I have purchased two separate lots of Maxell so far, and have had great luck with both, producing 0 coasters. I have noticed however differing ID's on the lots and wonder which would be considered superior.
Made in Japan - Maxell 4.7g (Maxell-002-00) (50pak)
Made in Tiawan - Maxell 4.7g (Ritek-R03-02) (25pak)
@kivory666 would you have a breakdown of the id's?
I appreciate all comments.

however, at least with MY experience with Maxell, i can only comment on 2 kinds that i have used...which would be the 8x DVD-R MADE IN JAPAN ones and the 8x DVD+R MADE IN JAPAN again...BOTH are EXCELLENT quality media and i've had VERY good success with them (only 100 pack each, so, my experience is NOT THAT MUCH) :)
i am familiar with the media ID codes on the made in taiwans and the Riteks are also very good, however, i have ONLY used the Ritek G05s (which were Ritek Ridata branded by the way) in the 8x DVD-R flavor extensively...those are VERY good from personal experience :)
but, onto the list~ :) i won't do my usual "comments" per media ID as i normally would, ONLY because i do NOT have experience with ALL the formats and the speeds, i will not pass judgement on stuff i have NEVER used before :)
Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB MXL RG01.... 2x
Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB MXL RG02.... 4x
Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB MXL RG03.... 8x (these are the ones that are MADE IN JAPAN that i HAVE used, high quality, flawless backups)
Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB RITEKG03.... 1x
Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB RITEKG04.... 4x
Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB RITEKG05.... 8x (again, these are MADE IN TAIWAN, but have used about 500+ with this same media ID w/ great results)
Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB TYG01....... 4x (Taiyo Yuden baby! nuff said, MADE IN JAPAN, naturally as ALL TYs are)
Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB MAXELL..001 4x
Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB MAXELL..002 8x (the other of the 2 Maxell flavors MADE IN JAPAN that i have used, this one is equally as good as the 8x DVD+R format, maxell's own stuff)
Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB PHILIPS.C16 16x (ok OUCH, ANYTHING that is PHILIPS coded will SUCK...crap media alert~!)
Maxell DVD+R 8.5GB RICOHJPND00 2.4x (haven't tried it yet, but should be good if the consistency is as good as the single layer discs w/ RICOHJPN coding-these are made in taiwan)
Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB RICOHJPNR01 4x (made in taiwan, never tried)
Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB RICOHJPNR02 8x (made in taiwan again, never tried)
Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB RITEK...R02 4x (my buddy gurnard will like these)
Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB RITEK...R03 8x (again, gurnard loves these, made in taiwan, but with Riteks-assuming you like them, as i do- this will prove to be a good buy)
Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB YUDEN000T01 4x (made in japan, the 1st of the Taiyo Yuden -YUDEN000T0x series, i use the 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02 with FLAWLESS RESULTS and just an insider's tip...the YUDEN000T03 (16x DVD+R by Taiyo Yuden will be out and available early next year..if there is no delays :P)
Maxell DVD+RW 4.7GB MCC.....A01 2.4x (don't use DVD+RW much, but since this is MCC, i can only ASSUME it's pretty good? never tried it, so, no concrete comment)
Maxell DVD+RW 4.7GB PHILIPS.041 4x (there is the PHILIPS again, CRAP~!)
Maxell DVD+RW 4.7GB RICOHJPNW11 4x (should be ok, once again, never tried it before)
ok that is the complete list,...i didn't include the dvd-ram format as i have absolutely NO experience with that format as NONE of my drives are even capable of burning onto them~ :)
whew~ that is a pretty extensive list if i do say so myself...hope that sheds some light for you 9mmruger1~ :)

I too have used those Maxell R03's and they are great, and the burned disk tested out as excellent on my Plex Scan.

9mmruger1: I'll take both those maxell MID codes anyday! Great media,and they both perform just as well as my Yuden000-T02 and MCC-003!
BTW: On those maxell riteks: You can get the same Ritek-R03 MID code on the Office Depot brand +8x 100 pack spindles. The last sale there,they were 25 cents each! I'm waiting for their next buy 1/get 2 free sale.

as do i, my office depot recently closed down and the nearest one now is like 20-25 miles away, not saying that is far, BUT, with the price of gas and LA traffic, no thanks~ i'll wait for Staples to have Fuji 30 packs (colored) on sale again~ :) waiting for Taiyo Yudens is well worth it, at least to me it is~ :)

I know what you mean about gas it is so painful to go to the pump. The nearest Office Depot to me is about 90 miles, not worth gas to save a few pennies.

Great information. We have an Office Depot in Kalamazoo. I am only about 10 miles from it. I wonder if all Office Depot brands in all stores is the Ritek. I would hate to buy 100 memosux! I wonder if they will let me test them there. Is there any configeration on the packaging that I should look for?

Catfreak turned me onto those Office depot 8xs. According to catfreak,all their 8x media is made by ritek: Dash 8x Ritek-g05 and Ritek-R03 on the OD Plus 8x. I only purchase plus format and my last 2 trips turned out to be riteks in the 50 and 100 pack spindles!
28 cents each the last purchase.Their last sale was buy 1 spindle of 100 and get 2 free spindles.That came out to around 25 cents each.Staples happened to have fuji tys on sale for 30 cents each so I spent my wad there instead of the 30 minute trip to my nearest OD.

I just got rid of my wife! Divorce was final yesterday morning! I don't know what I am going to do.Nobody to piss me off any more, LMFAO! I even got my papers at work last night for going back to day shift!!! 16 years on the off shift, UGGH!
I've got to buy some lottery tickets today with the way my luck is running! I may just hit that megamillions jackpot.
