My LG 4040b burner burns just about all formats & it came with a re-writeable Ram disc as well. Can I format the disc by using windows or do I need software that supports Ram ?
P.S Would it render my disc unuseable if I did?

Yes WinXP, Nero, whatever software came with your burner will probably all work. There are also utility progs (try Google) that will as well. Some swear by one or the other. It's rewriteable so I'm not sure what you mean by rendering it unusable.

For whatever reason, InCD (part of the Nero Suite) seems to do the best job of managing DVD-RAM disks as self-reported by some users. I believe two formats are supported: udf and fat32. UDF is recommended by the people that use them which is admittedly very few. Just a word of caution. Don't put anything on the disk that isn't backed up elsewhere.

There should have been a DVD-Ram driver that came with your burner. It needs to be installed. There should have also been a utility program, maybe called DVDForm that is used for actually formatting the DVD-Ram disk by either choosing from the Start menu or by right clicking on the device icon. You should be able to choose among 3 formats: FAT32, UDF 1.5, and UDF 2.0. It's possible that LG used Nero's InCD as the DVD-Ram driver. The software should be on the CD that came with the burner. I'm trying to do this from memory. Didn't your burner come with a guide or manual?

Windows itself does not contain any native built-in software for writing DVDs of any type. Yet all disks work with WinXP if the driver is installed.

We really don't appreciate being yelled at (the all caps post) from someone who only bothers to check back when he/she feels like it and then is demanding when he/she does. The advice is free. Treat people who donate their time with respect.

Sorry,it was intended to finally emphasise the question (not yell)but I posted it over two weeks ago without any specific answer. My Cd burners have all come with Nero but lg decided to include an old version of something Gold (cant remember off hand)that always ended in"report this error to microsoft" messages.Good burner but crap software.

No offense taken.

If you installed software off the CD then the driver, etc. is probably installed. Have you tried inserting the DVD-Ram and then right clicking on the device icon in My Computer? Does a formatting dialog appear? Is DVDForm listed as a program in the Start Menu? I don't know when you purchased your burner so it's hard to know exactly what software LG included with the burner. They tend to change over time.

Sorry to keep dragging this out but in explorer r click displays a format option but its for fat 32,which answers my question earlier on about rendering the disc unusable.I have used the disc b4 with nero6 ,but it was'nt exactly mine & updates have stopped it working. I've been using Deepburner which is free if not a little awkward to use,but doesnt support ram.Anyone know of a similar prog that does support Ram?
