what does booktyping mean. When I use dvd shrink the booktype dvd rom {or soething like that}button is always checked but I have no idea what that means. thanks in advance to all that reply

Booktyping sets the type of a DVD+R disc to DVD-Rom which makes it more readable by most dvd players. I always booktype to DVD-rom if possible, that way I am more certain that my backups will play on other dvd players. There is a lenghty thread or two about booktyping in the newbie forum. I would recommend reading it.

This booktyping can only be performed with the plus format and not all burners support this booktyping feature. Some models have their own utility,others must have a special hacked firmware,and some no bitsetting at all.Some software like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter can booktype,only if that drive has the booktyping feature.

What's it mean?

If someone wants their backups to play in several stand alone players/game consoles/and pc dvd drives,then the booktyping helps on the compatability of all those drives to recognize your backups.If those backups are going to be played on many drives,then the need for booktyping will be critical.
Some of those drives can be picky as to which format/which brand of media/even the differences between several DVD-RW drives.Take a look at all the threads here at AD about stand alones not being able to recognize peeps backups.
This booktyping usually helps to fool those players into playing backup discs.This can give you a third option as to finding the format that your standalone/s will play.More flexibility!

It works for me with both my benqs. I wouldn't settle for a burner without this bitsetting capability to booktype!
