. What do they do?
Basically, Games are on pressed discs, unlike movies, and
they have an area on them that no DVD Burner can copy. The mod is needed to trick the PS2 into thinking it is an original disc.
some mods are used, like a flip top, to stop the PS2 from resetting
when you swap discs, if you use the regular eject button or flip
top the slim has, ite resets every time you open it.
2. Where the hell do they go?
depends on which mod you get. Swap Magic is a disc which
you use with and aftermarket flip top that you buy. these
will allow you to play back up games. Then there are
mod chips which are soldered onto the PS2 motherboard
3. where do I get the wires to solder them?\
If you buy a mod chip and it did not come with the wires you can look for an install kit like this one
http://modchip.ca/store/home.php?cat=260 but any good store should send the mod chip with wires
4. which ones are good to buy??? $$$ = no problem
Mod chips are the very best, but more expensive innitially
The good ones (DMS4 or Matrix Infinity) will play any type of game
There is no swapping, no rebuilding games, nothing else needed.
and they have flash upgrades that you get for free when they want to add new features to the chip. But you can not play back up games online with a chip.
Swap Magic and a flip top are a bit cheaper and you can play back
up games online. All games that you want to play online have to be patched for online play for any mod your choose. There are some games that you will have to rebuild to use with swp magic, and it is a lot harder to use a cheat disc with swap magic than with a
mod chip. And if they want to add new features to Swap Magic then
you either have to do without them or buy a new set of discs.
nelswick
even if you patch it you would still have to disable the chip
in order to play online, so with the chip disabled you could
not load the back up.
that is what i was getting at.
you would need a mod chip, swap magic and a flip top.
so if you play online you are better off just not getting
the mod chip at all.
And yes, mostly mods are just so you can play back ups
they also have things that allow you to play multi region games
on your system, and some mod chips have hard drive support so
that you can load games from it without a seperate program
like HD loader. There are also other uses for loading ELF files
and homebrew applications, but i do not have enough knowledge
about those to know what they are for.

You do not have to disable your chip to play backups online if they are patched. That's half the point of patching them. You have to disable your chip for originals.
I was told that the sites will detect your chip as a cheat device
and will not allow you to connect? And that is why you had
to disable it to play any games online, backup or original.
Is that not true?
If that is not true than i stand corrected and appologize.
But i have read that on many sites.
Xbox must have a tighter hold on their people
damn Microsoft
Due to Xbox live i don't think you can play anything online with a chip. Although i have not tried it yet.
I am just not in the mood to get my a$$ whooped in a game
from across the globe.
