Gentlemen: I am trying to backup a movie that is not encrypted. I thought that this would get by "DVD Shrink" - not so?? I almost get the movies completed and (several Tries) I get the familiar block "DVD Shrink has encountered and error and cannot continue Programing error - exception occurred"? What is this saying? What programming error? When I delete the files to start again the same files are there " Video TS, VTS 01-0, VTS 01-1, VTS 01-2, VTS 01-3, and VTS 01-4"... How can I beat this? I haven't gotten The"decryption" program to function correctly at all so far - so - any suggestions???????????
Thanks ronnies

ronnies,
If I am not mistaken that error means it want you to use DVDDecrypter and rip all of the files to HD. That is the workaround at the Shrink site. I understand you stated there is no encryption.
Is this error happening on the read or the encode of the disk?
If the movie is a DVD-5 then use DVDDecrypter Mode->.iso read and then Mode >iso write

As Car.Mike said you don't even need to use DVD Shrink with a DVD-5, all you need is DVD Decrypter.

See my sig.

Hello, thanks for your quick and informative reply. The "sign" appears near the end of the "encode". How do I know if I have a "DVD-5" movie? Is it that simple running "DVD Decrypter"? Do I just follow the steps in the "Decrypter" I usually mess this up pretty good - any definitive step sequence, would be truly appreciated - whatever you come up with. Sincerely ronnies

ronnies,
Try the below to see if it works:

1. From the "Mode" menu, select "ISO" > "Read".

2. Put DVD-5 movie( if this is a DVD-5) disc in drive.

3. Notice where DVDDecrypter is going to save the file.

4. Click the big "Decrypt" button.

5. After it finishes reading now take the DVD-5 movie disc out of the drive.

6. Go to "Mode" > select "ISO" > "Write".

7. Put a blank disc in your DVD burner.

8. Click the little folder icon - "Browse for source file" - and select the MDS file created for you as part of the steps above.

9. Click the big 'Write' button.

To figure out if you have a DVD-5 or DVD-9 put the movie into the DVD-Rom or burner drive and right click it and go to proprieties. It will list the size. If it is over 4.58GB ( take 4.7gb and divide by 1024 and then that is the size)then it is a DVD-9.

You stated these are not encrypted. Are they by chance already burned/copies of movie dvds?? If this is the case then your problem may be the way the first copy was burned or the type/brand blank media they were burned on. If they are original purchased dvds that are not encrypted then make very sure they are clean and damage/scratch free.

Hello "Car.Mike" and "Jery"
I truly appreciate your time and effort. Before I read this current thread, I tried "Scuba Pete's" depictation of how to use "DVD Decrypter" and "DVD Shrink". I tell ya guys that analyses just about blew my mind. I now have "The Movie" ( A rented one)resting in it's decrypted state in a "TS" folder. I tried to burn it to my DVD burner but once again - The BOX came up and stated that I couln't do it...(same blurb as above". I guess you can tell my utter frustration in my writing. The size of the movie, following "Jerrys" formula - well It says it's 5.73GB. The time on the movies is 80min??
Usually I can run this right thru with DVD Shrink - no problem. Don't know if it's been copied prior or not. Anyhow I'm now going to torture my mind and try "Car Mikes" suggestions??? If I can do anything with the already encrypted files (ie) getting them to so the DVD Burner please let me know. Right now it's just taking up space. I have 37000 GB left. ANY suggestions - give me a shout.
This is definitely not a walk in the park for me. ronnies

Is there anything more to the error message, like usually it will say "Programming error - Exception occurred/Invalid handle or
Programming error - Exception occurred/The Parameter is incorrect".

Hi No there is no more other words to the message other than what is written above. Car.Mike, I am so close with your method that you sent me BUT when I brought up the folder where the movie was sent through "Browse" there was no way that I could get the "Write" button to activate? Everything was going so well up to that point...Mercy, mercy, mercy... I could not get the "source file" (the movie after it was decrypted) into any place were it could be activated by the DVD burner????? To reiterate- after I "browsed for the Source" abd selected it - it was there in folder but it over rode my effort to enable "Write" very, very frustrating - I must be one terribly stupid guy - amen ronnies

This is probably a silly question but, have you rebooted your computer and tried again?

No, the files are already on your hard drive. You would just have to open up Nero manually and burn them. That part is easy, here is a guide to help you. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=221453#p...

If you are having trouble navigating to the movie location, you might try creating a folder to put it in so you know where it is. I create a folder for each and every backup in my Documents folder so that I can locate them when I am ready to burn the movie.

This also helps me to know where to go to delete the files when they are no longer needed which gives me back my drive space.

To Anyone: Are there hidden files from using shrink or decrypter that I should be deleting as well?

Good luck.

The only "hidden" files are the "Quick Analysis" files, which are very small. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44906
