I have a Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-812S that I think is going bad. It does not read SOME pre-recorded discs, but if I put in a blank Verbatim, it reads it just fine. By not read, I mean it just sits in the carriage and spins and is not recognized by ANYDVD, My Computer, or Windows Explorer.

I have checked for firmware and driver updates and performed all necessary upgrades.

Anyone have any suggestions before I buy a new one?

Before you do that, there is a possibility that the copy protection system is messing up the read function. Try dowloading the FREE copy of DVD 43 and let that run in conjunction with your DVD. It will clear up any problems with copy protection conflicts or country codes.

AnyDVD will do the same thing as DVD43 in respect to protection and region code. Something else is wrong. Did you try uninstalling the drive and letting Windows redetect it, this might work.

Arniebear, I wasn't sure that he was talking about the program AnyDVD since he used all caps in the name. You are absolutely correct though, IF he is using the "Program" AnyDVD, then DVD 43 is not going to change anything.

It's possible that he just needs to clean up the laser lense!

I agree a good lense clean can do wonders.

Thank you all for your help.

Sorry, I thought the program AnyDVD was all caps.

I tried the uninstall reinstall, no good.

I didn't think lens cleaner really worked, but if y'all say so, I'll try it

Can you tell us what disks it doesn't read and which ones it does since you said SOME? Could it be that those SOME disks need cleaning as well? Just a thought.

@gmascell

Well, do you have the latest firmware for your Lite-On SOHW-812S? If not then go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1792 and update it to the latest USOS.

What kind of media is your pre-recorded discs?

He said that he up-dated the firmware in the original message - we have to assume that he did so.

I have had a few DVD's that my computer DVD-RW drive would not read; for the most part they were rented disks. I often use my computer to play them because I can expand that "Super Skinny" Wide Screen to full screen with my Cyberlink's DVD Player program. I can then use the S-Video output from my Computer Video Card to put the movie on my living room TV set.

I REALLY hate Wide Screen DVD's, but it's darn difficult to rent anything else.

As stated, some rented DVD's give my computer drive fits, but I have never had a new one do that unless my laser lens was long overdue a cleaning.

I guess I must have forgot about this line; "I have checked for firmware and driver updates and performed all necessary upgrades." However, I just want to make sure that he has the correct firmware to go on further that's all. If he does, then there is a possibility that it's a media issue involved.

Anyways, in addendum to your "super skinny" widescreen version when watching on your TV, did you have the settings on both of your DVD player and TV set to widescreen [like 16:9 aspect ratio] by a chance? If you're watching a widescreen dvd and you didn't change any configurations/settings on your TV and DVD player, then it's more likely that the output video/picture is a very small screen instead of the actual widescreen mode.

I know this is not proper lens cleaning procedure, but I removed the burner, took the back off and blew it out with my air compressor in the garage. I figured I'd be getting a new drive anyways.

Guess what? it works now. What I noticed was a TON of dust inside my PC case. I hit everything with the compressed air.

So far so good

Thanks again

I too have an air compressor and use it to clean my computers regularly. It's a snap to clean the heat sink with compressed air and man does it make a difference!!

Nothing wrong with using compressed air to clean up the DVD burner, just do NOT hit the lens itself with high pressure. It's suspended on a VERY delicate cradling system and, although it's rugged, it can be thrown into misalignment if you exceed the movement limits by hitting it too hard for too long.

Other than that caution, you more than likely will be all right using compressed air with the DVD Drive Covers Off so the dust can escape. Doing it with the DVD case covers installed is a total waste of time and energy because you just move the dust around and it comes right back to settle down on the lens again. [been there, done that]!
