I have a bunch of DVD/CDs that I think are bad, but not sure.

How do you determine if a CD is bad -- not new ones, but ones that "may" have been written on -- i.e. from write operations that have aborted and you don't know if anything has been written on them or not.

I know this isn't a software forum, but is there a piece of software that will analyze the DVD and tell me if it is bad (bad recording, already used, written on, etc.).

Thanks.

Try the Test Drive function in Nero and click on the disc quality tab.

Hi there,

VSO Inspector v1.1 can scan your burned media by performing a Sector by Sector Scan, and a file scan to see if is 100% READ error free.

It will also provide you information on your media and your burner.

And it's FREE :)

Thanks for the help -- I just got Nero and didn't realize those functions were there -- but I guess I will have to read the manual to understand what all of this C1 C2 PI Errors, PI Failures mean. Nero seems to "not" recognize some of the discs that I think are bad (i.e. Disc Info contains almost nothing, and the "Start" buttons on the Disc Quality & Disc Scan tabs are grayed out) -- so maybe that is a clue. A good blank disc says Blank. So, I will have to play with it some more, but it may give me what I need.

cougar-

Can't get the download of VSO Inspector to work -- everytime I click on Download, I get a page not found error. Do you think they are still offerring that package.

Thanks for the help guys. I was looking for more of an english message telling me what was on the disc (blank, empty, full, closed, finalized, partially used, bad, etc.) -- but I can make the Nero thing work.

If anyone knows of any other packages out there, let me know (I also need something for my father-in-law -- and he won't have Nero).

Thanks again.

CRC scanning is what i recommend. as much as i like Nero Burning Rom i wouldn't have faith in it's verification feature or any other checking feature that it might have.

I'm not sure what you meant by CRC scanning -- is that a program.

How will that tell me wheather the disk has something on it or not -- and what is on it.

I need to know if anything is on the disc, and hopefully if there is something, it can tell me what it is or if it is any good.

one program (free) i use to do this is dvdinfopro from www.dvdinfopro.com monthly trial).. (make sure to pick the version with adverts). The CRC portion of the program checks for corruption.. that's the bit i've concentrated on

Glad you had good luck with that program -- I didn't.

Someone else recommended that program (for erasing a CD-RW disc).

I installed it and tried to read and erase a CD-RW disc. It totally wiped out my machine. My machine locked up and I couldn't even kill (end task) the darn thing -- it kept coming back, in some sort of kill loop -- like those old porno things you couldn't kill. Couldn't even restart my machine -- had to do a power off.

Tried it again a second time after the startup -- locked up again, but I was able to kill it this time. Except after that, "nothing" else would load -- and again, no restart -- had to do another power off.

Boy, was I ticked off -- so on the next startup, the first thing I did was uninstall. I have no idea what the problem was. OK, sorry, but guess still a little upset by the whole thing.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway -- must be working for some people.

Just wanted you to know I was able to download VSO Inspector. I sent the site a note about my problems and they responded very quickly, with a good link for me to do the download.

I wouldn't say that it gives me what I was looking for, but it does seem to identify a "blank" disc, which is mainly what I was looking for in the first place.

I am under the impression, once a CD-R or DVD-R (for instance) has been written on, no matter how small, then that disc is unusable and can not be used again for writing -- I am correct there, aren't I.

Thanks.

I usually use Nero, although I'm not sure how reliable it is, found some of my burns have a red box at the very end, seems to make no difference when watching the movie, also when my movies have the odd red box it doesn't mean the movie is stuffed ,it is just like a bad 'scene' change when watching it, a few red boxes in a row and you might as well give it the flick but

How do you determine if a DVD is bad?
Scan with Nero CD-DVD Speed, or any CRC scanning engines. And or when you play it on your stnad alone dvd player and it starts to freeze, has distortion, pixelation picture, etc. -- now that is a very very bad disc/burned.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

For CDs, it's a C1/C2 test and for DVDs, it's a PI/PO test. The quick way to check if your CD/DVD is bad is to try and copy all the files over to your hard drive. If you can, it means the files are at least readable/copyable...for the moment. But results will vary because on a not so good DVD player or DVD drive (bad, dusty laser), you might not be able to read the disc or you'll see skipping.

I am still having a problem with this.

I have a CD that the VSO Inspector says is 100% good. Also Nero's CD-DVD Speed says the disc is good and even sees some files out there. But Windows XP doesn't see anything -- and the properties says "0" Used space, "0" Free space -- so is the disc good or bad -- well it's bad as far as I'm concerned because XP can't read it -- regardless of what those other programs say.

I have a DVD (actually several) that I inserted in the disc recorder, when it was expecting a CD -- and the program kicked them out because they were the wrong media (after it had asked me for a "label" and started the burn, but did it?). Are these discs still good. VSO Inspector doesn't give me anything back and Nero shows some data on the disc (I think that's what it is showing -- 64 bytes of raw data -- but all of the other tests are grayed out) And again, Win XP says "0" Used space, "0" Free space.

I have a "known good" CD (VCD) that plays on my DVD player. VSO Inspector scans OK, and says the disc is a VCD and has a label, but that is about all. Nero scans it OK and says it is closed, but not very much other than that. And again, Win XP says "0" Used, "0" Free -- and yet it is a good VCD?

These things are all over the place. I still haven't found what I ---want -- something that will tell me
-what kind of disc it is,
-what are the file names,
-how much of the disc is used out of what the total is,
-if the disk closed/finalized, whatever it is that says the disk is done, and can't be used any more
-if it isn't finished, but what's there so far.

Am I asking for or expecting too much here.

Still somewhat in the dark.

If you insert a perfectly good blank CD/DVD into your PC, you can't get any info on it because it isn't formatted yet. You can however, use Nero's Disc Info and get all that info you listed - blank or used.

Well, if I insert a blank CD disc into the recorder -- at least Properties on the disc will tell me "0" Used space, 736,960,512 Free space.

If I use a good burned CD, I get, for instance, "0" Used, 244,221,952 Free, and the dics icon is 100% purple, Free.

But your are right about the DVD, I get "0" Used, "0" Free space -- didn't remember that -- guess I hadn't checked a new DVD before.

With a good burned DVD, I still get "0" Used, "0" Free, but the little disc icon is about Good DVD, get 0,0 but disc circle shows the disc is parially used. Whoops, did it again and it shows "0" Used, "0" Free and the icon indicates 100% Used.

OK, so I give up on Windows XP giving me anything useful, and will concentrate mastering (relative word) the Nero statistics.
