After reading this forum for about a month now I have found some good helpful info. Alot of my backups would freeze either at intro or at some point in the game. I tried cleaning the laser, different copying programs, rebuilding, and differnet media. The one the that is important is using the best possible media. I have found Tayao Yuden to be the best. I was using TDK, Ritek, and Staples brand DVD-R and would get freeze issues. I have none so far with the TY discs. My posting rank may say I am a newbie but I have been backing games up since about 1997 for psx, dreamcast and now ps2. Also rebuilding is not necessary for any games except for the dozen or so DVD9 games like God of War. Doing so will not make any diffenerce in a game that is less than 4.38 gb. My backu settup for DVD5 games (up to 4.38 gb) is:

DVD decryptor to rip and burn
Tayao Yuden 8x DVD-R
NEC 3250 burner
Swap magic 3.6
Ps2 Version 1 USA

Nothing fancy folks just stick with Tayao Yuden as it is regarded as the highest quality media.

glad you found a brand that works well with your system but, most people have no problems with TDK, or ritek I've even known of people who said princo were great (when we all know they're very shitty). The fact that your ps2 is a v1 could have something to do something with it as with the older versions the lasers were very picky. Also, burning speed could have been a factor with the other media brands on your system. Although I do agree with you that Taiyo yuden are high quality but, you also gotta pay a lot extra for that little bit of extra quality.

I dont think paying $30 for a 50 pack of TY is what I would call expensive. Also I have tried these discs in versino 3, 7 and pstwo console with same results. I keep my burns at 4x. I have used 2 differnt burners and 3 different programs. 90% of the problems on this forum with people havign games freeze or screen go black is most likly due to bad media. TDK and Ritek are good brands but the most recent blanks I have gotten give me proplems with my games and my DVDs. Supermediastore.com and Allmediaoutlet.com sell Tayao Yuden 50 packs for about $30 shipped. I definetly think the increase in quality is worth it. If people go with good brands then most of these questions would not be asked. Just trying to share what has worked for me. Maybe you have luck with othere brands....I had great results with Ritek DVDs from 2 years ago.. not one coaster from a 100 pack I bought. Cant say the same for a 50 pack i bought in teh begginning of this year.

All I am saying is try to get your hand on some TY discs if you guys are having these freezing/black scrren problems after booting your backups.

don't forget freezing/skipping issues are also sometimes cause by burning speeds. but, having said that I think in your case you probably got some bad ritek G05 'cause I remember when those first came out a lot of people were having problems with them.
