB/CCE to be left on 24/7? hmmm...might be an option...

good day to you all~ burn on my friends...sorry about my super condensed life story~ LOL

@the Doc

You can batch process with RB and set it up to do it at night while you sleep. I did 3 movies that way it worked out very well.

Also didn't notice too much of a difference when I put the folders on different drives! averaged from 78 mins to 160 mins

Doc,

Looks like it's time for you to build a state of the art P4 4.0 ghz, top of the line AMD, or dual core pc and give that slow little P4 3.4 ghz machine to the wifey. hehe :~)

Yea i guess i went a little overkill when using CCE prolly a 2 pass would be good enough. One question however since were talking about back up quality, Does anyone use the quality enhancements in DVD Shrink? never tried any of them before. But then again i doubt it would give CCE a run for its money.

I used to use the quality enhancements in Shrink a lot before I started using RB. They do make a difference for highly compressed movies, but they are slow and if you are going to invest that much time you might as well use RB. You can get the same quality enhancements in Nero Recode you just have to go to the regedit and change the value, which is a pain, but then Recode is much faster than Shrink and does not use as much of your CPU. Using the Max Smooth on a large movie like LOTR with Shrink took me over an hour to transcode.
